    Questions of the week

Is the studio still off limits?

It was when I visited last week but only because the cement was still drying and needs a week or so to fully cure before gluing down the carpet tiles; maybe it’ll be in action before then (with a tasteful rug thrown down as an interim solution?)

If there was an OTT/BoW beer what would it look and taste like?

I have no idea what beer tastes like. I have an intolerance to alcohol. I once had a mouthful of Newcastle Brown Ale as a teenager. It tasted how I imagine piss would taste. I hated it. So I’ve no real idea about OTT-beer either – it’s also partly why I went for lunch with @avernos at the local coffee shop, not the pub 😉

With the new logo for “Hobby VLOG” what new logo will we see next?

It’s got to be the Gerry Can, right?

This week’s pledge: to win a 3d printer for my brother-in-law. I got me an AnyCubic Photon in January and just love it! My brother-in-law is a pretty good sculptor (he’s Italian and had a “classical” education, with lots of art and music and culture, which we sadly lack in the UK). I took on some work so he could create game art for me and through that he bought himself a honking PC for digital artwork and 3d modelling. So I’d like to get him a 3d printer. But I spent all my money on hiring him as a freelance artist, and going to “Norn Iron” to visit the Beastie Boys.

As it turns out, one of the guys I support on Patreon is running a competition and his “most impressive” terrain piece each month wins an AnyCubic Photon. So I just printed one of his terrain pieces and am stuffing it full of unnecessary tech, in an attempt to convince them that it’s the “most impressive” (and thus win a printer).

Of course it will have LEDs in it. But also a servo (for animatronics) and a tiny little smoke machine too, if there’s room….

I feel like saying out loud what I’m doing will make me actually commit to finishing it (instead of getting halfway through then lamenting not even being in the running to win a 3d printer for him!). At least then, it won’t be through a lack of trying if I don’t win 😉

    ‘coffee shop’ you say ?

oh wait … they do have coffee in your coffee shops.
    Silly me.
You don’t want to ask for directions to a coffee shop in the Netherlands if you want coffee. 😉

Chris Can Show You How To Light Up Your Miniatures

Thanks to @blinky465 I know to not touch the ‘hot end’ and use the ‘not hot end’ of the soldering iron …
I was wondering what that smell was 😀

@thedace it’s been brutal since chapter two – and I started with it on easy mode to begin with. The story is 15 chapters long!

@sundancer there are plenty of tasty cookies in regular shops.
No need to visit dangerous places like coffee shops (sometimes they even have handgrenades hidden in plain sight …).

Birds of Prey was great … maybe not Oscar material, but definitely better than Suicide Squad (the movie apparently happens after that movie). OTOH … almost any movie is better than Suicide Squad, so that’s not a high bar. 😉

Best bits were the fight scenes in the police station. She’s also shown to be intelligent if a little crazy.

(also … lots of spoilers in the trailer … 🙁 so don’t watch if you want to see the movie)

How is everybody’s Monday been so far?

Pretty good. Spent the day modelling 3d connectors for some servo-driven snips (some dude on the forum here was asking if there was anything on the market that would help him cut plastic and the general concensus was “not without spending a fortune”). I went super-nerdy and made everything custom-built, only for my wife to ask “aren’t you just strapping a pair of snips on top of a handle?”

Well, it turns out I was, but in a massively over-engineered way. Which meant that should they fail, having to provide support to fix them. Her suggestion was bolts and zip ties and a slightly less sophisticated “end product” – but improved it no end, as now just about anyone could make one, fix it, replace the blades etc.

So Monday is going pretty good.

I got to nerd out making complicated CAD designs, played with some electronics, made something really simple from something really complicated and tonight I get to use my airbrush to paint some home-printed resin miniatures.

Definitely one of my better Modays 😉

    How’s everyone else doing?

Monday continues to get better…. before leaving for work, I threw a couple of Artisan Guild models at the resin printer (including a honking great ogre). I usually like to spend an hour or so getting everything *just so* before pulling the trigger, but I was running late for getting to the train on time, so just loaded up the usb stick and hit GO!

I was fully expecting it to fail: it was really cold in the workshop (I usually pre-heat it before printing and leaving the heater on a timer, to maintain a nice ambient temperature) the resin was like treacle and I hadn’t heard the slurping “sound of success” from the first couple of layers (on a good print, you can hear the resin being popped off the FEP film which is an indicator all is well).

I got home this evening and found half a dozen minis, hanging upside like something out of Lost Boys. All beautifully printed, all with exceptional details (it turns out I’ve found my exposure time for Elegoo ABS-like resin) and they’re cooking under the UV nail lamp right now.

I got brownie points for printing some jewellery stuff for my wife’s friend (I forgot I’d done it a while back) after they went for coffee and a catch up this afternoon: yep, coffee – none of your funny cakes guys, actual coffee 😉 so I have a few hours painting time to myself this evening.

Today has been a Good Monday (TM). Capital G, capital M.

You should ask more often 😉

(I chopped the heads off the knights, so I could use interchangeable ones to create different characters; but check out that honking great ogre…. since I chopped his spiky club off, he’s got Blood Bowl written all over him!)

    @warzan @johnlyons @avernos

Finally…. someone who has heard of Day of the Tentacle 😉

You know what they say: “If you want to save the world, you gotta push a few old ladies down the stairs.”
