@blinky465 Thank you for the feedback 🙂

I’ll be working more on them again this week and put that advice to good use.

If you turn you image to greyscale, you can see which areas would benefit from a boost to the contrast.

    Image1

In your original photo, the girls legs appear darker than the skirt (and if you add in some brighter highlights, it’s really make a difference) but you can see how there’s very little difference between the top of the dress and the flesh on her chest; by darkening the skin a little towards the bottom, adding brighter highlights along the top edge of the skirt (or both) you can create a “natural” dividing line between flesh and cloth. The other alternative (which, personally, I quite like, but a lot of people don’t because of the “cartoony 90s vibe it creates) is “blacklining” or just a dark line to divide the two sections.

Similarly, the guys tunic and flesh colours are quite close (though there’s some nice separation going on, as the bottom of his “smock” appears to have a black line before the legs). I’d be tempted to paint the tunic a leather brown, or something a bit darker, just so – even in black-and-white – it stands out from the main colour of the mini.

Of course, it’s all just opinion. As I said, I think the minis look great – they have a natural “realness” to them that I’ve long since given up trying to achieve on my own minis (black lines and cartoon goofiness all the way for me!)

@blinky465 Ah you’re awesome! I’d forgotten about the greyscale test.

I can see how seperating the line between her dress and skin will help. And the skin on both of them is working for highlights.

Thanks again for the useful advice.

Because every village needs drunks, fighting ne’er do wells covered in sweat and mud, and toilets!
Tiny Furniture’s “Sitting Folks” KS starts today. Guess what set #21 is about. :P
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/harvestofwar/sitting-folks-high-quality-miniatures-in-sitting-poses/

Meanwhile, Sally 4th’s “Blackstone Heath: Villagers 2” KS continues. So I painted their drunks and brawlers sets from their previous KS. Villagers love brown! :P
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/blackstone/blackstone-heath-the-villagers-part-2
