New Clanrats Sculpts Sneak-Slink Into Warhammer Age Of Sigmar
April 9, 2024 by brennon
Games Workshop have continued their previews for the new edition of Warhammer Age Of Sigmar with a look at the new sculpts for the classic Clanrat that will be joining Skaven armies. I didn't think they needed that much of an upgrade but I was proven wrong!

The new Clanrats are a pretty good upgrade when compared to the older sculpts in the range (see below). They are a lot more detailed and come with much more dynamic poses. The old Clanrats were released for the Island Of Blood set and Warhammer Fantasy Battles meaning that they needed to be sculpted so they could be ranked up. The new Clanrats are a lot more interesting in terms of posing meaning there's also plenty more character in the range too.
Skaven Clanrat Scale Comparison // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar
The new Clanrats are still distinctly ratty and I like that familiar weapon and armour silhouettes have carried through into the new range. You can see that in the curved sword and spear blades they each use. I also like that they are much smaller than Stormcast Eternals meaning that there will be a real sense that they are swarming about, nipping at your kneecaps!
The new level of detail in the sculpts is great but it also proves something of a quandary for a starter set. If you are diving into this with a friend for the first time, the Stormcast Eternals are going to be quick and easy to paint whilst the Skaven are going to take a bit more time, especially as a swarm army!
Clanrats With Sword & Shield // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar
It's not a bad thing inherently but it does create the same difference we saw in the last edition set where the Kruleboyz were the ones that were going to take up a lot more time at the painting desk. I imagine there will be some "quick" schemes available online using slapchop/zenith techniques and Contrast/Speed paints and in the end, if you went super grimdark then the details don't matter that much!
Clanrats With Mace & Shield // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar
I do really like the new sculpts though and they have that sneaky and nasty look that you'd expect from the Skaven. If the base miniatures for the Clanrats look like this then I am very eager to see what they do with different characters and weapon teams alongside new characters like Grey Seers, Warlock Engineers and such.
Clanrat Variant Builds // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar
If you're someone who likes painting big horde armies then there is some fun to be had as part of the upcoming Skaven release for Warhammer Age Of Sigmar. The range was in desperate need of a refresh and it looks like we're getting a good one. I am very eager to see how the new Stormvermin look in particular.
What do you make of these new Clanrat miniatures?

Whoo those clanrats I recently bought for Mordhiem are now Oldhammer!
I’m fine with this though. The new ones look fine, the old ones too.
I like the new clanrats, more than the previous iteration and not as much as the old metal.
That flag design looks very familiar, I can’t quite put my finger on why…
Isle of Man? ?
It’s a bold choice Cotton.
I think it must be a bit of a quandry for the designer. They want to scuplt the best they can but as mentioned above for a horde army that is a lot of detail for a basic unit you will have large muliples of.
However, for something like Mordheim or even as stand in for Gnolls in Shadow Deep they are excellent.
Hoping the PLague Monks get a glow up as i think they were even older.
