Join The Theban Sacred Band For Warlord’s Hail Caesar
February 28, 2018 by brennon
Warlord Games aren't just dealing with the Dark Ages at the moment as they also have some support for armies of the Ancient period too. One of their new pre-orders last weekend was for the Theban Sacred Band to help build up your Greek armies in Hail Caesar.
These elite warriors were considered to be near invincible by both their allies and their enemies. Picked from men aged between twenty and thirty, these 300 warriors were picked for their merit and skill rather than simply on their standing and birthright.
The traditional matching would be both a younger and older man who trained together and although they would have traditionally been split up amongst a larger force to lead other units they were eventually brought back under one banner to serve as an elite shock troop on the battlefield.
You would find them in the thick of the fighting, looking to break the back of the enemy force and take out key leaders and officers to cause disarray and routing amongst the enemy.
They fought for many years in a variety of conflicts but eventually were slaughtered to a man at the Battle of Chaeronea. Although the rest of their army had fled the Sacred Band refused to surrender and lay down their arms. So, surrounded on the field of battle they were killed alongside their last commander, Theagenes.
Maybe it's worth recreating that final epic fight on the tabletop and seeing if the Sacred Band can fight their way to freedom on the tabletop?
What do you think of the models?

Those are really good.
I can see one member of the Theban Warband that wouldn’t get the “Justin seal of approval” ……. GET THE CLIPPERS
oops make that 2 members with members ….. the clippers will sing songs of chasity on this war band ….. nothing will be sacred
I think it is just one of them entering dangerous clipping territory @beardragon14 . It looks like 2 angles of the same mini ?
I thought so too initally but examing the tufts (of grass) it is two 🙂
But then again … you are right there are only 4 designs and they are repeated….. but this does mean that 25% of your army is unsuited for phalliphobics like Justin
Oh yeah, good catch sir 🙂 . Looks like @dignity and his clippers will be busy if any mini’s end up at BoW Towers.
Eeeeh… no need to play coy. We all know what’s, erm, at the bottom of things… It’s all nature.
At least I hope so. I mean that we know. But also, what is there. And that it’s natural.
Heavens, this is about ancient Greece – it’s part of the deal.
And Barbie anatomy is not cool. Who would want that anyway???
** said in mock and I emphasise MOCK “righteous” indignation** Oh come on don’t give me any of that historical bunk, this is all about taking proud warriors and reducing them to sex symbols so you pathetic fanboys can objectify them rather than see them as valid in their own right. The inclusion of that penis has ruined the entire range and is symptomaic of what is wrong with this hobby . I am never buying Warlord again. !!!!!!! I will organise a boycott !!!!!!! I will storm there halls in Nottingham !!!! BURN THEM !!!!!!! ……. *typing stuff has… Read more »
…now that you emphasise that MOCK so much, does that count as mock mock, so with a little truth in there? 😉
I like that you’re getting at several behaviour clichees there. A certain something of recent events comes to my mind but I dare not voice any jest in that direction lest people mistake my humour…
I’m grateful for all that fun.
OT
@beardragon14 did you notice my pointing out something for you beneath the Fabled Realms Weekend Eightfold Path video? Or did you ignore that on purpose? 😉
@darnast I apologise I have been busy the last two days, you certainly haven’t been ignored Sir … i shall proceed to said thread (it rhymes 😀 ) post hast
Nice mini’s 🙂 . The articles title has them scared rather than sacred though @brennon .
Oops on the title. Dashed nice minis though
Well they scared the Spartans when beat the crap out of them
He, he… from the tumbnail I thought they were women…
In all honesty I’m a bit sad now, actually. ;P
nice troops.
Some of the finest Ancient Greek warriors and not ones honoured with their own bespoke design in 28mm before to the best of my knowledge. Well done Warlord, another for the list once the Celts are done.
Ah, Theban man lovers. Lovely figures, except for that one guy showing a bit too much of his package. Greta paint job, almost too realistic 🙂
These do look like just four figures from different angles..
