Warren and Darrell have a look over more magic items from Warhammer Fantasy 8th edition. This time they delve into the Magic Standards to see what funky abilities these fancy flags give their units!

one of my friends has a nasty combo useing his battle standard baraer with the drakenhof standard in the same unit of grave guard with his vampire lord giving all of them regenerate and making the unit almost unbeatable
holy crap the banner that gives your unit flying and the re-roll your charge range banner. O.o
Magic Standards sound awesome. If they are going to become prolific then I seriously need to practice my freehand skills with painitng to do them justice 🙂
don’t forget that terror now only works when the terror causer charges – so you’re fast cavalry plan may not quite work. if they pass the terror test you’ll end up charging and may then get battered in combat…
I know you guys want to promote the website and all, but not being able to comment on the vids through youtube sucks!
Keeps all the comments in one place so it’s easier to follow a thread mate 🙂
Those standards sounds nasty! 😀 cant wait to play my first 8th edition game!
my brets are obsolutely going to love this.
What’s sad is that most armies dont have enough Units that are allowed to carry Magic Standards to get to use the smaller point scale ones (they cant all be VC I guess) except for smaller battles. O&G hurt a bit when it comes to units which are allowed to use Magic Standards (for example NO Goblin units may carry them if you dont put a BSB in there) so your argument about the spider riders are a bit misleading.
Magic Standards changes the perception of your units and what you want to use them for and it’s a bit of a shame that more units are not allowed to use magic standards (well you can just ignore the rules and agree to use more magic standards). I mean a Rangers Standard in a Tomb King Chariot Unit (on a BSB or not) and presto you’ll surprice the hell out of your opponent as you charge through that terrain piece. So yes, I agree that Magic Standards are my favorit piece of magic items as they effect the actual big… Read more »
My only concern with adding extra Magic Standards is their cost. I play WoC and CD and honestly if put a useful MS in every unit that could take one and gave my BSB one I’d be close to 350pts in standards alone. Do I think MS will be used more? Yes, but I still don’t see them be a substitute for a good unit or two of cannon fodder.
Are all magic standards unique including your own armys ? (that would be a stupid rule change i am going to hate if it is true as i use to field 3 banners of undeying legion which was fair in 7th, and is all other magic items unquie meaning your own armies ?.)
All magic items are unique, including standards (and they where so in 7th edition as well), if not told otherwise (like warp stones and magic mushrooms). I know Khemri has some different rules to their standards and I’m not to familiar with how they work exactly. You have to look it up in the FAQ PDFs that GW recently put up.
well they now say that the rules of having 1 Free Undying Legion banner for your skeletions with tomb king for 25 points and you could feild one other is now illegal <_< damn GW oh well time to find better banners. But there alot of nice banners to choose from now yay. Also with 3 spells a turn and the Percentage rule i can see why i lost it because i don't need to cast 2 mandory any more, ^_^ i love high priests.
can anyone explain the difference between fear and terror?
Yep, when a unit is in base contact with an enemy that causes fear, that unit must take a leadership test. If the test fails then the unit’s weapon skill is reduced to 1. Its also worth noting that a unit that causes fear is immune to fear itself. Terror on the other hand has the same effects as fear but with a few additions. For one units that have fear are NOT immune to terror. Also if a terror causing unit charges an enemy unit, then the enemy unit must take a panic test or else they flee. Hope… Read more »
No more area of effect in terror?
Standarts used to be 100 victory points for enemies if dropped.
Do buildings count as terrain or are they classified differently?
thanks zoidberg, that clears it up 🙂
wait wait wait….is that swiftstride effect from movement 6 and more?Because if that’s the case, the +1 mvt banner is a mean one on elves,as they would become mvt 6 and so charge on the highest 2 of 3d6….please someone tell me if that works,as my high elves are definitively getting one if it’s the case!
A 40man Unit(Mob) of Longbeards, with the Dwarvern Standard ‘Rune Of Slowness’ (-D6 to attackers Charge) and an Army Standard Bearer in the ranks with the new ‘Rampagers Standard’. For the ‘No you can’t reach me this turn, next turn I’m going to pound your face in.’ countering the charge of an enemy and then facerolling them with a mobsquad of ws5, str4, panic immune knee busting Dwarves. Welcome to the pain.
Gleaming Pennant: That sounds fairly decent. Obviously, you wouldn’t bother with putting it onto your Battle Standard Bearer. As Darrel says, this is for units that are always going to be out of range of the general and Battle Standard Bearer (such as cavalry and the like), but it HAS to be used on the FIRST FAILED one. I don’t get why you’d want to re-roll a successful one, but there ya go. However, you may want to re-roll a Primal Fury test for Beastmen and if you fail that roll anyway, then the banner is a little wasted. It’s… Read more »
Nice!
The Magic Standards are awesome!
What would happen if you use a Ranger’s Standard and a Wailing Banner?
Really love the idea!
And also love the Magic Standards!
