### Start of shameless copy and paste ###
First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…
https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/
https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/
Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.
First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.
You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.
If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.
A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil.
Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.
Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)
And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is the unofficial Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv
### End of shameless copy and paste ###
Questions:
- Replacement miniatures: valid options or just play with the original stuff?
- Rebasing your miniatures for a new game: Would you do it?
- Re-using old stuff: what the oldes part of your collection that still sees action in gaming?
And now back to the show.
July 29, 2023 at 12:55 pm #1830801Pledge: decide what terrain I will be building in August.
Answers:
- It’s a valid option but most times I try to stick with what comes with the game. Makes WSIWYG much easier for me.
- No!
- Probably some dice I still use today. Miniature wise it would be the stuff from the Star Wars Legion core set. Not counting the minis that are just up on the shelf for display.
Music for the weekend:
July 29, 2023 at 8:50 pm #1830843Pledge: the terrain challenge sound like fun AND I am looking forward to the TerrianTOBER event!
I am again working on 1/700 WWII ships. (but I did already build some shelves for my wife and myself that aren’t hobby related {but I did over buy the supplies so that I can build some that will be hobby used})
Questions:
1) Replacement miniatures: valid options or just play with the original stuff?
Answer: play with the original stuff if available. If it’s too hard to get ahold of or stupidly expensive then I’ll look for replacement minis. Also, if the minis just don’t speak to me then I will look at options. But I try rolling with the original.
2) Rebasing your miniatures for a new game: Would you do it?
Answer: usually buy and build/paint new minis! But I have rebased a few times over the decades.
3) Re-using old stuff: what the oldes part of your collection that still sees action in gaming?
Answer: depends on the game. I love the thrill of getting new minis. Possibilities are inspiration for creativity.
July 29, 2023 at 9:02 pm #1830845Woooo interesting questions.
Mostly because I get to argue the counterpoint on pretty much all of them for you 😉Replacement miniatures: valid options or just play with the original stuff?
Absolutely. In fact, many games don’t just look better, but play better with replacement pieces.
I don’t think I’ve played Blood Bowl or Space Hulk with original minis for about twenty years 🙂Rebasing your miniatures for a new game: Would you do it?
Absolutely. In fact, I just have. All my cyberpunk minis – I was really unhappy with the basing. Then I followed the example from MiniatureHobbyist and laser-cut myself a load of 2mm clear acrylic discs. They look superb on thin, clear, bases – and they work for any game on any terrain, in any setting.Re-using old stuff: what the oldes part of your collection that still sees action in gaming?
My Space Hulk tiles occasionally get a run out (though I prefer using scratch-built terrain and the occasional 3d printed corridor!) They must be 30 years old by now. I still use my original yelllow-with-black numbered D8 for Blood Bowl that I bought sometime around 1989-1990 (2nd edition with Astrogranite pitch – sadly lost to the mists of time).I’ve been back on the reminiscing train this week. Here’s a totally magnificent tune:
Pledges – following in @sundancer ‘s steps, I’ve taken a few days off work; so I started painting up the Terminators I magnetised a few weeks back. I’ve only got the zenith base done and slopped on some skeleton horde contrast paint, but they’re looking pretty impressive already! So this week’s pledge is to get them finished (with photographic evidence posted here) before the next forum thread….
July 30, 2023 at 5:58 am #1830852@blinky465 Good call on Transvision Vamp… Wendy James…
Pledge… I’ll fail probably… but I’d like to paint Shatterpoint.
Replacement minatures, or new… I don’t throw away the old, but if I like the new I’ll buy it.
Rebasing… I have rebased RPG and system agnostic skirmish (like Rangers of Shadowdeep and Frostgrave) to add some consistency to the games.
Oldest stuff I still use… West End Games Star Wars books for a campaign I’ve been running for about a year. Oldest miniatures are Grenadier and Mithril that I use for the One Ring RPG which is my other campaign that’s on and off.
July 30, 2023 at 10:46 am #1830879@templar007 will there be any pics for us to look at on your ships?
@blinky465 well, there is no need to argue since it is just a question of “if” you do it. The debate on how wrong everybody is is reserved for later XD
@pagan8th I wish I had bought all the WEG SW books when they where sold of for pennies… such nice resources.
Sunday, XLBS time and boy is it a weird one… what was to be expected with both Johnsons on board and all the alien news XD
July 30, 2023 at 10:57 am #1830880@sundancer I have the 1st edition rules and sourcebook that I bought back in the day… not the reprints FFG did. And I had a few of the 2nd edition books. Managed to pick up the revised rules that were effectively 2.5 from ebay a couple of years ago.
There’s even a fan version of Star Wars 3rd edition.
July 30, 2023 at 6:21 pm #1830905This week’s pledge is to finish the next Raging Heroes print (should be done tonight) then start painting all the minis for Cycle 2 of Aeon Trespass Odyssey. Speaking of which, I finished playing Cycle 1 this morning and you can find my thought son it here: https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1796204/
- Replacement miniatures: valid options or just play with the original stuff? – Whichever you prefer.
- Rebasing your miniatures for a new game: Would you do it? – I have done some for Age of Sigmar in the past, but eventually I just switched to buying new armies anyway.
- Re-using old stuff: what the oldest part of your collection that still sees action in gaming? – Well I’m not gamin a lot these days, but there were some old Vampire Counts models in use for Age of Sigmar when I stopped.
July 31, 2023 at 6:06 am #1830947What I like about the generic fantasy market is that nobody controls it, so most companies adhere to various standards that allow you to play the same miniatures in several rulesets and vice-versa. This includes bases, although base size is rarely a matter for these games.
As for oldest, I have some easily-worn D&D “educational dice” that I’m using now. Not sure if they came from the original White Box. Read that the original drafts of D&D didn’t use all the polyhedral dice sold as “educational dice”, so, instead of opening the bag sets and removing the unused dice (which Gygax himself did?), he added some tables so D&D used all the dice!

Oh, and I have some blank dice which were sugar cubes from a 1970’s Peanut’s “Lucy’s Tea Party” game, in which you had a teapot with (not hot) water and squirted it into the other player’s teacups. Drew arrows on them (can still lick them off to restore the cubes 😀 for random direction dice!

July 31, 2023 at 9:03 am #1830949That’s some creative dice recycling XD
It’s Monday. Hope you all survived the weekend 🙂
July 31, 2023 at 1:04 pm #1831015Pledge: Finish up the dice tower I had printed and get some paint on my artillery piece.
Replacements are good if you want to run with the new sculpts. If they still appeal to you then run the old stuff. Oldhammer sculptors take the aesthetic and keep on running despite current artistic sensibilities.
Rebasing for a new game, tough call to make but I’d likely stick with the old bases. I put enough effort into what I do that it’d be too much of a pain to replace even that element.
I don’t recall the oldest thing that I have still in use. I haven’t played in so long that the things I paint now are the closest to hitting that mark. With the onset of The Event and the flood of solo game creation really I don’t think I’d have much of any use for my collection or hobby as a whole.
For sensitive ears and a laid back morning before work in the heat
July 31, 2023 at 6:56 pm #1831084Finished my latest mini last night: https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1794968/
This was my first attempt at “proper” OSL. In the past I’d just drybrush white then glaze a colour. It works well for en-masse across an army but isn’t great for characters. I’m happy with how this turned out for a first try.
August 1, 2023 at 11:44 am #1831151Looks better then my first try.
Tuesday and also August 1st. You know what that means? It’ll be uHH tonight and I have selected the terrain project to challenge @brennon with. Or rather the YouTube voters have 🙂
Also work is exhausting today. Why? Because I have a Laptop here that costs more than 2500€ and is DOA. Dead on arrival. Not completely dead but freezing every now and again without warning. And because I’m doing this for years now I’ve done every test and trial prior to calling the support of the manufacturer. So when I called them it was me just going “yes, did that. That too. Also that. And this” so after 5 minutes a technician was scheduled to get here tomorrow and change the inner workings of the machine.
You’d think buying stuff that expensive would keep you safe from stuff being fucked. (Also not my laptop but customer)
Anyhow, looking forward to uHH tonight and what ever comes next
August 1, 2023 at 1:09 pm #1831154@templar007 We do have wonderful Orktober. I think that the random interspersed “Terrain Toss Out.. just get it out there” could be a counterpoint to the Spring Clean Challenge. Spring and Autumnal equinox type of thing. We are after all diurnal primates that do like our sunshine and clocks.
@danlee more Raging Hardon figures? Sounds like a @warzan issue ? Good work on the OSL practice. We all do nothing more than practice every time we move paint and can’t go wrong.
@ced1106 Why does one lick dice?
@sundancer Congrats on having got off your butt to finish terrain. Boards do need love. I’ll be sure to keep adding to my own project now that I think it needs terrain to match the theme.
Lol.. having done tech support over the phone it all boils down to the requirement of the client company. You go through the script and then direct elsewhere if needed. Having dealt with T3 engineers it also helps to have documentation for foulups in their designs and further troubleshooting. I kinda miss working with other people with brains but the pay was shit and the working environment a dead end.
August 2, 2023 at 9:54 am #1831240@horati0nosebl0wer do not praise me to highly just yet. Still need to pluck the project from the Garage and dust it off. Then I can start putting paint on it. Hopefully XD
It’s Wednesday my friends and it is still very rainy here. I think it’s safe to say: summer in North Germany is over. Back to the usual drippy weather and remain inside. Works fine by me.
Had extra fun last night with the uHH despite the horrible day I had at the bike sales point. So that’s a huge plus.
Now coffee and more work.
Stay safe!
