New Old World Wizards Join Warhammer Empire Of Man Armies
December 10, 2024 by brennon
Games Workshop revealed three new miniatures joining the Warhammer: The Old World range for the Empire Of Man. These new Wizards will be joining the revival of The Old World on the tabletop alongside their strange Familiars.
Battle Wizard And Familiar // Warhammer: The Old World
At this point during the timeline of the Warhammer Fantasy world, wizards and other practitioners of the eldritch arts aren't as unified. The Colleges Of Magic are yet to be established with the help of the High Elves and Teclis but equally, the powers of Chaos aren't quite as dominant, twisting the winds of magic.
This means that wizards are viewed in different ways depending on which province you call home within the Empire Of Man. If you were to give off a whiff of magical power within Reikland then you'd likely be burnt at the stake. If you came from Talabecland, the likelihood is that you'd be looked on more favourably and perhaps even revered.
Elementalist And Familiar // Warhammer: The Old World
Wizards aren't as locked into the Colleges as they end up being either and so there are no formal schools. That means the terms for wizards are broader like Battle Wizard and Elementalist. They do draw on the powers of Aqshy, Ghur and Shyish (as represented here) but they have a bit more freedom to experiment!
Necromancer Wizard And Familiar // Warhammer: The Old World
The new miniatures are looking great and a fantastic update on the older plastic wizards set that has done a lot of heavy lifting for both The Old World and The Mortal Realms for a fair few years. The Familiars are a nice touch as well, really enhancing the theme of each wizard.
All of these characters will be available separately and made in Forge World Resin. I would expect their release to come in the new year alongside the rest of the Empire Of Man.
Do you have a favourite wizard from the three presented here?

Looking at these paintjobs, I can’t shake the feeling that the scourge of the black primer may finally have come to and end.
When I look at the battle wizard, I get strong disco or ABBA vibes – Stayin’ Alive, Dancing Queen both would have him owning the battlefield dance floor!
I like em. The labels imply they’ve scrapped the colleges of magic. The first would paint up as a few (and he’s a great fit for a less eccentric looking Empireman). #2 could do as jade or amber. Calling #3 a necromancer, that’s quite a departure from the Amethyst order. Anyone have the book?
Not so much scrapped, but that Old World is set before the coming of Teclis to the Empire due to the Great War of Chaos. So there is just no Colleges of Magic existing. This was basically how it was for wizards and magic users in the Empire before Magnus met Teclis.
Ah of course! Thank you
The battle wizard looks absolutely fabulous and the familiar is hilarious. I first thought: “Huh, a stack of books and junk.” Turns out there’s a face in there!
I’m intrigued by the necromancer. Does this mean that the Empire employed necromancers at that period of time?
Necromancy, as following the Winds of Magic of Shyish, is very different to the Necromancy practiced by the likes of Nagash or the Vampire Counts, which is literally just Dark Magic. Using the Winds of Shyish is doing stuff like communicating with spirits, classical necromancy.
But in game terms, you can do stuff like summon spectres to attack your opponent’s units.
Interesting how attacking the enemy with spectres is fine, but imbuing them into a skeleton is a step too far. Was it always a step too far at this point in time though? Or is the Empire more lenient at this point since there is no magical policy yet? 🤔
EDIT: durrr…apparently it was. I just re-noticed the skeleton familiar xD
Not wholly sure since I don’t ever think Necromancy in this period has been talked about. I think it’s the difference between the intent behind the usage of it that make the difference. Once you start summoning hordes of skeletons for your own ends, you’ve kind of gone off the deep-end as it is.
I really like these. I don’t want any Forge World resin minis, but I still like them.
Forgeworld has the best resin, if that helps…
Why is it now “The Empire of Man” and not just “The Empire”? It doesn’t make any sense it’s only the empire of some men, not all of them. Bretonnia isn’t part of the Empire of Man. I am assuming that Estalia and Tilea still exist too, they aren’t part of the Empire of Man. And it just sounds silly as well.
Spoken truly like someone who is not from the Empire of Man themselves. Who are they to lay claim to the whole of mankind?! That said, what is up with the Isle of Man in our world?? The balls of that place…
😉
I mean, you can go look up the Etymology of the Isle of Man if you really want. It’s a very different context to the Empire of Man, named because it’s a faction of men.
