    ### Start of shameless copy and paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is the unofficial Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

    ### End of shameless copy and paste ###

    Questions:

    • Stencils: have you used them? Are you using them? Are just using them with airbrush or other kinds of paint application? Do you have any secret sauce or tips on that subject? Discus!

And now back to the show.

Pledge: Do all the TerrainFest/OrkTober/Secret Satan things! This will be my pledge for October!

    Answer:

    • I almost blurred out: “Never used them! Need input!” but that’s not 100% true. Besides from stencils I used as a child for drawing with pencil there are at least two occasions where I used something similar to the currently promoted Anarchy Models stencils. One is 20 odd years ago so I really don’t remember much. the other was a self made stencil via the means of masking tape for the bonnet of my Star Wars: Legion “Luke’s speeder”. I did a rebel insignia on that and I think that’s the most intricate thing I did for any SW:L model so far. But I have plans and I need a big flocking list of things do look out for and to avoid doing! XD

I happened to be in font of my PC when the notification email came in so I’ll post quickly this week.

My pledge is to paint a Raging Heroes character model, then I need to print more before I can continue with that project. While I’m at it I might print an Ork model for Orktober if one takes my fancy.

    • Stencils: have you used them? Are you using them? Are just using them with airbrush or other kinds of paint application? Do you have any secret sauce or tips on that subject? Discus! – I suspect I’d have to start using an air brush first!

Pledge is to get myself ready for Orktober by tidying away all my other projects, starting up a project log and start to get my thoughts together. I’m also in the middle of rearranging my books in anticipation of a new bookcase… and realising that one bookcase might not be enough.

Stencils: have you used them? Are you using them? Are just using them with airbrush or other kinds of paint application? Do you have any secret sauce or tips on that subject? Nope and they don’t really fit for anything I have immediate plans for. They look good in the 3CU episode though.

I’m going to hold back on posting the music I’ve been listening to today… even I’m embarrassed by that garbage!

Pledge: participate in the TerrainFest. I have a cunning plan!

Stencils: yes! I have some of the original HS stencils from Brian / Anarchy Models. They are great and I should paint more stuff where they can be utilised. I’ve used them with airbrush mainly with paint as opposed to the inks technique Brian is showing in the videos. The ink stuff is something I would love to experiment more with.

The most used stencil from Anarchy I have is one with numbers, letters and signage. Dead easy and quick to put numbers or lettering to a side of a building or so.

I used some stick-on digi camo masking tape stuff, and I had mixed results with the paint coming off trying to remove certain layers of the masks.  I have used some stencils that I cut myself into thin cardboard for making basic lettering on some terrain but have not tried those new fancy-looking stencils yet.  They do look really good, but I have less skill than a baboon on a pogo-stick when it comes to airbrushing.

Pledge.  To try to not over-commit to starting too many different things.  Yeah, who am I kidding?   My pledge is to get at least one full project done for the terrain challenge.

@danlee you can use them with sponges and sponge on. Might even work better in some scenarios because the paint won’t run under the stencil I guess.

    @gorram Now I’m curious! Show us! 8)

@guillotine cunning like a fox? XD

Any traps to look out for?

    @hutch feels very familiar XD

We’ve seen your Golden Button project… the only way you could over commit on that would be to outshine Crispins Billion Suns Starfighter project *g*

Sorry Punny, I don’t feel comfortable being that vulnerable round here! I’ve been listening to a lot of The Painting Phase and This Might Get Weird podcasts though. I’ve not had a long commute for a couple of years and I’ve been off the podcast wagon. It’s nice to have some comfort noise though.

Just been reminded that the models for the Space Ducks charity army are due this week so I guess my new pledge is to finish the damn drop pod that’s been sitting on the desk for months 🙂

Fair enough 🙂 If you ever feel like it I’m sure we’re all in for a good time 🙂

Now where did I hear about that before? On some of the podcasts I think? My memory fails me :S

Maybe, I heard about it on Instagram and I know I’ve posted about it in one of my projects here. Just a bit of a fun thing to contribute towards. The Bread Emperor protects

You know when you know how you should do something but your brain just decidesto ignore that knowledge and do it the wrong way? Maybe it’s just me. I knew I should panel line the drop pod rather than do an all over wash. Didn’t do that though did I?

Had to get up this morning, mask off the black areas and reprime the whole thing negate I don’t have time to build the yellow up by hand. Thankfully I’m on a late shift today so managed to get a couple of hours in. Some quick and dirty weathering and I’m calling this done.

If I have the energy tonight after work I might go in for some details but ultimately it needs to be packaged up and ready to post before I go to bed. It’s not my finest work but it is done!

    Now on to Orktober!!!

Like last nights “don’t drink to much and stay up to late because Mother in Law is visiting and you need to do a podcast later”?

Totally do not know that. Absolutely not. But I might lay down again for a minute XD

It’s Thursday again before I even checked the forum posts. There seems to be some correlation between my drifting off from work on a Thursday afternoon as I check out new songs to try out at the local jam night and remembering to check in on the OTT forums. Anyway, I guess it’s better late than never?

It’s a while since I made a pledge, but I’m very much up for joining in with Orktober.
So much, in fact, that the printer has already gone brrrrrr and I’ve a couple of new orks already primed and drybrushed ready for a bit of the old slapchopping. I even took photos as I went (in case I get around to writing it up in a project post one day).

I’ve actually been doing quite a bit of “hobbying” of late – I printed a load of space marines and tried out some different painting techniques – slapchop, speed paint, sponging, stippling and “old fashioned” base, drybrush and wash. It’s been quite a rewarding process. I even varnished a couple and stuck some transfers on (that’s how close I came to nearly finishing a couple of them).
No sooner had I finished my first full batch (I printed about 12-15 minis, and ended up with six or seven I kept and the rest went in the bin) than this video popped up in my watch list. It seems I’m not the only one going back to just having a bit of fun painting:

I’ve still got two space marines I need to finish edge highlighting and to put transfers on four of them to call the entire squad done, but it’s the closest I’ve got to finishing more than one mini for a long time. But now Orktober has kicked in, and I’m already sploshing paint around on my five greenskinned dudes, so there’s no guarantee these space marines won’t sit around half-finished for about six months (just like everything else ends up).
But I’m loving slap-chopping my orks, simply because they’re getting painted (relatively) quickly. Maybe I’ll remember to join the forum post a bit earlier next week, and even post a few photos….

    Stencils?
I think I’ve tried them in the past – I can’t get along with my airbrush and usually find they’re more hassle than they’re worth (though having recently discovered what a difference a few transfers can make, I might give them another try for things like hazard stripes, one of these days).

    Here’s some music for you

That’s what I had experienced when I did all the Battletechs in one big SpeedPaint Attack. Look at the mini, see what’s calling and run with it. 8)

I think at some point I need to visit a brick and mortar store again and grab a box of “what ever minis are cheap and cheerful”. Just for funsies.
