I’ve been a bit out of the loop for a while, but ready to get back into some serious hobby again now. Funnily enough, it’s sort of related to this week’s (ok, last weekend’s) questions.
Questions:
Has the current political situation in eastern Europe changed your hobby in any way?
It’s completely turned my life upside-down. In that – things were starting to look pretty grim in the UK before the attacks on Ukraine, thanks to the big old B-word. But also thanks to 10 years of austerity and those Tory b…. hey, we’re getting into politics here. In short, my lovely freelance lifestyle of working two or three days a week and earning just enough to get by suddenly didn’t feel like it was enough; I have family who are on the breadline and my mum has had her rent almost doubled, her part-time job cut and gas+electric bills jumped from £100 to £310 a month.
So I went and got a “proper” job. It pays quite nicely. And I get to work from home. But it’s 9-5 (ish) and totally not what I’m used to! And it also means I’m not much better off (financially) myself, but at least spreading it around means I know my mum and sisters will be ok for now.
So, yeah, “current political situation in eastern Europe” has massively changed my hobby. It’s given me far less time, but made me appreciate the time I do get, to get on with stuff!
Are you still taking care of yourself?
Nah. Stopped doing that a while ago. Although I do insist (to my new employers) that downing tools and going for a coffee and a doughnut in the middle of the afternoon IS taking care of myself, so maybe yes?
Why do I still read comment sections on YouTube?
On your own videos or someone else’s? Is there a way you can turn them off? (not to stop people commenting – let them rant away – but a way YOU don’t have to look at them?)
Sorry to hear you’re under the weather. Hopefully it’ll pass quickly. You say it’ll be Monday when the next weekend starts? I can get onboard with that. It’d give me another couple of days to prime some fresh-off-the-printer minis instead of waiting ’til next Friday night 😉
March 27, 2022 at 12:31 pm #1725374Nice to see you back @blinky465 , and yes the cost of living is just going up over and over. I and others have said it’s already affecting how often we use the heating, although thankfully it’s a nice warm day today but I’m sure that won’t last. We’ll all be adding more layers and wrapping up more often than burning gas and electric next winter.
Hope you and your family are ok @sundancer and are not experiencing too many ill effects. Look after each other and get well soon.
I thought about starting a new thread but I guess we can just add to this one for now, it’s @sundancer ‘s thing.
Last night I played Gaslands (only our second game). We’re still a little rusty but the game was fun with plenty of carnage. We played the arena of death scenario and I was the first to loose both my cars. Still very fun though. Probably more next weekend.
Hobby wise I’ve started painting a few tents and other camp scatter terrain intended for Rangers of Shadow Deep, they’ve been on my todo list for a while.
Also I’ve just completed Elden Ring, over 153 hours in just over a month, a fantastic game and the pinnacle of the Dark Souls formula. With that done I’ll be doing more hobby.
March 27, 2022 at 1:34 pm #1725378@grayprimer thanks make
@blinky465 uh and I thought you had left the interwebs to find peace and quiet 😉 Nice to see you here again even though the reasons seem to be… not so grand? (Unless I’m totally misunderstand everything… brainfog is still much a thing)
@demonsub aside from a bit of coughing the daughter is fine, the wife and me still a bit feverish and not up to standards in the mental department…
Tomorrow is Monday… is it?
March 27, 2022 at 8:00 pm #1725442they say it’s monday tomorrow, but it probably will feel more like moanday 😉
Ever since Gaslands I just can’t walk by the little toy car section in a toyshop and wonder how difficult it would be to convert them into cars to use for that game …
I then remind myself that superglue and I aren’t good friends yet 😀(oh … and one day my pledge from Steve Jacksons’ Carwars should arrive … so there’s that too and I think I’ve got a few suitable cars from another kickstarter somewhere in my pile of opportunity …)

Time is all I need, because I think I got at least one that should work for me.
However I’m so used to the joy of polystyrene cement aka plastic glue that I may not find it as easy to use.I’ve got so many ideas that I need to find time for it’s insane. And yet I can’t push myself to abandon them forever.
March 29, 2022 at 8:47 am #1725730Well converting toy cars that are partially metal you’re pretty much left only with
- superglue
- 2 part epoxy glues
- UV curing glue
Or you just stick to pure plastic cars.
