Need to Learn a New Langauge? Why Not Dothraki?
June 4, 2014 by dracs
Today I came across this piece of news over at the Escapist, and I found it so strange that I had to share it with you. Living Language have teamed up with HBO to produce a new course to help Game of Thrones fans learn to speak Dothraki.
Getting released in October, this will be available as a $19.99 book and CD taking you through the basics of the grammar, vocabulary, phrases etc., as well as an expanded online course for $30 and a $3.99 companion app.
I am a Game of Thrones fan, and while the ability to speak Dothraki would be pretty cool, this does baffle me a bit. After all, you're spending money and time to learn a language you can't actually use. Like Latin. Still, the book itself will also feature things like notes on Dothraki culture, which should make it a nice piece for Game of Thrones aficionados to pick up.
Do you fancy learning the language of the horse lords?
no
Right stop that your being silly
Can’t start this yet. Still working on my Klingon thesis. 😐
I’m not sure if Latin would be that much more useful lol. And this from a man who will soon have to start learning Akkadian! I tend to agree that if you’re going to put the effort into learning a language, you really should learn one which will actually be of use to you.
I’m having enough trouble with French and Gaelige at the moment
why not valerion, much better.
Valar morghulis.
It’s not that strange there just trying to get people to speak a language from the show just like people speak Elvish from Lord of the rings …. not saying I would but it would be cool to insult people in Dothraki !
more like the books then the show….
Well, if it gets me my very own Daenerys then I am fully onboard!
I’m assuming you mean the TV version. The Daenerys in the books was 13 years old :p
Lol! Yes of course the TV version not the book version. I had no idea the book version was 13! I got them moves like Jagger, not them moves like Saville!
“After all, you’re spending money and time to learn a language you can’t actually use. Like Latin. ”
I did Latin O’level way back when and I still find it useful to know a bit of Latin.
Dothraki though? No, that’s just silly.
Right? Sure, Latin may be a “dead” language, but when you speak it at least you look educated and cultured. When you speak Doof-rakki, you wind up looking, well … I won’t say it.
(braced for the thumbs-down responses …) 😀
