    ### Start of shameless copy & paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    Introduce yourselves (New member thread)

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is the unofficial Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

    ### End of shameless copy & paste ###

    Questions:

    • When looking for videos podcasts and blog on topics for the hobby (How to… etc) do you just look at stuff in your native language or in other languages too?
    • Have you ever tried to play a game that is written in a language you do not speak?
    • Looking back 15 months: what was your biggest hobby achievement?

And now back to the show.

Pledge: do another uHH, some more YouTube content and clean the hobby space.

    Answers:

    • Since English is most prevalent language in the hobby (at least that is how I perceive it) I do watch most things in English and some things German. Funnily enough German is a very small portion because most channels focus on one thing only and most of it are G’Wullu products and battlereports for those systems. So, yes, I do look at other languages but mostly English.
    • Yes and no. When I bought StarQuest a few years ago on a local flea market it was the Danish or Swedish (can’t remember) Version. Tried it once… nearly died from laughing…
    • The uHH. For something that started as a means to release stress and enjoy the hobby still it has grown on me big time. And that is to no small part thanks to the viewers and especially thanks to @avernos It’s always a please talking to him and I still wait on that day where I find “that one game” he doesn’t know anything about… but let’s be realistic. That’s never going to happen XD

    Now some coffee and music

I think the new Weekender thread going up is my most reliable indicator of time these days despite being back in the office full time. I’m on my six day week this week so it comes with slightly less of springy step but it is welcome all the same.

Pledge: finish the Impulsor tank for the charity auction and have everything ready for it going live on Monday (was meant to be today but I’m still waiting on someone sending through the main part of the army). Other than that, I got a new PC so setting it up and getting some much needed gaming relief on the go is my top priority this weekend.

    Qs:

    • Not often. If a video comes up in a search in a different language then I’ll watch it but most of my time I’m listening rather than watching and so English is a must. I watch a bit of Twitch in French but nothing hobby related.
    • Not in tabletop gaming no. Part of the benefit of being a native English speaker is that I can’t get through all the games in it I’d like let alone looking for other languages.
    • Taking control of the hoard and whittling it down to currently single digit number of unpainted minis. It’s nice to think that whatever project I jump into next comes without the guilt of “I should really finish something else first”.  This also pairs with managing to get more models painted per month than I think I’ve ever done, certainly than I have done in years.

@sundancer you should be very proud of UHH. I tend only to lurk but it is a regular part of my week and it’s always good to know it’ll be there regardless of how the rest of the day has gone.

My walk to work music this week threw up some songs I haven’t heard in a good long while.

Weekend almost here isn’t it ?
Can’t believe my holiday is almost over … and I’ve got nothing done.
In part because I had to help my dad with his hospital visit due to his cataract operation, but mostly because I just somehow couldn’t get started on anything. I did dive into the Degenisis website. I don’t like how it looks on my giant screen, but the art is stunning and while I doubt I could ever play it I know I want to own those books.

Today I’m waiting for my GW order to arrive, which tends to stop me from committing to anything even though all I am doing is waiting so technically I could do stuff.

    (1) When looking for videos podcasts and blog on topics for the hobby (How to… etc) do you just look at stuff in your native language or in other languages too?
I haven’t even thought about looking for podcasts or anything in Dutch.
I also suspect a lot of them use English (nothing worse than a Dutch person thinking he can speak English … )

    (2) Have you ever tried to play a game that is written in a language you do not speak?

99% of the games are in English. Only things like Scrabble and Monopoly get a Dutch version.

I did try to look at the Dutch rules for Age of Sigmar, but given that we will only ever have the core rules translated it was an excercise in futility. It also showed that fictional settings are next to impossible to translate, unless you commit 100% to it like the Harry Potter novels where even the names were converted to be less English. You can still see the English culture (school uniforms ? really ?), but it feels like a job done well.

I also remember reading a Dutch version of D&D (the famous red box).  Like HP they had made a real effort with their translation. I think they never did any of the extra boxes or adventures, but I’m not sure.

oh … I forgot … “Das Schwarze Auge” did get a Dutch version. Reading those D&D clone rules was a really weird experience.

Net result is that I don’t even bother looking for things that are in my native language, because even if the core game gets a translation the expansions rarely if ever get done so you’re going to have to switch to English anyway.

    (3) Looking back 15 months: what was your biggest hobby achievement?

can’t say I’ve achieved much. I do like how the UHH show has become part of my weekly hobby entertainment.

Happy Friday. I got my second dose of vaccine today and if the side effects are anything like the last time I’ll have a sore arm and be absolutely buzzing by Sunday. I’m sure they put antidepressants in or something, ha.

My pledge for this weekend is to play more Lord of the Rings Card Game. I’ve been really enjoying the game since getting it last week, it fits a nice niche in my hobby time as I can squeeze in a game between doing other stuff. Also I might have bought a few more supplements.
I’ll also be doing some painting, at the very least a wizard  to go into my warband for Rangers of Shadow Deep, and maybe a Beowulf model to work as a knight or man-at-arms for the same game.

When looking for videos podcasts and blog on topics for the hobby (How to… etc) do you just look at stuff in your native language or in other languages too?

I’m English so I’m a bit spoilt in that sense as almost everything I come across is also in English. There are one or two channels I watch that produce in other languages but then they usually produce an English version as well. I will watch with subtitles if necessary though.

Have you ever tried to play a game that is written in a language you do not speak?

No, never have. Never really had the opportunity.

Looking back 15 months: what was your biggest hobby achievement?

Getting back into painting and keeping at it after more than ten years of not touching a brush. Since the start of 2020 it’s been like a renaissance with me. Not only painting but exploring other games systems and miniatures and watching hobby related online content. Before last year I was playing the occasional 40k game with my one army unpainted and I was somewhat board of the whole thing. I only really played as that’s what we did when I met up with my friends every week.

Im happy you enjoy producing the uHH @sundancer as I really enjoyed watching it.

For me the stand out track from Public Service Broadcasting fantastic album The Race For Space.

and another really good track from the same album

I pledge to watch England beat Italy at the Euros thus justifying Brexit fully.

Maybe work some more on my fortified manor too.

    Questions:

When looking for videos podcasts and blog on topics for the hobby (How to… etc) do you just look at stuff in your native language or in other languages too?

    • I watch it regardless of language as most of the time You Tube will translate it :D, with can be quite funny.

Have you ever tried to play a game that is written in a language you do not speak?

    • Saga and Muskets and Tomahawks in the French and quite badly translated into English. Does that count?

Looking back 15 months: what was your biggest hobby achievement?

    • By Barons War stuff as I never thought I would paint Early Medieval, all that heraldry, all the colours, button counters, etc

Following yesterday’s success I’ll be doing a lot more foil application sessions this week. I should also finish printing off the terrain for the project too so I can start assembling it to see how big it actually is.

    1. When looking for videos podcasts and blog on topics for the hobby (How to… etc) do you just look at stuff in your native language or in other languages too? – As an Englishman my grasp or foreign languages is terrible. It never occurred to me to look for something in another language (unless perhaps I think I could get all I need from seeing what happens).
    2. Have you ever tried to play a game that is written in a language you do not speak? – Again, ignorant/arrogant Englishman, so no.
    3. Looking back 15 months: what was your biggest hobby achievement? – Completing my Dweghom army for the Path to Conquest event.

@danlee at least you are aware that you are ignorant  and ready to admit it … next step is to commit to a second language.
Even if it is something as weird as Welsh or Gaelic (sp?) 😉

    Watch this :

I know it’s GW … but at least you can listen to some non English folks doing some hobby. 😀

@demonsub I’m so glad you are enjoying LOTR. I’ve spent a lot of this week fighting the temptation to break out my core set and start over. It’s also really nice to hear someone having used the pandemic to reconnect to something that matters to them.

@danlee the project update looked like good progress already over last weekend.

I’m not normally one to share Facebook links but this video was really cool and it’s brought quite the smile to my face this Friday afternoon: https://fb.watch/6EaZo-fXx8/

Hello all! I’ve been away for a week with moving chaos, and I am still technically without a home right now but I’m camped out at the parent’s new place in the meantime so I have limited access to the wider world. The madness means I can’t really make a pledge, but I’ve missed chatting with you guys the past while, so here I am. Might have to miss the UHH again, though…we’ll see… Anyway, QUESTIONS!

When looking for videos podcasts and blog on topics for the hobby (How to… etc) do you just look at stuff in your native language or in other languages too?

Usually I try and stick to English, which is lucky for me to have as a native language. I have trouble following fluently spoken other languages sometimes so unless I can read it and reverse engineer the words to something I can follow it’s usually not much use to me…though I do love languages…

Have you ever tried to play a game that is written in a language you do not speak?

Never tried to play a game, I don’t think. I used to try and read Norwegian newspapers back when I was a bit more on top of learning the language. Not done much with that during The Event…not had the mental energy, really.

Looking back 15 months: what was your biggest hobby achievement?

In the last 15 months? Not really sure. I think I got a Golden Button within the last 15 months…though my memory is not that great at remember what I’ve done and when… I’m quite pleased with a lot of the characters I’ve gotten painted for my Game of Thrans stuff…that is sadly all in a box somewhere waiting for a place to live…

I’ll try and pop in as much as I can this week, though I might not have enough downtime to properly return for a week or so.

Oh I have to catch up on last week’s too, but the internet at my parent’s place is not bad, but not great, but what you expect in rural Canada. Perhaps I’ll give it a watch tonight. 😛

When looking for videos podcasts and blog on topics for the hobby (How to… etc) do you just look at stuff in your native language or in other languages too? Another native English speaker lacking sufficient competence to listen to another language and understand anything I’m afraid.

Have you ever tried to play a game that is written in a language you do not speak? Whilst I’m a little better at getting the general gist of written text in German and French compared to listening, I’m still a long way off being able to understand nuances, which is fairly critical in something like game rules. So another no.

Looking back 15 months: what was your biggest hobby achievement? I think successfully rigging up a couple of Black Seas ships having never attempted anything like it before is possibly what I’m most proud of.

Pledge this week is to finish off some Napoleonic Line Infantry. They’re almost done, but have been a bit neglected thanks to football and general work related tiredness.

@limburger Gaelic gets more confusing when considering that Scots Gaelic and Irish Gaelic are not the same.

@demonsub What LotR LCG expansions have you grabbed? I keep meaning to break out my collection again, but never seem to get around to it.
