Greek Heavy Cavalry To Ride Forth From Victrix
September 29, 2016 by brennon
Leading the charge on the Ancient battlefield Victrix have shown off some more of their cavalry coming to the tabletop soon. Here we have their Later Hellenistic Greek/Successor Cavalry.
The first image shows one of their riders with a shield in one hand and a standard in the other. What marks them out as being from the later period is the style of the helmet and the fact they are using the aforementioned shields.
Another of their riders is galloping into battle with javelins in hand.
It's interesting that heavy cavalry, during this period of time, still used ranged weapons like this. I guess it's because if you were looking at it from a medieval point of view, or even a different Ancient angle, they'd have barded warhorses and be clad in much more armour.
These models however still subscribe to much more of a skirmishing role, acting as a quick alternative to the solid blocks of infantry fighting on either side.
What do you think of the models so far?

Victrix are really going from strength to strength!
I think they look fantastic 😎
Those are very nice.
more and more tempted to start a Macedonian army, some fantastic releases we’re seeing!! I wonder what they’ve got planned for their Napoleonic Austrians…
Ben I think they used mainly ranged weapons as stirrups hadn’t arrived in Europe at this time and trying to get purchase to apply a melee weapon while hanging on with your knees was problematic
In the end, the Greeks didn’t use heavy shock cavalry primarily for culutral reasons.
It was very viable even then, as seen in practice when used by, among others, the Persians and Macedonians.
There was some Greek heavy cavalry that used lance’s but most cavalry of the Greeks wasn’t highly regarded compared to the Hoplites
they look good.
Brilliant as usual.
I hope they sell at least half as well as they look!
These Victrix releases just get better and better.
I’ve been waiting for plastic Greek/Hellenistic cavalry for ages (and of course the conversion potential 🙂 !!! )
