    ### Start of shameless copy and paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is the unofficial Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

    ### End of shameless copy and paste ###

    Questions:

    • What game (tabletop miniature wargame) has always caught your attention but you never got around to it?
    • Bringing out the grill/bbq/smoker: what’s your favourite outdoor summer food?
    • Did you ever get lured into a game all your friends love and you simply can’t connect with that? How do you react?

And now back to the show.

Pledge: Do more hobby. Time off work almost 50% done. Need to speed things up.

    Answers:

    • Epic 40k from 1997. If I ever win the lottery I will get myself the box set.
    • Most high quality meat is good. Only seasoned with salt and pepper. But Bratwurst is good too.
    • No. I just don’t want/can afford to invest in a game I already feel “that’s not for me”.

Pledge:  continuing my work on 1/700 scale Aircraft Carriers and escort ships for a planned ‘Battle in the Backyard’.  Coral Sea or Midway.  I have a large amount of the Midway ships both USN and IJN but I really want to do Coral Sea and try to save the Lexington!  I don’t know why but it has always bugged me that we lost the ‘Lady Lex’ in that one.

    Questions:

    1) What game (tabletop miniature wargame) has always caught your attention but you never got around to it?

Answer: ‘Beyond the Gates of Antares’   Don’t know why but I’ve never pulled the trigger on that one.  Maybe I should just buy the rules book and have a closer look.  (maybe I’ll look on eBay for a cheap beat up copy)

    2) Bringing out the grill/bbq/smoker: what’s your favourite outdoor summer food?

Answer: Oh my gawd……….. So many choices…….  Quick and tasty is smoking steaks.  Thirty to forty five minutes in the smoker then reverse seer at the end and your mouth in heaven. Also Bratwurst are fantastic on the smoker as well and quick too. But for the long duration smokes you can’t beat a good Brisket or Pork Butt. About twelve to sixteen hours for those, (depending on the size of the cut).  Of course you can’t forget Ribs, sausage (cut it into chunks then skewer so the smoke gets in every where), corn on he cob still in the husk, and my ‘World Famous Southern Baked Beans’ and add the smoked sausage to the beans.  For a more refined presentation a Pork Tenderloin smoked is tasty and plates well for a higher classed evening gathering.  (don’t over cook the tenderloin, leave it juicy)   As always I like to Glaze at the end with my favorite Jack Daniels glaze.  Just enough to add a touch of extra flavor and the glaze itself makes any meat from the smoker look so darn good!

    1) Did you ever get lured into a game all your friends love and you simply can’t connect with that? How do you react?

Answer: Many paper map and card board Chits games have left me flat.  I guess I’m just too much of a modeler to settle for simple cardboard as my troops or equipment on the table. Also I’m not into two dimensional terrain.  That is what turned me off of the Warmachine Tournament Scene.  (All flattened tables)  I need the cinematic flare. It’s about the story as to how the battle came to be and what the troops have to deal with in the battle.  Not simple who wins.  If your looking for that then play Simulations not games.

As far as board games, my daughter and her husband tried to get me to play ‘Catan’.  They love it so much!  I’d rather get teeth pulled than sit through another game of that!  But I do have a plan that might make ‘Catan’ bearable.  Recreating the tiles but larger in 3D at 15mm or 10mm.  I’m not telling them about it yet.  If I get it done before Christmas I’ll spring it on them after Christmas dinner when they always ask, “Do you want to play Catan with us Dad”?  I’ll say yes and then go grab the custom kit and bring it out!  Sounds great in my head………I just have to make it happen.

I keep forgetting about the pledge, but I seldom complete them… so I won’t bother.

Frostgrave is the game I keep buying books, cards and minatures for… then never play it.

My favourite outdoor summer food is Guinness… or any other alcohol sold in pints 🙂

Not really got lured into a game… I tend to do the luring as I own more games than my friends.

    > What game (tabletop miniature wargame) has always caught your attention but you never got around to it?

Kingdom Death Monster. Got the base game years ago as part of the KS and only looked at the mini’s. 😛

    > Bringing out the grill/bbq/smoker: what’s your favourite outdoor summer food?

Meat! And all I have is an air fryer!

    > Did you ever get lured into a game all your friends love and you simply can’t connect with that? How do you react?

I don’t like Eurogames, so avoid small game events, or ask a friend if they want to play a certain game, then organize a game event around it. Pandemic’s pretty much ended my current gaming group, but I’m playing solo “Five Leagues from the Borderlands”, which has been helpful for me to keep painting!

@templar007 oh, ribs are gooooood. like me some ribs. For the Catan board: I think there was an anniversary edition that had 3D tiles last year and I’ve seen several people make their own tiles. With is great, if you ask me!

What game (tabletop miniature wargame) has always caught your attention but you never got around to it?
Necromunda. It looks punk-ish sci-fi small-scale skirmish: just my kind of thing.
People who like it really really love it. I could be one of those people. Just never got around to it.

Bringing out the grill/bbq/smoker: what’s your favourite outdoor summer food?
Anything that’s brought to my table while it’s not raining.
Our local cafe does a fantastic range in outdoor summer food. And some amazing cakes for dessert with a coffee afterwards 😉

Did you ever get lured into a game all your friends love and you simply can’t connect with that? How do you react?
Kill Team. I love the look of it, love the idea of it, love the skirmish/rpg idea and would love to play connected campaign games. But it reminds me too much of Blood Bowl – the actual gameplay is all a bit…. meh. I reacted in the way I did with Blood Bowl – convinced myself I could make a better game, and just keep and use the minis I’d prepared for the original for a super-awesome-way-better version. They’re still up there, on a shelf, gathering dust!

@templar007 – love the Catan idea, what a great thing. Looking forward to seeing your pledge being “work some more on my Catan game” for the next twenty-odd weeks!

    Here’s some music for you.

It’s been super windy here this weekend. I started out on a bike ride along the seafront to Worthing. Got as far as Shoreham and gave up – tied up at the station and caught the train!

Pledge: Get photo of completed leader on the site by next thread.

I’ll likely be close to done with the mortar and I’ll keep you all posted. I might have succumbed to getting more camels. I can’t be done with the project if there’s still room on my transport tray, right?

Q#1 haven’t gotten around to playing Necromunda or Warcry though I have models for both. I’ll paint the Necromuda and just give that away to a friend who might enjoy it. The Warcry will be used for Verrotwood as it just works so well. The Unmade are great models.

Q#2 The best outdoor food are spareribs and burgers. When it gets cold again I’m glad there are plenty of Korean restaurants around for doing that on table grills.

Q#3 Believe it or not I had that happen to me with Malifaux until I grabbed the Ramos box for 2nd ed. I was into the Arcanists and their weird mad science while most everyone else was into every other faction. Building the terrain was also a blast.

Perhaps we should impress upon Lloyd the opportunity to use classic steam locomotives for his setups. It’d be like seeing “Wild Wild West” with Will Smith as a game board. I’m sure encouraging that insanity would only beget the ire of his tolerant wife *chuckle*

@templar007  you evil man! Now I’m hungry! XD

They’re still up there, on a shelf, gathering dust!

@blinky465  No, they are preparing themselves for the next Spring Clean Challenge 😉

@horati0nosebl0wer  I’m really just waiting for the day he builds himself one of the small trains you can sit on and ride around in the garden XD

    #1828792

@templar007 Does USPS allow BBQ through the mail? Those look awesome

@pagan8th I’ve thought about Frostrgrave as there are so many generic kits coming out but I go back to think I just grabbed Space Station Zero and Verrotwood. There’s enough on my plate as is. The ideas are all cool.

Perhaps the bar for playing was lowered because of 2020. Getting out and playing might still be a thing that needs to be worked on with many solo games out there

@ced1106 Kingdom Death minis… I keep looking at mine and thinking, “Yeah, I’ll paint those one day”. It just has yet to happen. I think that recent painting at my local group may change that. Using neutrals to build skin tones has helped me be less afraid of painting more realistic.

@blinky465 Agreed on the minis with @sundancer, as long as you paint them they’re good to go. Go with the mantra of @gorram on them.

That’s not a cultish thing to utter at all *chuckle* Remember the Mantra of Gorram… a creed to live by. Now put on your hooded robe and slap the fish (goes back to reading Verrotwood)

This week’s pledge is yet another Heroes Infinite model. Here’s last week’s which I just finished: https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1794968/

    1. What game (tabletop miniature wargame) has always caught your attention but you never got around to it? – None spring to mind.
    2. Bringing out the grill/bbq/smoker: what’s your favourite outdoor summer food? – The humble burger or hot dog.
    3. Did you ever get lured into a game all your friends love and you simply can’t connect with that? How do you react? – I tried bolt action for a while (when Warhammer Fantasy died and Age of Sigmar was total junk). It was ok but I’m not that into historicals. I was happy enough to try it for a year or so.

@horati0nosebl0wer “Does USPS allow BBQ through the mail? Those look awesome”

Just for giggles I looked it up.  USPS will let me ship overnight with dry ice, Domestically.  But not International.

FedEx and UPS do have options for dry ice packed packages for overnight International.  They suggested about 10 lbs of dry ice to last for 30 hours.  Plus there are a ton of rules that have to be followed to be legal because of carbon dioxide venting and materials selection to prevent gas buildup and explosion.

It would almost be cheaper to fly over seas, buy locally and then cook there.

That would be an awesome vacation to plan a three day weekend of gaming and have good eats to enjoy thru out the event.  Ummmm.

(of course if I ever make it over seas I’m staying for awhile and running around everywhere I can – to maximize my dollars spent on travel)  (so much cool shit to see over there) ??

Oh well, I can dream…….while I eat some more RIBs.

@templar007 to quote one famous WWF wrestler: “OOOOH YEAH!”

Speaking of travelling and meeting other CoGs: @warzan what happened to the “will travel and play” plans from the weekender/XLBS a few weeks back? Did they get burned by high temps? XD
