A New Story To Tell With Age Of Sigmar Blightwar Coming Soon
August 23, 2017 by brennon
A new boxed game is on the way from Games Workshop for the world of Age Of Sigmar. Blightwar sees you playing out the clashes between the forces of the Chaos God Nurgle and the valiant Stormcast Eternals.
The set contains a multitude of existing plastic models include Nurgle Plague Bearers, Nurglings and those terrifying flyers. The Stormcast Eternal get themselves a set of Vanguard Chamber models which came out not too long ago, basically the scouts of the forces of Order.
New Characters
The biggest thing however is the introduction of two new characters with Neave Blacktalon for the Stormcast Eternals leading the way into the fighting.
She comes with an alternative head swap, although I like the bear head option, and those deadly whirlwind axes for getting stuck into the fighting. As a Vanguard Chamber member she also carries her boltstorm pistol to help with ranged attacks too.
Fighting and leading the forces of Nurgle we have Horticulous Slimux who comes on a decidedly Oldhammer looking mount.
He is a powerful spellcaster in his own right with plenty of abilities to bring to bear. In addition he is no slouch in close combat either and while he may seem sluggish it wouldn't take long for him to make his mark on an enemy unit.
Thematic Rules
As well as the models the gameplay has also had a bit of a tweak. You will get this dial within the set...
...which will allow you to change and tweak the way gameplay unfolds in the depths of the Plague Garden. Something like this, to help add a new modularity to your games, is certainly an interesting prospect and it would be good to see how fun it is.
What do you think of this new boxed game product from Games Workshop?

I am not fan of Sigmarines but Neave does look rather good. Better than her compares. Horticulous Slimux does look really neat and properly Nurgle.
*comrades*
That Horticulous Slimux is the best thing from GW in forever! Horrible and silly – great stuff!
Neave is pretty cool, but STILL with the “boob armour”? Please can we learn that this needs to go.
Should they get rid of the abs armour too?
Come on guys we know this stuff is stylized, we know that none of it, not a single piece of Warhammer style armour is practical. Why does it need to go? if it was the same as everything else would people be able to tell the models female? All I want is female models full stop, I am not going to put them down because how they choose to design it.
Androgeny, it’s the future man.
Androgyny has been knocking at Canada’s door for some time now and someone opened it wide open.
As for the armor, at least they didn’t add the armor plating in the inner cup of her bust. Having it be one piece covering both is fine with me.
I don’t really care one way or the other, either in terms of more female miniatures (although I don’t actively oppose it) or the execution of the design of female miniatures. However it’s a quirk of wanting more female miniatures on the tabletop is that to do so you have to exaggerate some of the features that make people look male or female. And that means hips and boobs for ladies and broad shoulders for fellas.
Get rid of boob plate and you might as well get rid of female miniatures. For a 28mm miniature to be recognisable as female it needs to have a female shape of which, I am happy to say, boobs are a part. Take away the boobs and it looks less female, move out to a distance of 4′ or more and it looks even less female.
But it’s not even proper boob plate; boob plate has individually sculpted breasts, that doesn’t. A much better description of that would be form fitted armour.
Well just found a new sisters canoness
The mounted models and the characters are awesome and a bunch of the nurgle stuff would go well with dark imperium. Some boob plate there but probably because it’s easier to convert to non-boob plate than the other way around, maybe I’m giving too much credit though.
OTT
I really love the Nurgle snail , he is the cutest snail Nurgle snail I have ever seen. …….gods I am coming over all chaosy.
Get down with the sickness
……. bloody Nurgle …. who knew it was infectious ???? 😉
That Nurgle thing really captures the essence of what Nurgle was way back in the 80’s and 90’s. It looks like it has literally crawled out of a John Blanche painting. Really well executed.
The Stormcast I can take or leave. Bored of them now, female or otherwise
At least the boob armour on the Stormcast is nowhere near the most egregious expression of that misbegotten fantasy trope, but even so it is just necessary. If Naeve Blacktalon had simply been sculpted with a standard peaked breastplate, everyone would still have easily been able to tell she was a female Stromcast even with her helmet on, just from her overall proportions. Still a nice model (unlike many here, I have something of a soft spot for the Stormcast), and seeing more female Stormcast is always welcome, but I would have appreciated it if GW could just have taken… Read more »
They’ve moce away from the traditional “boob plate” design. Most boob plates have individually sculpted breasts, which is what technically forms the alleged weakness of boobplates (i.e. the breasts would actually direct blows down and towards the heart. However what they have done here is to sculpt a bulge in the area where the breasts would be without also sculpting a cleavage. It creates the female form without drawing too much attention to the breasts; it’s actually a fairly well executed design in that regard – it has a female outline without emphasising the breasts too much. Had it been… Read more »
“Boob Plate” has a bad reputation due to some uninformed individuals (mostly reproduced from the Tor blog). However, that poster didn’t really understand the physics or history of armor. 1- The Stormcast males wear “Boob Plate.” There’s not a one that doesn’t have pecks sculpted onto his armor. The reason that this boob plate is less specific in its features is more about modesty (they did axe Slaanesh after all). 2- Most of the physical dangers of “boob plate” come from misunderstandings of how armor works. If you’re fighting against someone in plate armor, you kill them by shoving your… Read more »
The boobplate armour criticisms apply to sci-fi and fantasy – arguably in sci-fi a deflected bullet might still have enough force to penetrate the armour.
However, I did say “alleged” weaknesses…
Not entirely accurate there. A European knight during the high and late middle ages, at the height of the use of plate armour, would be as likely to use a flanged mace as a sword. I’m pro-boob plate, but with individual boobs the blow being directed inwards to the heart is a problem when taking hit’s from half the enemies.
But not so much of an issue in a fantasy world where very little of it is real or practical
Male stormcast get fully sculpted pecs and sixpack on their armor, why should femalestormcast get different treatment?
Was just about to say this very thing. Full on abs on the men is fine, as are sculpted faceplates, but boobs.. that’s too far.
I like equal rights armour where boobs and abs are represented equally!
Historically, it was not uncommon for practical boob plate to feature nipples.
But I figure Slaanesh got axed for a reason.
@odinsgrandson Thing abut Slaanesh and other Chaos Gods is that they have some less extreme qualities but GW focuses on those extreme qualities and from all four Chaos Gods it hurts Slaanesh most.
Slaanesh hasn’t been axed, but it is definitely getting re-styled into something less “R Rated”. I don’t think this is because GW is especially prudish but more because they want to appeal to a younger audience and unfortunately, the Lord of Excess will need to be more about rock n roll and less about the sex and the drugs. That said, I think Forge World will continue to produce their Keeper of Secrets and it may be that the more excessive of excesses will remain but will be available only through Forge World
what an amazing model – the nurgle one, tempted to buy the box, who cares about the rules 🙂
The nurgle character is fantastic with a touch of whimsy so rarely seen from gw. Zero interest in the box or AoS so wont get him until solo release or second hand market offers a reasonable price.
Blacktalon look very familiar.
that snail .. love it !
I will be getting this boxed set.
me too
Underwhelmed… …still nothing that excites in the same way the old Warhammer minis would (things like the empire minis). This isn’t a bash at AoS as a system, its purely about the minis. The only saving grace is Horticulous Slimux which is a wonderful mini. I love the execution and imagination that went into the sculpt. But as for the fest of the minis…. I think its the Stormcast minis (as I used to play with the human factions in Warhammer), they just don’t seem “fantasy”, “Historical” or anything other than “Sci-fi” to me. As they are rebooting Necromunda, I… Read more »
” Why does every AoS boxed game HAVE to contain Stormcast”
Same reason every 40k box must have Space Marines.
I have to admit, I was disappointed that they were including Stormcasts here as well.
For some reason, I don’t feel the same about Marines everywhere. Maybe it is because marines have five factions that all look different, and the box sets didn’t always feature them painted the same (Black Templars, Ultramarines, Dark Angels).
I honestly really wanted to see Sylvaneth or something wood elf flavored fighting nurgle. That would have made a better box in my estimation.
There’s many orders (i.e. chapters) of Stormcasts, all with different colour schemes and iconography. You can also buy conversion/upgrade kits for several orders so you can move away from the default gold/blue.
Agreed. There is often too much parity between the AoS ‘posterboy’ armies in the way they look. Khorne beserkers and Stormcasts and these Nurgle minis, to my untrained eye, look pretty much the same, Empire men-at-arms and Chaos Warriors do not. It makes me less excited because doesn’t evoke a sense of place the same way. For me at least, feel free to disagree.
There’s so much character in Horticulous Slimux; amazing. Great to see a female Stormcast Eternal as well.
I honestly wasn’t much of a fan of Stormcast stuff to begin with, but as things have been added to the range, such as the Palladors, it has become a more interesting faction.
I think AoS is on a bit of a run; it seems to have much more interesting releases; the Sylvaneth and Kharadron stuff in particular.
My wallet will weap when new Skaven stuff eventually appears.
As a Nurgle Daemons, Stormcast and Death Guard player, my wallet is probably going to catch fire sometime in Septermber.
Make sure it isn’t in your pants at that time …. burns down there would be nasty 😉
Does save on waxing though ….
love the female stormcast, looks better than the male ones imo, shame you can’t field an army of them. Maybe they should do an upgrade sprue or something?
I think like many, I’m just burned out on the whole stormcast eternals thing, I bought the first age of sigmar box and it had some in, they are great models, but every one since is not really adding much else, and they lack the history of the space marines to pull it off I think.
The snail though, well, that takes me back to the early days, where GW didn’t take itself too seriously, and models were fun. Its great, I’ll be waiting for it to appear separately from the box.
The dragons added. The big Stardrake was a really nice mini.
Overall, I agree that I find Stormcasts significantly less compelling than Space Marines. I worry that I’ll soon feel the same way about the Primaris Marines but so far they’re ok with me.
I really wish I knew this was the content of the box as I got almost every single storm cast model in this box for conversion into Space Wolves true scale army I’m doing.
I wonder if that’s a racing snail?
Never Ending Story tie in, not Turbo tie in.
