Time for Warren and our resident time lord David to break out their tanks and get a game of Flames of War on. To kick off the guys are keeping it simple and just playing with some tanks and anti-tank guns, and Warren is getting even more excited about his little Stug III Tank Destroyers...
I’ll have to check this out next time I’m down south. Hey Warren, maybe you can teach me one for a change!
I’ve never enjoyed a gaming series this much EVER!! Can’t wait to try this game for myself. Donations welcome *cap in hand*
Bloody hell… It seems like only yesterday when we barely had four guys full time and not enough cameras at BoW. Now we have a host of hosts, including a fricking time lord ! 🙂
That’s good stuff.
I’m playing my first game Monday night planning on starting off with just the tanks and pak40’s as well. That extra point of armour fot the Stugs seemed to make quite a bit of difference.
Maybe have to field the other squad of Shermans as well to even things up a bit.
Guys sorry, but iam quite sure you have some little mistakes in your game. The first one is that tanks reduce their speed in difficult terrain to 8 inches. Then another is that you have to take a motivation check to get into bailed tanks. Btw thats a 4+ for the confident veteran germans 😉 And there was a last one by shooting at the last sherman tank: The turret was facing in another direction, so you have to check if the shell hits the hull or the turret. (1to3 hull and 4to6 the turret i think) But for the… Read more »
This was a great intro game demo.Just the BASICS of moving shooting and morale.
I like Warrens enthusiasm, if he is this fired up with just this small fraction of the game play of FoW. What is he going to be like at the end!
Great video guys! I have always wondered how the mechanics of flames played out. I know its still early stages- but I’d really like to see a little bit of how army list building works in one of your future vids 🙂
Warren, mate, I couldn’t agree more: Stugs are absolutely amazingly looking tanks.
Here’s a tip of mine, get a nicely scaled model and stick ‘m in your guard allies! It’s a fantastic replacement for an IG medusa!
What advantages did David’s Shermans have over the other tank (I can’t remember the name)? Are they faster than the other?
Also being David didn’t take out anything (dice roles where sad 🙁 on his part) would it been more even if he fielded more tanks to even out the odds?
As for a starting point on how rules go, it covered almost everything I need to know. Thanks guys, that was fun and sad (for David) to watch.
Yes it was a basic game with not turret rules etc,
Also thanks BoW for giving me an avatar that’s so creepy the child catcher called me and told me I was scary.
I hope my voice and I Quote “like banshees dragging nails down a blackboard” doesn’t put many people off.
Ah youtube, you are the best place to find quotes!!
Your voice is beautiful, and I mean it.
Don’t listen to people who think they’re smart by putting a comment on Youtube… You don’t know how many times I’ve seen “creepy whispers”, “psycho killer” or “moobs” under my videos (sometimes in the same comment).
I simply don’t look anymore. Sorry, it’s a shame for those who ask me questions on Youtube, but I can’t sacrifice my self esteem or my sanity for that sort of thing.
I can split comments on the vids I’m in into three distinct categories: You look like a girl, You look like a hobbit, how did that girl get that deep voice
And honestly, you really don’t look like a hobbit. A gnome, at best 😉
rather enjoy it myself sounds almost scholarly… enjoying the vids you and warren seem to play off each other quite well can’t wait to see you get more in depth with the game as it looks fun! Personally Ive looked at trying to recreate the Somme or one of the major offensives early in the second world war so i relish the chance to see the infantry come in.
Dave; you have the poise of an aristocrat, the manners of a gentleman and the speech of a scholar who appreciates his subject with delicacy.
Hold your head up high in noble hope, that commentators such as the mentioned one one day also discover they are gifted in some way and become a happier person.
Well, in me you found a fan. You seem to be a pretty awesome guy !
But then again, I always had a weak spot for mad scientists in my heart !
: )
@manpug. Davids Sherman VC(Firefly) tanks had a bigger gun.(17 pdr, AT value 14, the standard 75mm gun was only AT 10) @visforvengeance . Army selection is really easy in F.o.W. Pick a ‘Briefing’ (army list.)(There are several FREE to download ones on Battlefronts excellent website.) You MUST take a Company HQ, and 2 Combat Platoons. After that just pick any units you want to from Combat , Weapons, Brigade or Divisional support choices, up to an agreed PV. I use EasyArmy.com as it is a FREE army builder for FoW. (It is approved by Battlefront and is an excellent way… Read more »
really enjoyed the show, warren dont get too hung up on a list being historical in flames they kind of have to be within reason as that is how you get army lists. I enjoyed this one much more than last week, though I would say try not to teach incorrect rules the one that particularly rankled from today was saying that bailed tanks that are bailed again are auto destroyed, that is not the case they have to pass a motivation check and if they pass they are still just bailed. and from observing my local gaming club last… Read more »
Great video guys. Welcome back Dave.
Really enjoying the series.
I know some are bothered by incorrect rules and can see their point of view, but I like the fact that it is a true representation of how we learn the game.
I have played 3 games in total since getting Open Fire box set and I still make mistakes with rules but am getting better.
I love the tanks but am surprised by how much I am enjoying my infantry.
Can’t wait for the next one. Please don’t make me wait too long 🙂
it is a true representation of how most people learn games, they learn from blaggers who dont know the rules themselves and they learn it wrong.
saying that im really looking forward to the next one in 2 weeks as hoping this will continue to grow the flames community as Stu said on the weekender
Great video guys, this I really getting me into FOW. As for the mistakes, who cares? No one knows all the rules to start. You play some games and if you enjoy it you re read the rules and you learn and you grow into the game. Having fun I the most important part of gaming.
Keep it up guys. Dave. For The Win!
Hi guys could sombody clarify the rule on bogging checks for me (could be the wrong place to ask, sorry if it is) in the vid warren takes a bogging check to enter the wood, which i understand as its what was explained to me when i started. But Warren also takes one when leaving the wood, which i wasnt told. well i was, but only if he began his turn in the wood. The way i was shown was that if you have enough movement to move completely through the wood you only take the bogging test as you… Read more »
i dont claim to be an expert (I most definitely am not) but i do have the rulebook infront of me, page 43 covers bogging, you check if you enter terrain rated difficult or very difficult going (for your vehicle type). you also check if you start the turn in that terrain and then move (even to rotate the tank) You dont test again to leave a terrain piece, you do however have to test for each obstacle/terrain piece you enter in a turn. e.g. if you leave one wood and go into a second in the same turn that… Read more »
cheers, thats what i thought (i did check the rulebook myself but wondered if there was another bit somewhere else i missed).
sorry i didnt want to bother you guys, but i thought that the points i mensioned were basic points. moving in terrain and so on.
And sorry again but its still a motivation check to get back in bail out tanks. In our community it was difficult too and my only intention was to help the guys to get in
fow. I think my mistake was to have another understanding of the game basics.
Iam sorry if i catch some one on the wrong foot.
Enjoy the game and dont worry about my tattle 😉
Im not too certain i like the system yet, but this vid was very informative and fun to watch 🙂 looking fwd to the next one!
Good video guys and welcome back Dave. I’ve been playing FOW on and off since the star of the 2nd edition, it’s a great game with historical feel without all the complitcations. I think your intro video is great at teaching new people into the game at the same time as refreshing peoples memory who have not played in a while.
I look forward to your next video
Also tanks can go within 2″ of each other. the 2″ distance rule applies to infantry and gun teams, (p38 moving a team) (though you would still need room to rotate the turret to shoot a nearby tank as per the example in the vid)
Quite right!
“He has a sherman tank and he basically goes on a crazy road trip…” wasn’t that one of the American Pie movies? Beavis and Butt-Head Do America?
Sorry, I’ll get my coat… 😉
