Warren and Dave get back together for a round up of everything that happened last weekend at the Flames of War Grand Tournament at Tabletop Nation. They also get to answering some of the questions you guys have been asking!
I cannot stress enough how much I enjoy the easy going, ‘one on one’ feel of these videos. As has been said before, it really is like sitting down with mates and hearing about what happened with them over the weekend or tourney, etc. It never feels like you (be it Dave, Warren, Justin, etc) are talking at us but rather with us.
Have you had any problems with the Pages falling out on the mini rule book. I just bought mine read to about page 40 then page 41 through 80 just started falling out. I am not abusive to books I want them last but i am wondering if having pages that heavy in that small a binding in paperback might be an issue.
No kidding, mine started falling out the third day I had it and I had many pages out by the end of the first week. Everyone one I know that has the small rule book went and had it spiral bound at the local print shop for a few dollars. I went the hard way and bought a three ring notebook the same size as the rule book and used a three hole punch on each and every page. (I have more time than money.) I like the hardcover of the three ring binder and so it works well for… Read more »
i have the same problem and without even play….only by reading the book…..too bad 🙁
Same here:(
Just as an update I sent them a support request (mostly to tell them they have a problem) and they are sending me a new book free of charge.
Just to say the whole series of the videos for the FOW tournament have been brilliant!
I have to be honest and say that my main interest is in historical wargames and it’s been the coverage of FOW and Bolt Action that persuaded me to become a backstager.
So Dave and Warren keep up the good work.
Sounds like some really good tips in there guys. Now that Warren has progressed to Fearless Trained, how about another battle report showing off your new moves using one of the tourney scenarios seeing as you didnt face each other over the weekend? 😉
As has been said above, I love these videos. It feels like chatting to mates, not just because of the relaxed manner of your presentation, but you’re talking about the same problems I have had as a rookie, and how you’ve learnt from them. I’ve played a few tournies (none Flames, yet), always as a huge newbie, hoping to not come last but little else. I’ve managed to learn a huge amount in all of them, largely thanks to the generosity of my opponents. This for me has been the value of tournements, many games in a short period of… Read more »
Sorry, just read the above post about the pages falling out and spiral binding. I hadn’t read that properly before posting my thread. Thumbs up to that, as many friends of my have done that and it really works.
You had me at “and I own a couple of pubs” 😉
PM me mate and we’ll get a chat 🙂
Just listening to Warrens experience of Tournaments and can relate.
I’ve only been to two Tournaments and my feeling was that they are very intimidating for the first timer as well as a little non-inclusive; there was a genuine feeling of some of the players barely tolerating the newbie. My thought on a way to avoid this would be to try and persuade tournament organisers to make the games spectator friendly, that way people can come to watch and build up the courage / Skills to eventually attend. Maybe with your influence you could help make this happen?
I love the nature of the BoW videos. The Flames of War series has been a real highpoint for me.
And @warzan you are such a beer floozy, careful @stusidle he’ll ditch you as soon as a gamer with a distillery comes along 😉
Yeah I have a soft spot for a nice beer and an open fire 🙂 (It’s coming into my time of the year now lol)
I make one heck of a slow gin 😀
Also when I was doing my A level science we did brewing (purely for the science you understand 😉 ) I found I had a talent for that 😀
This series continues to have all the awesome. I’ll definintely look into the Bolt Action tournament scene once I’ve more free time. No painting in the car me, though. It’s not safe when driving.
Nice video, I really appreciate the fact that you are covering (and playing) FoW, as it is my favorite game. When watching those videos, it reminds me of my own first steps into the game few years ago. I also had a problem with the tournaments at first, as I also had a bad experience from 40K. But I must say that on FoW events, the atmosphere usually is much more relaxed. Also I do agree (well at least from my experience), that the meta and the lists are not ‘that’ important in FoW, even though you still need to… Read more »
We are coming near the end of this first season of FOWFTW, and as there is definately going to be more seasons, we’re just chatting about where to go next.
I’m really liking the ‘Know your opponent’ tip, and perhaps season two could be more focused on that, where we start to explore the different kinds of unit you can face and try to understand what they do.
Would that be of interest do you think?
I love these videos. To be honest these videos are what made me decide to get this for the game not just the models. I would love to see you guys take your armies and go over the advanced rules. i.e. Artillery, Air, and objective placement.
Yeah that might be helpfull for both you and new players wo watch this show.
It would be hard to cover everything, but you can go with broader categories.
For Example you can take artillery and then discuss different kinds of arty, what are they effective aginst, how to deal with it when you are fighting against it, how is it affected by natinonal rules etc.
Love the FOWFTW videos! It has been a treat watching Warren’s joy of the game increasing over time. It’s too bad that you guys never faced each other at the tournament, that would have been so awesome. Were you relived or disappointed that you never faced each other.
I agree with jabbaa that you should play each other for your next video using your tournament armies.
Warren/Dave I think that it would be great to play against both of you – too bad I live on the other side of the world.
FOWFTW has been one of the best series on BOW yet. I am very glad to hear that Warren found that the FOW tournament players are a very understanding and sporting bunch – I too have witnessed the hysteria that surrounds some games, but then those tend to be written with revisionistic (ie marketing led) cheesy rule sets so what can you expect? One advantage of historical games is that the history is either very well known or easily available to EVERYONE – so there is some realistic relationship between the cost, mobility, firepower and survivability of the mini or… Read more »
Jagdpanthers…
very nice decision! i only own two, but they are well worth it…and, they are so aesthetic!
Armoured Compulsory Armoured Squadron HQ – 1x CinC Sherman V, 1x 2iC Sherman V (170 pts) – AA MG – 1x Equip with .50cal AA MG for CinC Sherman (5 pts) – AA MG – 1x Equip with .50cal AA MG for 2iC Sherman (5 pts) – Dozer Blade – Equip 2iC with Dozer Blade (5 pts) – Hero – 1x Warrior Joe Vandeleur with RAF Forward Air Controller (60 pts) Compulsory Armoured Platoon – 1x Command Sherman V, 2x Sherman V, 1x Firefly VC (385 pts) – AA MG – 1x Equip Sherman with .50cal AA MG (5 pts)… Read more »
Great video. I really enjoy this series. I have my own problems with the tournament scene (angry shouting people and stuff), but if it is anything like you said, I have at least to try to be there some time in the future. Congratulations on your wins. Did Dave manage to take the best sportsman trophy?
For another season I would suggest mid-war. It works quite the same (from a rule perspective), but games turn out quite differently. Tanks are really expensive, but they are that more powerful. “Mid-War, where a tank is still a tank!”
Great video guys, a good round up to follow on from the AAR’s, did like the bit about the recommendations of what you should take to the tournament. Its handy tips like that, that you gain from experience and seeing what good ideas other players have from being around a tournament I guess. “Know your Opponent” is a good idea to add to season 2, knowledge is a good thing to have ;). Or maybe not, when you see the “Big Cats” are across the table or waiting to come on as a reserve “oh bugger!” Maybe show and cover… Read more »
Glad you enjoyed this new found experience and it was very interesting to hear all this feedback.
I strongly suspected your misgivings about a tournament were as a result of an earlier GW encounter and I was equally sure you were going to get a whole different experience from attending a tournament of a different game system.
For a lot of other games, a tournament is the only way for some of us to meet other players of the same game. It is more of a “pleasant day out” than a “must win at all costs” kind of day.
Thanks for the answers, gents. Judging from the way things have progressed so far, season 2 looks very promising.
Warren what might be a good option to do is give 1x Stug in each of your Stug platoons the StuH42 10.5cm gun, as it gives it Breakthrough gun and smoke.
Infantry automatically fail saves (p100), so if you do hit they stay hit;), the gun still has AT10 (FP2+) which is still good against allied tanks.
Did you find the rest of your Stug’s btw?
BoW you are partially to blame for me now delving into Flames of War.
Picking up a Artillery “heavy” British force tomorrow from my “L”GS and slowly building them and painting them until I’m finally consumed with WWII action.
It plays and feel like Company of Heroes the board game and for me, that’s me sold.
So now I’m going back and really watching the how to play style games and getting ready.
Plus trying to work out colours, brown is all well and good but surely WWII had more than that 😀 The research continues
Great round up of your GT experiences. I am sad to hear you are dropping your tiffies Dave. Would you never consider getting superior air support to start with 7 dice? I am a new Brit player too and appreciate your insights. My chosen army followed yours really closely by coincidence. Don’t have JOE and never had sextons just static 25pdrs. And I already bought my Cromwell/Challenger platoon for recon. Still building them 🙂 I think a last hurrah for FOWFTW season 1 should be a rematch of Dave and Warren using their modified tournament armies armed with all their… Read more »
