### Start of shameless copy & paste ###
First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…
https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/
Read all of this before you start as it will save any trouble later.
First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.
You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.
If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.
A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil.
Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.
Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)
And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is the unofficial Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv
### End of shameless copy & paste ###
Questions:
- When you have time off work how long does it take for you to really start relaxing?
- Do you get more hobby done in your time off work or less?
- At the end of your time off work do you look back on what time was wasted or do you just “meh, I needed that break”-it?
And now back to the show.
August 20, 2021 at 8:17 am #1671723My answers:
- Depends… sometimes days. Setting the work phone on mute and leave it at the charger and not pick it up every hour helps a lot
- yes. Well technically I get the same amount done currently (none) but I could… in theory…
- Yeah…. the “I should have done…” is strong :S
Pledge: try getting the test terrain piece done.
Also I need to figure out what to do with the twitch haul…. 😉
August 20, 2021 at 9:56 am #1671772Friday again? 0edge for this weekend is to do more work on the Frostgrave terrain. We’re meant to be starting playing in person next week and it would be really nice to have it all finished. Also have six statues to paint for the game that I started earlier in the week.
When you have time off work how long does it take for you to really start relaxing? Usually day one to be honest but, as with this week, I tend to come down with some illness by day two which may or may not be my body collapsing in relief.
Do you get more hobby done in your time off work or less? Depends, sometimes I focus on hobby, sometimes on video games. This week I played video games most of the first three days because it was easier when I was feeling rotten. Then since Tuesday I’ve been working on hobby stuff.
At the end of your time off work do you look back on what time was wasted or do you just “meh, I needed that break”-it? I don’t and it seems part of the larger “always be busy, if you aren’t being productive you are failing” problem to feel it. My dad was a workaholic and the effects were awful to see. Really the only good that came of it, is that three out of his four kids (though the youngest is 35, we’re all still kids right?) try to not repeat the mistakes. Any day I don’t have to set an alarm to go to work is a good day. I try to just enjoy being able to sit and read a book for as long as I want or the joy of unlimited tea breaks. No music for me just now, been relistening to the Malifaux podcast Breachside Broadcasts the last few days. Honestly, Wyrd might be the best example of making their lore interesting and accessible in the wider industry
August 20, 2021 at 10:48 am #1671797It’s a rainy Friday day off here.
I’ve just picked up Five Parsecs From Home which I plan to play along side Stargrave as hobby wise they both seem closely matched, both in terrain and miniatures.
This weekend I’ll try to paint 8 old Citadel chaos cultists which I plan on using as pirate troops in Stargrave. Otherwise it’s watching and reading Five Parsecs.
When you have time off work how long does it take for you to really start relaxing?
I work in a supermarket so pretty much straight away.
Do you get more hobby done in your time off work or less?
Yes, most definitely. When I’m off I tend to do bigger projects and get more heavily involved.
At the end of your time off work do you look back on what time was wasted or do you just “meh, I needed that break”-it?
I don’t consider it time wasted, but it can feel that way probably because it’s gone so fast, and before you know it you’re back at work.
August 20, 2021 at 7:34 pm #1671967I’ll be picking up two packages tomorrow.
One is the missing ‘Justinian’ set from my Degenesis purchase ( they were quick to respond ) and the other is a kickstarter from the UK. Not sure which one, but I think it’s the Pacific Rim one.1) When you have time off work how long does it take for you to really start relaxing?
about as much time I need to drop the bags and grab a bite …2) Do you get more hobby done in your time off work or less?
Nothing … I always think “I’ll finally get some hobby done” but usually I get distracted by a videogame or something new and I totally forget about the hobby until it’s time to get back to work and it’s like … ‘damn I knew I forgot to do something’3) At the end of your time off work do you look back on what time was wasted or do you just “meh, I needed that break”-it?
By the time I need to get back to work my awake/sleep schedul is completely f*cked and I need a crash course to reset the clock …
How about we drop the bass …
August 20, 2021 at 9:27 pm #1671996I finished up the other Marines yesterday and got a project log posted. As for pledges this week…I’m not sure. I do have a primed Marine that I planned to paint up as a Chaplain Initiate, but I don’t have the base with the dead Ork on it primed…so I can’t ‘finish’ him, per say. We’ll see what I can get up to. Honestly I’ve been fairly distracted by stuff recently, so progress on anything has been slow.
When you have time off work how long does it take for you to really start relaxing?
Honestly, throughout this whole mess I haven’t exactly been working besides school…but I am young and a student, so we don’t really get time off so when I do, my first thought is to feel guilty that I should be working on something. That’s probably bad, but it’s the way we’re conditioned to be these days, really.
Do you get more hobby done in your time off work or less?
A bit hard to do less than I do at the moment…but I suppose I’d usually get less done…but I don’t know. It’s not like I can afford to travel anywhere when I have free time so I could sit in my room and paint more…
At the end of your time off work do you look back on what time was wasted or do you just “meh, I needed that break”-it?
And now; music.
August 21, 2021 at 7:50 am #1672046@crazyredcoat when I saw the marines at first I though that was a strip of epic 40k… then I put my glasses on XD
Some music of sorts:
August 21, 2021 at 1:15 pm #1672211This week’s pledge is to do the gold leaf on my Egyptians, play some Tainted Grail, and paint some Ad Mech. The kids are on holiday at their Grandmas so I’m hoping to have some more productive evenings.
- When you have time off work how long does it take for you to really start relaxing? – not long, assuming I’m also getting time off from everything else. Time off work in itself isn’t that helpful.
- Do you get more hobby done in your time off work or less? – Usually a bit more, though I tend to plan to do a lot more and not quite achieve it.
- At the end of your time off work do you look back on what time was wasted or do you just “meh, I needed that break”-it? – I always timetable my holidays (yes, I know…) so that at the end I’ve achieved what I wanted to do.
August 21, 2021 at 6:11 pm #1672265@sundancer No way I’d paint tilting shields on Epic scale minis, mate, my hands would be far too shaky for that! 😛
August 21, 2021 at 10:04 pm #1672303yes … the other package was a bunch of big monsters and Jaegers.
It’s such a shame that the game itself will probably be dead before it hits retail, because there’s no way you can create hype for a game based on movies that are ‘old’ (and weren’t that great) by the time the game itself is released.Keep an eye on ebay if you want pre-painted big stompy robots that aren’t Battlemechs …
(no I’m not selling mine … ’cause they’re mine :D)August 22, 2021 at 8:51 am #1672325August 22, 2021 at 11:38 am #1672337it’s like a Wizard …

August 23, 2021 at 8:50 pm #1672605When you have time off work how long does it take for you to really start relaxing?
Minus half a day. Sometimes minus two days. What’s the point of time off work if you can’t coast into it? 😉
Though in all seriousness, since I’ve been self-employed for about six or seven years, I’ve made an effort to relax into it as much as possible. Work as little as possible = spend as much time on the beach as I can! Any period before time off means working more than normal, to build up a bank of time – if not cash – so I don’t worry about work at all during time off (after all, it wouldn’t be “time off” then, would it)
Do you get more hobby done in your time off work or less?
Um. More, I think. The amount of time I spend on hobby usually has very little to do with the amount of work I’ve done. But I’m just as likely to spend my time strumming a guitar or reading a book. Painting minis is part of my downtime – I don’t pass it up to do other things, just cram in more stuff to do during “days off”.
At the end of your time off work do you look back on what time was wasted or do you just “meh, I needed that break”-it?
Time not working is never time wasted. Sometimes just sitting and having a good think is time well spent. The only time I feel like I’ve wasted time is when I’ve given up doing something I’d like to do, in order to do something else for money.
On to hobby – I’ve always preferred sci-fi over fantasy and Cyber Forge have been putting out some really good stuff. But this month, it’s all Titan Forge for me. This months’ sci-fi release really does nothing for me, but the Titan Forge (fantasy) release looks utterly superb. I’m swapping subs for this month.

August 24, 2021 at 12:31 pm #1672741Just a quick heads up – the other night, on a rare occasion of having my painting gear in the living room, my wife was asleep on the settee and I thought it would be hilarious to paint just one of her toe nails bright blue (and even funnier to then paint tiny little daisies just here and there). On waking, she was horrified (I think less with what I’d done and more that the colours were “flat and matt and lifeless”). Then she coated it in her (Daler-Rowney) artists gloss varnish, loved it, and demanded I paint the others.
Now the postie’s just delivered a couple of pots of “Pro Acryl” paints for me to try out (Army Painter’s red and yellow have always been a bit weak, and I’d heard great things about Pro Acryl) and she’s suddenly take a great interest in my range of paints. So much so, that she’s actively enthusiastic about me trying yet more colours (instead of complaining “how many paints do you think you need?” whenever another few pots drop through the door – because she mixes all her own colours when using oil paints).
So tomorrow is less of a “date night” and more “girlie night in” while she has her nails done in a variety of colours, each with micro-art.
I’m still not sure if this was a genius move to get her (even a little bit) interested in a tiny part of my “hobbying” or whether I’ve made a rod for my own back (she’s currently going through my paint collection, trying to decide whether to go with a “complimentary” or “contrasting” palette for her fingernails).
We’ve yet to see how hard-wearing gloss-coated acrylic paint is for fingernails – but so far it’s looking far better on her toes than the enamel-based nail varnish she’s being using for years! Not sure if this is a warning for the rest of you, or an idea to rack up a few brownie points that you’re welcome to…..
