    ### Start of shameless copy & paste ###

Read all of this before you start as it will save any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is the unofficial Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

    ### End of shameless copy & paste ###

    My plan was simple.
I had two weeks of holiday … plenty of time to dig into my pile of unfinished projects and continue work OR start a new project idea.
However as I kind of predicted … nothing got done.
I did get to blame the insane level of tropical heat during week 1, but that didn’t explain my lack of hobby this week
And with me seeing the new Soviet stuff for Bagration I *eh* kind of see my next new project already.

Anyways … onto this weeks attempt at pledging that I really shall open my box of Indomitus and do something.

    (1) It’s GamesCom time. Do you care?
I had the Google the name … I guess it is the European version of the E3 ?

    (2) Have you been to GamesCom?
See (1). The problem with (videogame) conventions is that (a) the internet has effectively made them worthless and (b) I haven’t seen an original game being announced in decades. Even the ‘new’ consoles get sequels to existing games and practically zero new content. If it hadn’t been for Rockband/Guitar hero I wouldn’t have an Xbox One in this gen.
I probably may buy a PS5 because it supposedly is compatible with my current PSVR and it really could use the extra horses in those games. However as VR has kind of failed to produce the killer app that can sell the 1000$+ kit that pc’s can use I doubt I will upgrade to a PS5 if that is the only thing they’ve got.

    (3) What video games are your thing? (If at all)

I own all 3 current consoles … and a pc with a spanking new almost top tier graphics card
So yeah I could say video games are my thing.
I however do not have a favourite one. I’ll play almost any genre or style at least once.
Open world is my preferred genre, provided it isn’t full of busy work and at least tries something different.
Which is why I kind of liked Far Cry 2 and 3, but never got into the sequels as the design was more like a re-theming with zero innovations. However after having finished (the ‘story’) in Just Cause 4 I have to say that some developers seem to fail to understand the difference between ‘fun’ and ‘busy work’. Never mind those infuriating ‘escort’ and ‘defense’ missions where you have to defend a friendly object/npc from a seemingly endless assault by enemies. I’m glad JC4 was ‘free’ …

Currently looking forward to the release of Cyberpunk 2077 … and given that the 3 core character classes have their own unique intro mission I will play it at least 3 times. Not sure if I will complete the entire game though. As much as I loved ‘The Witcher’-series I didn’t finish those games either. They’re just too big …

It’s kind of why I loved Horizon Zero Dawn. It was big, but not Skyrim sized. The best thing is that it even the few ‘collect X things’ sidemissions it had felt like they could be done as you only had to collect a dozen and the in-game map at least showed where you needed to be and the only collect-a-thon worth doing also granted you equipment that made it worth it (as it effectively made the final mission survivable).
Unlike Just Cause 4 that has you hunt for ‘ancient statues’ with no clues as well as hundreds of ‘speed stunts’ and all sorts of idiocy with no reward …

Tip : Epic Games store has the reboot of Hitman for free … this was originally an episodic release, but now you can get all of it as a single game like it was meant to be.  It also has a near perfect length. Don’t worry about the DLC missions like ‘Patient Zero’. The idea is cool, but the maps/missions themselves are a bit ‘meh’ compared to the main game.

Anyways … that’s my ranting done.
Did I mention I’m playing Borderlands prequel ?

Pledge: Finish the walls for Necromunda and maybe some of the barricades. I’ve got some commission stuff to finish and then I’m clear for a few things of my own.

I have no idea what GamesCom is as an experience but it sounds interesting. I’ve been to Otakon in past for anime and MAGfest a few times here in the US for games so I can inagine the atmosphere

As you can guess I have never been to GamesCom before.

I like a variety of games and list some from my Steam and console experience.  I’d say Fallout as a series ( ’76 never happened), Battletech (the newest being closest to the minis game), Frostpunk and Galactic Civ III round out my faves for sci fi stuff.

Horror is topped by Silent Hill, Conarium (wonderully spooky), Hard West and Darkest Dungeon.

Then the oddballs and lighter fare can be listed as the Worms franchise, Breathedge, Viva Piñata, Super Dungeon Tactics, Guild of Dungeoneering and West of Loathing (nevermind the graphics and always search the spitoons).

This all being said I need to revamp the pc I inherited. Perhaps mini painting may fund that.

@limburger you don’t want to get a PS5 just for the waifu artwork and cosplay?

This week’s pledge is to paint a model for my gaming club’s next painting competition. This time we were going to be limited to grey scale only, but I suggested allowing a single colour for source lighting or a sin city style and it was accepted. I’ve always wanted to try a paint scheme like that so this will be very interesting.

    1. It’s GamesCom time. Do you care? – Never heard of it.
    2. Have you been to GamesCom? – See above.
    3. What video games are your thing? (If at all) – They’r very much my thing. I usually play a bit every day. I’m currently revisiting Age of Wonders III, but prior to that it has been the Fallout franchise pretty much solidly for years.

So I will try to do some work on Captain Tom over this weekend. I’ll have to fish out some people to experiment with some colours on, but I have have a mini floating around somewhere that I could test on. I have my one Escher that I tested the purple hair on somewhere…

It’s GamesCom time. Do you care?

Never really sure what any of those things are; they are all the same to me and mainly just shilling a product that was rushed to get it out for the ‘new year new game’ method a lot of franchises use…I prefer to wait for a game to come out and both go down in price and also have time to fix inevitable launch failures due to the rushed nature of most AAA games…

    Have you been to GamesCom?

Nope. I have real issues with crowds…even waiting for my exams at uni is a bit taxing for me.

What video games are your thing? (If at all)

Used to play a lot of online FPS games, but now I prefer to play more relaxed single player games or multiplayer games with friends and family. Big fan of Bethesda games and all their silly ‘features’…even if they do piss me off sometimes… 😛 I also like to play the odd strategy game like Warhammer 2 Total War and I enjoy city-building games, too, if I have a day to spend screwing around.

Hello again and Happy Weekend everyone.

Pledge: after getting mightly disheartened with the progress on my 15mm NWE German force I needed a break to feel like I can still do proper arty colour work. With that done in the last weeks, hobby fu is restored, back to the Deutsche. Get the patterning done on some panzer 4’s, for the 4th time I think now, and just do it with brushes.

    Questions of the week:

It’s GamesCom time. Do you care?

A bit, more just to read the writeups in a few days. There’s already been a lot of game news with the coming next gen launches.

    Have you been to GamesCom?

    No, only expo’s been UKGE.

What video games are your thing? (If at all)

Always like a Tom Clancy or Battlefield, R6 seige atm. Then a GTA, fifa and a driving game as well usually. Plus a single player story like assasin’s creed or witcher type.

No varnish or bases done yet, but my faith in the way of the brush is restored.

    @horati0nosebl0wer
You don’t need a PS5 for that sort of thing. I also think the quality of games as a medium for high end entertainment has regressed. There’s more fun indie stuff than what tends to be called ‘triple A’ games.
And I don’t know if you’ve noticed but these days the average ‘triple A’ game is sold in at least two versions (‘standard’ and ‘deluxe’) with the latter you get the promise of ‘extra’ content.

I have forgotten what console game I’ve bought as most of my console gaming has been done with the ‘free’ PS+ games every month. And I’ve really been glad I didn’t buy a lot of them.

Desperados 3 has been my most recent pc game and I must say it was refreshingly different and a lot of fun even though the dialog came with extra cheese.

Japanese folks are crazy … they invent things like “Dakimakura” …
(google it … it has to be seen to be believed … )

@m30wm1x cool looking tree things / monster thingies …

It’s Friday again. Wow – it comes around so quickly these days! Been having time with family the last few days (two four-year-old twins and a five-and-a-half year-old – the half really matters, apparently – all girls. Running me absolutely ragged!)

Before the invasion, I managed to get a couple of minis painted. I’m going to really miss lockdown. I’ve got more hobby done in the last four/five months than I have in about twenty years!

    Image1

I find that Lyla Mev’s approach of “eyes first” really helps; if I’ve muffed up a face, I get to correct it before investing too much time. And when I’ve got it just right, I’m super-inspired to try my best on the rest of the mini!

    • It’s GamesCom time. Do you care? What now, what now?
    • Have you been to GamesCom? I wouldn’t know a GamesCom if I fell over one.
    • What video games are your thing? It’s a toss-up between Gunfright or Head over Heels on the ZX Spectrum

Pledges (checks last weeks thread to see what I promised last time) – this was a cyber NPC so I sort-of hit last weeks’ pledge. Probably more of the same. I printed up a couple of billboards from the Kraken Fantasy Kickstarter through the week. They need a splash of paint, I guess (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/257252755/kraken-fantasy-stadiums/). I also printed a human team of eleven players (mostly from RNEStudio). I might go bold and claim I’ll get them all painted this week….

Music – like a punch to the head, it’s Suckerpunch! I love this album so much….

I have some colour down on Captain Tom. Just the skin and the basecoat and shade for the uniform, but it’s progress. Might get a bit more work done on him tomorrow, but we’ll have to see. In the mean time; music!

I’ve had the grandchildren over for a few days recently (it feels weird writing that, but my wife’s son has two four-year-old twins and a five-year-old so I’m officially “Granddad Chris” to the little ones). They’ve turned the house upside down, had us on the beach for two days (in the piss-pouring rain and howling gales) so after they left this lunchtime, instead of tidying the house and catching up with work, I thought “sod it, I’m going to do some painting”.

I put the XLBS on and got started. On the theme of this month’s thread, video games, I thought it’d be fun to finally paint up my Earthworm Jim miniature (from Thingiverse). He took me about two and a half hours – I’m getting quicker!

    Image1

    Gratuitous Lloyd shot:

    Image2

I can feel another diorama coming on…. some kind of underground lair, populated with flying crows and mutant pirranhas or something. Nothing fancy, just a bit of fun. I’ve given up on Gold Buttons – even with @sundancer promising to put a good word in for my Cylons, I didn’t even get a mention this week  – absolutely not sulking  😉

Music? Of course it had to be the Moonlight Sonata, Third movement. Until Earthworm Jim, most people were only familiar with the most famous first movement (which, let’s be honest, is a beautiful piece of music). Long before I got a PC, I always thought the third movement deserved more recognition. Thanks to EWJ, now it finally has it (albeit for the “wrong” reasons!)
