The Ride of the Samurai from Wargames Factory
June 16, 2012 by brennon
Those Mounted Samurai that we showed you the box art for last week are now available from Wargames Factory. Check out the models and the sprues below...
Well it's safe to say that the Samurai themselves look better than the box art for the regiment. Some nice interesting mixes of spears, swords and archers to create some great looking units on the battlefield of the Far East.
Will you be grabbing these Samurai for either a Fantasy or Historical army? If you fancy doing some conversion then you could even go as far as Steampunk Samurai from Dystopian Wars!
What do you think? Let us know below.
Thanks for the sprue review Brennon. I can see that this is going to be far from a simple build but the basics of some decent Samurai cavalry is all there. Pity they did not add a group of heads to the sprues as there are some excellent prints from the period of horse warriors with arrows sticking out of them and heads tied to their saddles of the opponents they have defeated. I will risk my arm on these and see how much they push me into wanting to spend hours on each figure.
I’m not a fan of wargames factory models they look a bit rigid in theier poses. This could be down to the way they have been assembled.
They do cover periods in history that are of interest to me and i would be a fool to ignore them so I will probably dip my toe in the water and try a box of these.
Glad to see the horses are nothing like the box art
@huscarle:
The other samurai kits have looked really rigid in the official pictures but you can make some really interesting, dynamic poses out of them as long as you take a bit of care.
@immortalreaper Thanks that’s just what I hoping to hear.
@huscarle, if you head over here, you can see some of mine:

Yes I can see they are poseable and if I mix them in with some perrys I can have quite a sizeable army of unique figures.
Looks like the Takeda will ride again
@Huscarle: for a really nice looking takeda, head here:

It’s a new company, the minis aren’t out yet, but they look very very promising!
See what you mean they look great, especially the Samurai in red and I like the monks as well. I will keeping a look out for them.
Two great links there Reaper. Thanks for showing them. The figures from Wargames Factory always seem to have extended necks but Reaper shows with a bit of careful fitting the figures can turn out to look great. The horses in this box look to be a challenge since the heads are seperate to the bodies. Careful dry fitting is once more the answer plus a small amount of filler from what I can see. There are many prints from the warring states about online so some careful research will aid a great looking cavalry group. Once more the human figures… Read more »
Those are rather good. Now if we would get samurais on foot armed with no-dachis.
The thing I really do like the the sense of movement from the horses. Unlike many lines that have them sort of walking or doing a light gallop, they look like in full charge!
@Cadfael:
Kensei should be opening preorders in the near future. And the models will be 28-30mm scale and all metal (it is stated on the FB page, but it’s a little hard to track down)
They’re also producing their own rules as far as I know and they are currently being translated to English.
Thanks for the info Reaper. That scale fits just nicely for what I want I think. Will be watching out for them to release some figures.
