Victrix Charge Forth With New Gallic & Roman Cavalry Options
September 14, 2017 by brennon
The design team at Victrix have been tinkering away at some of the posing options for their Gallic Cavalry for you to use in your games of Ancient Warfare.
The team are wondering if you have any ideas as to what they could do with the posing of these charging warriors. This pose is the one they've been working on where the warrior has a couched lance, ready to thud it into the body of some unfortunate Roman soldier.
Talking of Roman soldiers we also have these Early Roman Cavalry options for you to check out too.
This set is also looking superb, and one of the things that Victrix tend to do very well is creating cavalry options that look like they are actually riding off into battle rather than just trotting along. There is a lot of motion and power in their models which I think is great.
You should look for this second set to come out in early 2018 to help bolster your Roman army.
If you're interested in painting Romans, especially the ones from Victrix, then you can check out some work by community member janus1004...
So, if this kind of Romans caught your eye make sure to get stuck in down in the comments and share your thoughts on building Ancient Roman armies and maybe even their enemies in the mighty Gauls.

I got to get a set and see how they fit in with the Warlord heads…
and plastic cavalry 🙂
this means a Parthian army is possible in the future!
it depends on what you mean my Parthian army there Grim. At the moment we’ve only seen regular roman auxilia and celts, no Parthian light or cataphractii cavalry
I still have hope of plastic Sassanids one day.
Apparently they’re going to do Sarmatian cataphracts in plastic for the Dacian War, which would be a sign of good things to come.
Its just topples, chips, tumbles, breakages, snapped-dismounts and bent lances make me dread the old metal cavalry.
And I would like my Romans to fight a dangerous one-on-one scale battle against an equal strength opponent.
Sarmatians would be awesome!

wow they look really nice, but why have they to be on bases, It’s such a pain in the A. to remove them. also they look more like 32mm are you sure they are 28mm?
@tosjeck says on the pack 28mm.
They are definitely taller than other ranges out there but I like the size of these. They sit really well along side my dark age stuff. Not the same time period obviously but I’m looking for minis in around the size of my saga stuff as I want to play a more skirmish base game with Romans while I work up to larger numbers of troops (ah time, how I hate you lol).
As for the bases, I’ll probably use a Dremel or sander to reduce them. But I’ve seen thicker in the past.
Regarding the bases, on a few occasions I have removed them and the approach I took was to cut them off with a new (and sharp!) Xacto blade. As the base is so flat it is easy to get a clean cut and after you have put it on a new base it is not visible at all.
Check out Tacitus’ Agricola when the Roman army/fleet launch a coastal invasion of Scotland. That would Saga well…. Different Roman campaign groups attacking different settlement areas in Caledonia. There is even a mutiny by German auxiliaries who go rogue, seize some warships and sail home killing / looting anyone who opposes them 🙂 Agricola passage 28. The same summer a Usipian cohort, which had been levied in Germany and transported into Britain, ventured on a great and memorable exploit. Having killed a centurion and some soldiers, who, to impart military discipline, had been incorporated with their ranks and were employed… Read more »
it’s not ideal, as I’m using Aventine because the Victrix set hadn’t been released at that stage but if you look here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSyxhUD8It0 at 3:10 ish I compare Aventine to a Foundry and I think a Warlord mini. Aventine and Victrix match perfectly, so I definitely wouldn’t mix minis within a unit, but individual units will be okay, a little tall but maybe they’re all celtic stock 😉
They put bases on them as 99% of gamers I would say want bases on their figures
Here I am, painting Romans and thinking that I would see if anything new is happening on BoW and behold; there are Romans there as well! 🙂 Thanks for showing mine in the post, I think the Victrix models are fantastic and I will definitely get some of those Gaul cavalry ones.
nice review, does this mean that saga is out the window and I should start back into my own romans in hope of a game? 😉
By the way the disk things are phalerae they were proto medals for bravery, I’m sure it was in the book I lent to you (forced you to take)
@avernos – Nope, Saga’s definitely still inside the window 🙂
I’ll probably build a war-band size force first and I guess use saga rules to get playing and then expand on that up to a bigger ranked army to face your guys.
That way I can get playing sooner. I think playing with them will keep motivation up along the way to the big force.
So I’ll base on 1 pence coins again and get some trays for them.
I’m sure I can think of a few other skirmish games that we can use them in
could always proxy the Byzantine rules (not great – the synergies with that list seem to focus on the archers supporting the infantry and cav) or some coverage of the new Saga supplement be cool. Why not try Dux Britannorum from Two Fat Lardies? Great to see them get involved..
So @avernos – does that mean they’re just for show? Or do they act as armour?
well they were made of bronze and silver, so they would act as armour simply because they’re metal. But that’s not what they’re intended to be.
@lloyd glad you’ve finally seen the light.
Shame all my pictures have fallen victim to Photobucket’s greed and one can’t post pics right here otherwise I would show off my growing legion of Victrix EIRs.
In a few weeks they will be joined by Auxiliaries 😎
it be class to see them. i was looking for your pics when i sat down with these, as i was going to use what u had for referance.
u can still post pics in the forums. do u have any left in there?
@lloyd
Send you an email with pics mate, I will start another Roman thread soon-ish!
el cid was the first thing that came to me with the first picture.
was it the ‘tache that did it? 🙂
