Age Of Sigmar: Spire Of Dawn Set Available For Pre-Order
December 10, 2016 by brennon
Games Workshop has now added a revamped Starter Set to their collection for those getting into Age of Sigmar. Taking the old Island of Blood set they've now tweaked it to become Spire Of Dawn...
The set contains two full armies of both Skaven and Aelfs led by a Skaven Warlord and the High Warden on Griffon.
This was a well sought after Starter Box and it contains a lot of models that you just can't get anywhere else. So, bringing it back to the fore not only tells more of a story about the Skaven and Aelfs but brings miniatures back into the limelight for collectors.
As well as containing the rules to play the game it also comes with Warscrolls for each and some Pitched Battle plans too for those who want to have a points match on the tabletop.
A little more on the fluff for this set...
"The Dawnspire stands at the edge of the Transient Isles. Immense, drifting islands of black stone hanging in the air above an azure sea, they were once the subject of foul sorceries, a powerful Chaos wizard seeking to bring them crashing down. The mages of the Eldritch Council were able to stop this foul ritual, but not before two of the islands were lost to the depths.
To protect the isles, the Dawnspire was created; housing objects of incredible power, it is protected by the most elite warriors the Transient Isles have ever known. Yet cruel eyes glow in the corners of the realms. fixated on the Dawnspire, intent on harnessing its power for their own dark purpose…"
While of course this is in effect an easy way for Games Workshop to sell some more models that are probably sitting in the warehouse they've done it in a style where I think folks are going to be rather happy with the release.
Maybe we'll start to see more from the Aelfs as things develop as we step away from what has now become the Sylvaneth to explore these armour clad warriors.
What do you think?

£50!!! I never EVER thought I would say this, but that is great value for money!
I know they are older models but I personally prefer the older style. This is a great start to AoS for me!
Really, It’s just the Plastics from “Island of Blood” re-branded for AoS.
But that’s not a bad thing, the Elf Lord on Griffon and Rat Ogres are both well liked and highly sought after. Kudos to GW for making them available again.
Yep, this one’s a win/win for GW and their customers. Smart move.
I’m going to buy this all over again. Mainly because I can’t be bothered re-basing the old models and at the same price as the start collecting set it’s great value for 74 minis.
Interesting that they’ve bothered to include square bases for once. I wonder what prompted that.
They will have a crap load of square bases kicking around still so why not offload them and help out the Oldhammer/9th Age guys at the same time.
I suspect it’s more likely aimed at the many people with squared-based fantasy armies from the WFB days. AoS is supposed to let you use whatever bases you want so that those armies can be easily ported across. If they sold this with just round bases then those with square-based Skaven or High Elf WFB armies would either have to re-base or buy their own square bases.
They are the original Isle of Blood bases.
That price point is outstanding and its becoming impossible to resist age of Sigmar, the battle forces were tempting but this is just too much.
Just picked up the new Stormcast box today for my partners Xmas, £100 for £208 worth of stuff was insane.
I’m hovering my mouse over the buy button for that Stormcast box on a daily basis now. I know I don’t “need” it, but its only a matter of time before its at my door.
I picked up the Stormcast, Sylvaneth and Ironjawz ones. Going to keep me busy for a while. 🙂
Fantastic value for money from GW. Old models yeah but they still look great.
Wow for that price who could complain?
I’m liking that GW over the past year has made some box sets as cheap entry points into the games. The models from this box look great, even if they where released before.
Well-played GW. A savvy move.
Who would of thought round and oval bases were so much cheaper than square 🙂
Both round and square are included! Seems the more bases you put in the box, the cheaper it gets.
Stack the square bases and you got yourself some makeshift terrain. I know I’m stretching things a bit, but them basses should be able to be used for something.
That might be just rebranding of old boxed set but it’s welcome considering that those older models from Oldhammer are much better than any of new model that GW has released under AoS.
That Elf on griffon is a classic!
Cracking……
About time they re-released the old Island of Blood minis. They were some of the best plastics GW has ever done IMO. Price point is just fantastic. Nice move GW.
I’m desperately trying to think of an excuse to buy this set. There are so many other models I need more than this, but £50 for all those models is an absolute steal!
Pretty good value – looks like GW are finally getting why they lost so many supporters. Too little too late for me. I cannot be bothered to get back into GW games – I have too much to paint as it is – and I’m not a fan of AoS rules. Should certainly helpbthe next wave of gamers though, so good luck to them.
If GW starts expanding these great prices to more of their range I’ll heavily consider getting back on board.
Here’s hoping 8th edition 40k prices will follow AoS pricing.
good to see the skaven are back thought they were one of the army’s to be cancelled?
Skaven are stronger in AoS fluff than the old Warhammer world. The horned rat has joined the ranks of the chaos gods (they couldn’t refuse) his followers outnumber all :).
interesting & Understandable with the corrupting warp stones affects.
Retailers offering 20% discount make these a little over 50p per figure. Incredible value. The option to run round and square bases means figures could be used for most fantasy game systems.
No one can argue that games workshop haven’t listened to the critics and acted accordingly. games workshop is dead; long live games workshop!
Although the 8th ed rules pretty much killed my interest in Warhammer, the miniatures themselves were fantastic and they still stand up to scrutiny even today. As single pose models, they compare well with miniatures from their recent stand alone box games despite being several years older. I wonder if this is also a hint that there isn’t much change planned to the Aelf or Skaven aesthetics, at in the short term
This was/is GW hitting all the right marks with a starter set. for 2 part premolded plastics these minis are fantastic. Really good to see them available again to a new wave of gamers. Well played GW 🙂
Wow! Cheaper than the old starter set, with all the older better mini’s from the Island of Blood (?). I bought multiples of all the elves in that set from a bits company for dirt cheap. Good to know they’re still around, as I wouldn’t mind getting a few more griffons (I have six).
Not interested in the skaven for our AD&D Battlesystem games, or I would actually pick this up.
It’s been five years since I could actually say “Well done, GW.”
Business plan by BF Skinner & PT Barnum. There is one born every minute…
By Tweaked you mean no book not measuring sticks, no templates and they took out the square bases and put round ones in?
Correct apart from the book (there’s definitely a book in the pics) and the bases (it contains both round and square). AoS doesn’t use templates so not really missing those. Oh and they knocked the price down too.
This seems OK. I like the elves from this set. Hard to resist with this price but I don’t know if I will get this.
It’d be impossible to get now, it appears to be sold out.
It is, but they’re already doing another run. If you want it just click on the ’email me’ link.
lol had laugh at this aos is like marmite you either love or hate but regardless of which camp your in to repackage the old 8th wfb stater set really does show a lack of ambition and creativity for this troubled system surely if your going to release elfs and skaven into the aos world they deserved being backed with some new models not a rehash of an old set
How exactly is it troubled? GWs financials have seen a big increase so far this year and there has been consistent releases of new models, books and story from the black library for age of sigmar.
I agree with it being marmite but this release is obviously to shift existing stock, which it has done as the box is now sold out. Both the Aelfs and the Skaven haven’t had their proper re-release yet.
If what we’ve seen lately is any indication, I don’t think the ‘new models’ will come close to the quality of the old ones. Might be why they sold out so fast. Hopefully they’ll take a hint and make more.
It’s been a mixed bag quality wise. I love the sylvaneth stuff but am not a massive fan of the stormcast eternals. I used to play fantasy (well, lose at fantasy!) and although I miss the old world I do think people seem far too eager to rubbish the whole of age of sigmar when it actually seems to be doing well. I understand why GW did what they did and hope they continue to offer savings and release new models!
GW’s financials are like that because a fool and their money are easily parted.
Sharks. The staff should be wearing a mask and striped jumper.
AoS is a toy for kids compared to what they binned. 40K is next and then Hasbro becomes your master. GW motto: GW – where the customer is our chum!
p.s., I love marmite/vegemite.
