This game is currently doing public play testing of version 2.0 of the rules.  I have those rules but have yet to play them so this review is primarily based on the earlier version  The two versions are substantially the same.

After a long break from gaming this was the game that got me solidly stuck back in to the hobby. Even now, years later, it remains my all time favorite sci fi game, and possibly favorite miniature game.

Using an alternate activation system ( I do stuff with part of my army then you do stuff with part of your army) and a roll to hit and roll to damage system, the game presents a lot of tactical optional to the player. And it’s these options that make the game interesting.

This is a ground combat game where most vehicles and infantry are transported via dropships. These dropships give incredible mobility and flexibility to your combat forces. That flexibility usually presents the player with two, or more, equally valid options and that’s why this game is great. Now if my opponent would just leave me with the easy options...

You can blow up buildings! Yes, it’s an option  and it’s a valid one.  Can’t reach the objective? Destroy the building it’s in.  Your opponent has troops in that building?  Even better!

The new version of the rules has greatly expanse the terrain types so I expect to see more open country side mixed with urban areas.  There are even rules being tested to burn forests and defoliate jungles ...

Very much a game where every unit has a counter, force selection drives players to use combined arms of armor, infantry, aerial transport and anti-air. You might weigh one more heavily than another but you’ll need some of everything.

Did I mention it’s multiplayer? Playable as two, three or four player, either as teams or a free for all, it works equally well in multiplayer scenarios. Play time will be extended with more players but that’s to be expected.

The game also scales nicely. A small skirmish with just a starter box and a few additional units makes a fun 1.5 to 2 hour game at the 500 to 1000 point range. Scale up to a larger game like a tournament standard 1500 points and you have a solid game that plays in around 4 hours that’s mechanically the same.

With five different factions, each army has a distinct look, background, personality and play style. You’re bound to find one that appeals to your inner General.

A bit of a quick review but it’s one of my favorite games. I have very substantial collections of all five current armies.
