Steamforged Games Releasing Guild Ball Two Player Starter Box
October 6, 2016 by brennon
Steamforged Games will be releasing a Two Player Starter Box for Guild Ball called Kick Off on the 25th of November 2016!
The Brewer's Guild will be facing off against The Masons as two plastic teams alongside all manner of templates, tokens, trackers and more so you can get going in the game.
Considering the rise of Guild Ball over the last year or so it's about time they got this onto the tabletop! It certainly looks like it will be a good deal for folks looking to get into the game and plastic is always a welcome material for new hobbyists considering its ease of use and the way it paints up.
Are you going to be tempted by Kick Off?

Interesting to see this, is it tabletop, boardgame or both?
It’s a skirmish miniatures game rather than a boardgame.
Just curious…never played GB…what does this not make a boardgame? Sure looks like one.
It’s not played on a board and movement is with tape measures (or movement templates if you prefer). It’s a full-on miniatures game like Malifaux or Infinity.
I would say boardgames broadly would have set spaces (squares, hexagons etc) for movement and set boards and more commonly have tokens/ meeples instead of minis whereas skirmish or tabletop games would use a free board/ pitch and measure movement with tapes so movement is 360 degrees rather than Up/down/left/right. There’s a lot of crossover though e.g. Kingdom Death has features of both. I’ve not played GB either though
I guess the key difference is you move using a tape-measure, rather than spaces on a board.
I do play with Morticians and maybe should have wordedy initial post better. I feel this is almost a pitch towards the boardgame market, as in this set up in a single box you could imagine this being available at stores that deal in boardgames and not so much tabletop wargames.
I think that’s intentional, it is a skirmish game but with board game packaging and ready to play out of the box. It’s not a traditional style starter.
It has cropped up in discussions in my Dreadball group: a “gateway drug” to get the more boardgame-centric to pick up a tape measure 😉
Completely agree, ready to rock with no assembly is massive. I am hoping it helps ignite the game locally while demo well received not really getting a lot of local play. Think this might draw in more of the on the fence players.
The ‘board’ is just a football pitch. It’s played a lot like warmachine but with a football. I can vouch for it being tremendous fun. Both an exciting sports game (faster and more fun than Blood Bowl) and a hilarious beat ‘me up. This box set is fantastic value.
Yes, with all that it comes with, for sure.
You get two full teams in the box, which gives everything you need for two players to start playing Guild Ball.
Great to see it in plastic! So tired of metal models (recently been losing the will to live putting some Infinity together).
I’ve found that the Infinity miniatures glue up so much better after I’ve washed them. Because of the fine detail and thin limbs, there is mold release on the figs that interferes with the curing properties of CA superglue.
This looks like a good starter set for GB; which I have been looking at for some time now and does anybody know how much this will cost?
It is £50
Thanks for that. That’s a nice price so will have to buy.
Always wanted to try Guild Ball, so I will get this of course.
that’s a great deal for all the stuff included in the box.
although, if the models are snap-fit, will the detail on them be as good as the usual models?
They could be single piece models like Zombicide uses.
I suspect it’s more than good enough from a boardgaming point of view.
And I think that if need be you could always buy the metal/resin versions of these teams as a kind of ‘upgrade’ for the extra detail if you find it lacking.
Besides … chances are that if you like the game then you might want one of the other teams.
It’s a starter set in the truest sense of the word.
According to Russ the sculptor once painted you can’t tell the difference. Ofc there is potential bias but quality seems to be a’last bloodrage minis.
I am so tempted as apparently masons have been rescaled to bring in with the rest of the range, plusvtokens and another pitch. That’s even with having both teams.
My understanding is that minis are multi-part and pre-assembled rather than single-piece.
Yep, confirmed in the e-mail today. I more meant in terms of sharpness of details. Tokens look card but to be honest doesn’t really put me off. However, may fight the shiny and pick up hunters but this seems very nice for demo as well – less concern on a chip. Hopefully the 3 man cards will come out for these guilds as well.
Quite interested in this one lets see what it will deliver.
Getting this!!!!!
If anyone is interested in checking it out, all of the rules are free and they have downloads to print off standups and cards to try the game out.
That’s really nice.
Just a shame they aren’t in metal like the Infinity box. The sculpts for Guild Ball are wonderful and you can’t get the precision sharpness in plastic that you can in metal. You can always tell there is less depth in the details.
You can still buy all those minis in metal. This box has been done in plastic to make it more accessible (by keeping costs down and making it easier to pick up and play).
Oh, I know. I own several teams. I just never really liked the idea that the starter boxes or the two player sets for games were always of different materials than the rest of the ranges. If you are a plastic lover, once you get this set you might feel trapped because nothing else is in plastic.
I’ve been planning on getting into Guildball for a while, but I always seem to hit a mental roadblock.
This should do the job nicely!
Yeah. This is something I’ve been waiting for as well.
Maybe I will finally to the PnP before this releases too.
If I didn’t already have the Masons team this would be perfect for me. That said, I still plan on getting it for the Brewers, double-sided board, and everything else!
I think in terms of the amount of tactical depth and number of games you’ll be playing with only stuff that’s included in the box this is the best starter set ever released. The value if that that price ends up being correct is really astounding.
Anyone have any thoughts on what other starting sets are awesome values like this if there are any? Maybe the DZC one..
The price is correct 🙂 http://store.guildball.com/new-releases/kick-off The DzC set gives you 3D terrain, albeit GB doesn’t really need it, and a full rulebook, albeit the full GB rulebook is a free PDF and you’ll likely only be missing the fluff and the full unit stats from what you get in the box. What separates this set from other 2-Player sets for minis games is you’re getting two full forces. The likes of DzC and Infinity give you only partial forces. If memory serves the DzC box is well under 1500pts per side. Now, granted, GB has the advantage of needing… Read more »
Thanks for your reply! True GB has an advantage in that you only need six minis per side. Still I’m a sucker for a box that feels complete theres something about it that excites me. I hope the playing field and tokens are nice thick cardboard and not too papery. Is its that nice stuff with the sort of waffley texture then I’ll be really happy.
@kingsoulbo Rich one of the creators said on FB board is a solid board game quality material. Pics seem to show tokens seem to be ffg thickness card stock.

Awesome news, thanks friend
guild ball and blood bowl. its going to be tough to break into for anyone outside of these two now. let battle commence.
Very tempted with this. Fantastic value and it’s one of the few games I’ve really enjoyed the background for despite never playing. Minis are great too.
Do we pre-order? Is it a Kickstarter? With the plastic one pieces – I’m in!
Good to see the money being spent smartly on plastics..
It’s a pre-order for a November release.
