I stress ASL is  one of the worst I’ve played

I’d have to put my vote for 40k 6th edition on purely on game mechanics. Miniatures wise GW continue to produce stellar stuff, but damn those 40k rules… The game, in my completely subjective opinion, has gotten too big for it’s boots. 8th is a step in the right direction but still unwieldy. I think things like knights and flyers just look ridiculous on a 6×4 table and are better suited to a smaller scale like in dropzone commander. They can’t quite get the balance right between them being powerful but not too powerful vs other units and not so underpowered as to be “unrealistic” based on their role as a giant warmachine.

The game turns take forever and you are left sitting too long between turns doing little, if anything, bar removing models and the odd saving throw. It’s just dull. The whole you-go-I-go mechanic needs to go away and die.

I have many issues with the 40k rules but those are the low hanging fruit.

Please don’t misunderstand me, @torros – I’m not contesting whether ASL is a “bad game.”

Objectively I don’t think it’s a “bad” system, but personally I don’t really enjoy it.  I wholeheartedly concur that it’s very challenging, too detail-oriented even for my taste, and certainly not for everyone.

This is why people have been cranking out re-writes that take everything good about the system, and leaving out the bad (Valor & Victory).

Anyway, I just missed the line in your previous post where you changed the topic from miniature games to H&C games.

No doubt this will upset a few people but my vote goes to: Warhammer 40K 3rd Edition

I think I agree. From me, it completely destroyed what 40k was and still is in my imaginary everything I like about 40k was simply gone. And those codex…..mamma mia, what a terrible product and weak ruleset. It took 5 edition for me to get back form that (even if, I still have to play a game).

I’m not saying it’s the worst game ever, but it’s certainly the worst game I’ve ever played : AT-43.

The minis were nice, for pre-painted stuff, but the rest was horrible. Lazy ruleset, no balance (which is to be expected from Rackham, but still…), dull gameplay. We quickly came to the conclusion that nobody had playtested this steaming pile of horse manure and moved on.

Although I’ve have to agree on the Sedition Wars entry. Holy crap did they ever dropped the ball on that one !

Off on a Tangent, part 1: Sedition Wars.

It is not really all that bad, and far from worst of all time. It had it’s problems with game components that were sub par and warped, a ruleset that was…unfinished… yeah. lets call it that. add KS Delays, bad communication and such.

But what really killed it was the fact that the minis were in restic. Everybody thought they were going to be HIPS as they only had said “plastic” in the KS. We were envisioning better than GW quality here. McVey being a GW celebrity and all.

and then…Restic. With it’s slow reaction to superglue and difficult mould line-removal was more or less an unknown at the time. And people rapidly came to hate the material, and the frustration with it mixed with the general dissappointment with McVey (a wizard should know better!) went nuclear.

and the wave 2 “miniatures in not the quite the same scale” problems only made the frustrations worse.

At least that is my take on it.

The 1st Babylon 5 space game Babylon 5 wars, it was nigh on impossible to figure out the movement without a computer or a Kevin.

@oriskany can remember when ASL 1st came out and being told it was the best thing since sliced bread.

Mind you at the time most of the games needed a degree in maths to play or English to read , Torro’s Newbury games rules!

@shimond: I should be grateful, really. 3rd edition was the game that caused me to look away from GW for my gaming fix, and I’ve discovered several great games from smaller companies that I wouldn’t have if I was still tied to the GW fandom. It made me realise that GW actually aren’t the best miniature/gaming company in the world, and their universes don’t quite hold up to scrutiny from outside the bubble.  I’ve never looked back.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to drag people with me so now I never get to play any games. Woe is me 🙂

In my case it was Batman Miniature Game from Knight models.  I got it as they began selling their miniatures,  which  i was happy to buy as i’m a huge batman fan,  but as they released more and more stuff we realized the quality, mostly the henchmen,  was terrible ,  horrible casts, even in some of the heroes and the prices were too high for what they sold.

The first rules were a beta shown as real rules,  and after some games we got fed up of counters,  redundant rules and badly written texts.  They  were a mess.

Now their resin stuff is better,  i suppose,  as i won’t buy any of their stuff and prefer monolith.   The rules have been turned into fancy photos and colourful books,  but they remain similar.  I understand there are people who love them..we simply were disappointed,  it was forsaken forever and decided to try monolith ones.

A similar, and probably equally controversial choice, I’m going for 8th Ed 40k – overly streamlined (I don’t like to use the phrase dumbed down but it certainly feels that way), completely lacking in narrative elements (how can you have a wargame with no terrain rules/interaction??). Armies now feel flavourless and are now reduced to “cram as many units as possible around characters to benefit from their buffs”…. This edition really comes down to most dice wins and has stopped me playing it after a happy 25yrs…

On the plus side, means I have more time for other games! 😀

I had to have a good think about this as over the years I’ve picked up a ton of tabletop games. If I purely base the answer on quality of product in terms of miniatures then I have to say Wild West Exodus. Now this was well before Warcradle took over the reins and I don’t know (I bloody hope they don’t) if they still use the same guys to produce their resin mini’s but the quality of the miniatures I received after putting in a sizeable order on the Wild West Exodus website was dreadful. I had big holes in models where the mini’s hadn’t been cast properly, missing details, broken parts, horrible mold lines that had eaten into the mini’s themselves. I was really looking forward to getting into the game and I think the order I placed was around the £250 mark so a fair amount to splash out in one go and I’ve never felt so let down in terms of what I received.

Luckily they replaced some of the broken mini’s after I emailed them but after receiving them I decided to not bother at all and sold the lot of Ebay to recoup some of the money.

The lesson I learnt from that was never ever take renders of miniatures as any sign of what the actual product will look like.

In terms of gameplay I’d say I’ve been quite fortunate to not really have invested in a tabletop game that I haven’t enjoyed. Even when AoS was launched and I admit the rules were shoddy they were pretty much bare bones but I knew it was GW essentially doing a factory reset on WFB which in my opinion having played WFB for many years was due.

@redhood:  Wow, I’ve had a ton of the Outlaw WWX minis and never had any issues with any of them (except for one snake from the second Kickstarter that was missing a jaw).  Sounds like you were really unlucky!

Addendum: Does anyone know how to quote people these days because I can’t seem to work it out!

@theamazingmrg It’s not working in the forum. You would need to copy and paste it and use the Blockquote format

Cheers.  Not perfect and a pain on my phone, but it’ll have to do!
