Mortars, Tanks, Rifles And More For Vietnam & Tour Of Duty
March 18, 2013 by brennon
Flames of War variant Tour of Duty is seeing a whole bunch of new miniatures coming to the jungles of Vietnam. Check out the US Tanks, Mortars, Helicopters and more coming on the 23rd of March...
First up we have the UH-1D Slick and M48A3 Patton offering both a way in and out of the hot zone and some heavy fire support once you get there. Those Patton Tanks really are something special and look pretty mighty!
But all that vehicular power won't do much good in the depths of the jungle. At that point you're going to need some infantry and here they are. Above are the Rifle Platoon, Mortar Platoon and 4.2" Mortar Platoon allowing you to stalk ahead under some covering fire.
And just like with the Vietnamese you can also get yourself a Tropic Lightning token and dice set to personalise the experience on the tabletop. Those dice really are quite smart.
It would be interesting to play as the Vietnamese in the conflicts of Vietnam, but I think that far to many of the US troops and vehicles are just too cool to pass up!
Now you've seen kits from both sides, what would you pick?
CHARLIE DONT GAME!
A video and music for Vietnam?
Try ’19’ by Paul Hardcastle (1985.)
‘In WWII the average age of the combat soldier was 26, In Vietnam it was 19…’
A war game set in Vietnam War fair enough.
War games remove all the danger and confusion from real war and leave a fun game of strategy and tactics.
But please do NOT try to make the actual Vietnam war look ‘cool.’ to try to sell the game .
Far too many people suffered because of it.
Far more people suffered in WW2 yet I don’t see you complaining about that. Average combatant age is not that significant, suffering is suffering whether or not you are 19 or 26. Where exactly do you plan on drawing the line here? You should either stand for all war-games, or none of them.
Not directed at you personally @lanrak but more of a statement in general and opinion… But this is a slippery slope… Taking offence (and it’s your choice to take it) to ‘games’ and then proceeding to vent it publicly is a bit like pooing where you sleep. Nobody is expected to like every trope or genre they see, but you have to look at it for what it is, entertainment. Have you written a strongly worded letter to the producers of War movies to complain about their entertainment? What if we start complaining about ‘satanic’ references in any game that… Read more »
….is that not the case for every war?
On a personal note I’m looking forward to trying this game out, especially for the following:
Cool late 60’s Soundtracks
Hot Landing Zones
Choppers! Lots of Choppers!
Same here, gunships with miniguns, rockets and painting those snarling faces on them is what’s drawing me to this! I’d have to get both rule books though, as you need the FoW book to use the Vietnam expansion. Then again, I can always just buy the minis regardless lol. I defy anyone who sees a game of this being played with the gunships across the table, not to start humming The Ride of the Valkyries. Or even playing the track while playing the game (well, maybe not in the Vietnamese players turn). 😀 Just had a thought: in WWII FoW,… Read more »
Yep. I know where lanrak is coming from, I thought something similar watching the vid myself. Especially the first scene.
But you’ve got it right there. I need more Hueys!!!!!
Alright! I’m happy they’re turning their attention to the Vietnam setting! I always thought it’d be a very interesting game setting.
For someone of my age a lot songs of the late sixties and early seventies are indicative of Vietnam and for me are more thought provoking than a song written 10 years after the event.
Music for a teenager of that period not only was the best music ever written 🙂 but it went hand in hand with everything that happened at the time, good or bad it cannot in my mind be seperated.
Too lighten up I think I’d prefer to play a Vietnam game at skirmish level. Not that I’ve tried it yet but I’d imagine Bolt action may be able to be tweeked.
I’m not surprised nearly everyone has mentioned choppers. The sound and sight of a Huey is unmistakable just like a Rolls Royce Merlin.
Can I just say how much I hate the FOW dice? Nearly every other type of die has one symbol to replace the one not the six. Nothing so heart-rending when they are used for other systems as realising your opponent has rolled sixes when you thought it was ones. Nearly as bad a people who use dice that you can’t read from the other side of the table,
HI folks. Just to clarify. I have no problem with a war game set in any historical period. I think the Vietnam setting is fine for a war game as it has a unique and very ‘different feel.’ (I have played a lot of games of using ‘Bodycount’ ‘Nam skirmish rules.) MY objection was the use of ‘cool ‘ 1960s anti war songs, with ‘cool’ shots of helicopter gun ships blazing away at the jungle and napalm being dropped to promote the game.. BUT NO footage of the resulting death and destruction caused by this. The only reason I quoted… Read more »
No offence taken mate!
Should be noted the vid on this post was thrown in by me for the soundtrack 🙂
No idea who made the video, just was looking for Vietnam sounds… which I just can’t help myself on these Vietnam related posts.
German tanks were very cool though 😉
