The Sylvaneth Sprout Forth For Warhammer Age Of Sigmar
July 2, 2016 by brennon
Games Workshop have now added the Sylvaneth to their webstore for you to pre-order for Age of Sigmar. Alarielle The Everqueen has roused those that dwell within the forest in the Realm of Life and they are ready to defend their land against all comers be they friend or foe...
It makes sense that we should focus in on her to begin with then atop her might Wardroth Beetle. She is a magnificent looking creation, a brilliant model that I think speaks to what Games Workshop can achieve with the range going forward.
Alarielle herself looks great too and she has something of the Kerrigan about her from Star Craft. I think you could do an amazing job of doing a corrupted version of her where she might have been twisted and warped by the powers of Chaos.
The Trees Come To Life
Before we get to the regular foot troops of the Sylvaneth we have some stunning new miniatures to take in. First we have the Kurnoth Hunters who can take on three different forms from the boxed set you can pick up.
No silly names with this lot as you can either arm the Hunters with Greatswords, Scythes or Greatbows depending on the flavour of approach you want to take. I think that Games Workshop have created a unit I might like even more than the Orruk Brutes!
I don't really mind if folks consider me to sound like a Games Workshop fanboy for liking these models - I think they've done a stunningly good job with this release and the Kurnoth Hunters are the best of a wonderful bunch. They've mixed a really nice organic feeling into the sculpts as well as the eldritch mysticism that comes with a living forest.
As well as them we also have what some have dubbed the Drychanaught. Here is Drycha Hamadreth...
"...Her lack of control and bloody-minded genocidal urges make her a frightening foe – wavering between crushing depression and white-hot rage, she makes no distinction between orruk and Stormcast, gor-kin and duardin. She is an agent of violence who will fight on and on until her twisted dream of sylvaneth dominion is achieved."
Very cool AND she has been tied into The End Times which is neat, rooting (forgive the pun) the faction within the past of the Wood Elves. While some aren't fond of the overall look I think they've done something neat here to create a mad tree for lack of a better word.
Last but not least for the living woods we have the Branchwych who counts as one of their regular wizards in the world of Age of Sigmar.
While I like a lot about this miniature I'm not sure that I like the grub on her back. I know it has a rules purpose but I might consider trying to find a way to remove it and put it on the base if you needed to keep it - or simply cut it off for good.
Forest Guardians
Leading the way for the rest of the Sylvaneth release we have two sets of Revenants known as the Spite and Tree-Revanants. This represents two different styles of foot soldier.
"Making up the bulk of the Outcast warriors, echoing the noble Households, Spite-Revenants scream a constant dirge of sanity-destroying cacophony, drenching themselves in the blood of the foe and committing acts of horrifying savagery.
Fires of absolute madness burn bright in their hateful eyes as they dance through enemy ranks with cruel talons slashing and fangs bared."
"Merciless, fast and graceful, Tree-Revenants have a number of duties in a sylvaneth Household. Patrol, defence, conquering and crushing; huge bands of Tree-Revenants, with their sombre outlook and delicate limbs make the bulk of a Household force.
Everything they do is reminiscent of the Protectors of ancient days – their intention is is to uphold and strengthen the memory of those beings."
Great looking models. I'm not overly sure about the Spite-Revenants weird fingers which I only noticed when they were pointed out to me by a friend. Other than that I think they look excellent and I like the ethereal look of the Tree-Revenants with their flowing hair and almost ghostly, emaciated bodies.
Playing With The Sylvaneth
Of course all of the rules for these models are free to download online of course with the new release there is a Battletome for you to pick up.
Inside this book you'll get...
- Rites of Battle: potent abilities that can be conferred on armies with the Sylvaneth allegiance, and Command Traitsthat can be used by their generals;
- Spell Lores: powerful magic, both defensive and offensive, specifically for sylvaneth wizards;
- Artefacts of the Glades: relics of war, usable by sylvaneth heroes;
- 3x Battleplans, helping you to fight glorious battles based on the narrative leading up to them;
- 5x Warscroll Battallions, collections of miniatures who gain special abilities when combined;
- 8x Special Warscroll Battalions called Wargroves. These give you even more special abilities, magic items, command traits and spells;
- 1x Historical Battalion, the Guardians of Alarielle, which recreates the alliance between the sylvaneth and the Stormcast Eternals;
- Details of the history and organisation of the sylvaneth, with full background for every unit, character and monster in the faction.
...as well as the story of the rebirth of the Sylvaneth within Age of Sigmar and more.
You can also snap up (but be quick) the special themed dice for the Sylvaneth which might vanish rather quickly I reckon!
Overall that's quite a lot of hobby for you to get stuck into over the next few weeks as we look towards the launch of the Summer Campaign in around a week or so. Will you be considering the Sylvaneth as your army of choice?
The General's Handbook
We can't also forget that the General's Handbook is also up for pre-order meaning that you don't have long to wait before this hits the tabletop. I will be ordering one of these for sure.
Rules, guides, points costs, battle reports and more are all present within its pages showing you how to get started with Age of Sigmar and play it YOUR way.
I for one will be taking on the Path to Glory and making a great warband to shake the foundations of history!
Well...that's how I view it anyway!
What do you think of the new release?

Alarielle The Everqueen looks awesome in my opinion. Would love to see that Beetle with an iridescent paint job.
All of the models look great but….
Drycha = Khorgorath
Kurnoth Hunters with bows = Sigmarite Judicators
For some reason to my eyes they look very similar. (maybe its just me)
That being said they look great anyway.
They do look great. But I see what you’re saying about the poses on those two. Especially the Khorgorath ‘surf’ stance.
Damn cool models i have to say, some of the best theyve done
I feared them to be way over the top, And they are pretty high up but quite alright after all. I do like a lot about them.
Only, Alarielle seems out of theme. And I don’ mean the beetle. She’s just too angelic to fit in for my taste. Maybe painted the same way as the spectral parts on the treekin might help. Still, why change the wings? Instead of the – not fitting better than ever – butterfly wings she gets branches with over long leaves but arranged like avians’ ones…
The quiver carrying beetles are the best!
Sorry, last sentence: “NOW fitting better than ever” was what I meant.
I think they look pretty good, quite imaginative and enjoy the asymmetry thats used in the models. I’ll probably only get Alarielle allthough she’ll get a more goth queen paintjob from me.
I like the models very much.
Just watched the “how to paint” video for Alarielle. It shows how lovely she is and also some nice techniques.
Here you can find it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_hLLRvSLiKk
Quite nice models, Alarielle in particular is a wonderful design. Not quite sure she fits with either Age of Sigmar or her army though, but what lovely detail. If anything the kit, Everqueen and mount alike, reminds me of a lot of the old Rackham Confrontation models when it comes to detailing and pose.
Shame the beetle isn’t available by itself, could have used it for some other games / settings. But no way I’m going to splurge 80 quid on just half a kit, the pile of unfinished projects is already way too big to alow such waste 😉
They look amazing
I’d take the branchwych as some sort of dryad hero, but the rest don’t do it for me. They’re just smaller versions of the treeman fail from a while back. I like the woman… less the bug. She should be available separately on Ebay soon enough, Having said that, the wings would have looked better with ferns for feathers.
Did someone mention 80 quid for the woman on the bug? Seems outlandish. Went to check, but the site is down. If that’s true, I’ll obviously pass.
It’s unfortunately indeed 80 quid, which effectively killed off any and all chance of me doing an impulse buy.
Yeah 80 on GWs website, 68 on wayland .. still way too much imo. But that goes for all of these releases i think, even if i like most of them.
The forest spirits from GW are attacking, very cool looking models and awesome paint jobs as usual.
Unlike @cpauls1 I actually thought that the tree an from a few years ago was one of the best fantasy minis GW have done. These compliment him perfectly. Pick of the crop for me are the tree revenants. I love the asymmetry of them.
The only one I’m not fond of is Alarielle. I do like the beetle. It’s a real shame that the kit doesn’t come with an alternative beetle rider.
Overall though, I’m very impressed. My aversion to all things fantasy is beginning to weaken 😉
My thoughts exactly @erastus
Hadn’t been expecting to like these, but I did like the plastic treeman models and I like most of these. The beetle is really rather cool, although I think I’d rather leave the rider off.
Now that I see better pictures I must say that Alarielle The Everqueen is easily best of those but others are also rather good and much better than most other new AoS models. Bravo.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’ve actually pre-ordered a couple of boxes of Sylvaneth- my first (new) GW models in years! Will be going for a dark, cold ‘winter’ colour scheme I reckon.
They will make a nice force for Dragon Rampant, but I’m also thinking of using the Empire of Dust list for Kings of War and just having a few Sylvaneth arranged in a diorama on the appropriate size base (certainly couldn’t afford a full-size unit of 20 or more!)…
Overall I like these though…
…why have the symbol on the ‘1’ face of the die and not the ‘6’? Makes no sense to me.
…Queen looks good but the beetle looks a touch small not to mention is unlikely to provide a stable platform to fight from or even stand on.
Once I have finished (and started) my marines I will likely build a small force of these…a solid AoS release for me.
the giant scarab? looks great.
Oh yeah, it looks good but to me a bit small to carry the queen, to my eye anyway.
Hung out for the better quality images and was not disappointed that’s for sure.
I haven’t really liked any of the new AoS models… until now. Those models are stunning! Alarielle is way out my price range, but goddamn it looks good. I’m loving the giant bug!
Personally I like the new setting of God’s and Deamons as opposed to the Old World. Nice change and the models really are showing us what the design studio is capable of.
Looking at the first model I thought for a second AoS had had a Mardi Gras faction added to it
technically great. design is ridiculous
A nice model but I am afraid @225.00 for one (no matter how nice and how big) is more than I am willing to (or have) spend on a single figure when I can buy whole games for less than that.
Amazing models, each and every single one of them! I could spend a lot of time painting these and playing with them, which could justify the investment. GW keep pushing the bar for what is possible to do. My concern is that they could lose their younger and newer hobbyists and players. Even with the new and clever CAD aided sprue layouts, these kits aren’t for the faint at heart. Just finished assembling the Silver Tower models. Fantastic kits but some of them are vy challenging. And I’ve been doing this for more than 20 years. But it’s an absolute… Read more »
The Sylvaneth are shaping up nicely as a faction. They very much fit in to the over the top, land of gods and monsters style of AoS, though as a result they will be very much a marmite proposition for most people – you either love them or hate them. Happily, I belong to the former camp; for me, the minis combine just the right quantities of naturalistic imagery, sinister edge, and sublime silliness. If you are going to have a faction of vaguely morally ambiguous killer plant people in a setting as rock-album-cover-art-inspired as AoS, this is the way… Read more »
There is that…

Also, those look awfully like Daikinee elves, a Confrontation faction for which Rackham had planned a large scarab beast before closing up shop…
Another case of “inspiration” from GW I’m afraid… still, they’re proper sculpts.
The metal Daikinee are sweet models! I have an excellent Mandigorn warrior in blister, shame they went under before developing them further. Rackham models were works of art, plain and simple.
Yeah… that’s why, as nice as the plastics are, it breaks my heart to see them shamelessly “borrowing” from Rackham if it’s to do something toylike and crude. Well, at least they copy the best.
All looks a bit Warcraft to me…
