First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.
You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.
If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.
A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil.
Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.
Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

Usually I start scribbling and taking note and then start. If I don’t start soon after projects tend to be forgotten. Sadly.
I only tend to participate as a player and I only play fluff lists. So planning is really and afterthought. I loose anyway so I make stuff for fun 🙂
Usually it doesn’t. Because I set aside a fixed amount of money each month for hobby it accumulates if I don’t spent any in one month (as rarely as that happens) But this time. Oh boy did Kromlech do a number on me with this one.

Pledge: relates to the planning topic. Given I have basically finished my TerrainFest project on time, I will also plan what I will do hobby wise in November and timebox it. I’m currently considering painting projects in: Middle Earth, Judge Dredd, The Drowned Earth or Barons’ War.

I write few things down and make some drawings. Nothing that goes terribly far, but just to have a gist of the idea down. I have way more of these plans in my Notes app than even come to fruition.

With my backlog of not-started stuff, I generally don’t need to buy anything. And if I choose to, I’m lucky enough to be able to afford anything I reasonably have time to do with ease.
Pledge is an ongoing for the One Ring rpg using a custom setting the One Ride (Bikers). I’ve outlined the character sheet and renamed many skills… next step a functional character sheet.
I often get inspired on the way to work, at work, or during the night. I make notes asap and later in the day make a more coherent version for the ongoing idea.
Don’t generally participate in events. Usually only go to UK Games Expo and that’s my shopping trip for gaming.
I buy stuff when the inpulse takes me. If I would have to save up for something then it’s obviously too expensive for me to buy. Seldom spend more £50 on single item with the odd exception of a big game upto maybe £150… last one was Shatterpoint. As mentioned above, UK Games Expo is my big splash shopping trip and I allow myself £200-400 for that.
This week I need to finish off Terrainfest which is carrying on from last week. So while I made good progress I have 6 of the buildings left to by Tuesday. They are built and primed so maybe possible.

Sometimes years ahead. I tend to have long term projects. For example even before the old world was due to come back I have been building up my old bretonnia army. Picking up models if I see them cheap during the year.
While I do plan out at the start of the year what I want to do often I get distracted by more exciting short term projects. The mordhiem project is a good example of watching some people playing it before it snowballed into a new project.

Typically when entering a tournament if it requires a new army typically about 2 months. So the first month will be background planning, buying the models building them. I like to give myself 4-6 weeks to get them painted. It is always a bit of panic at the end to get finished.

I allocated a budget each month for “treats”. Treats can be getting coffee out, take away food, day trip out, going for drinks, video games and of course models. So I have to make choices about what I spend the money on. I found it helps me to cut down on take aways, knowing you can get an model rather than a cup of coffee. If I dont spend it all in the month it rolls over.
Not going to make a pledge this week – my mental health is in the toilet again and I just don’t have the energy to do much more than a day at work and maybe a little Stardew Valley in the evening. If I do manage anything it will be some more skellies.

I am really bad for having an idea and then obsessing over it for days, almost to the exclusion of anything else. I drift off at work thinking about it and I daydream constantly. Sometimes that is enough, other times I’ll pick up a couple of books to fuel it. If it lasts more than a week, I’m probably buying minis (or even worse now, stls) even if I don’t realistically have the time to start the project. This is why I have so many started projects and so few finished ones. Fortunately it tends to only be one box at a time rather than a whole army. It is also why I go through my stash periodically and sell on “old” projects. Poor impulse control clashes with limited storage space and guilt over wasted money.

In both cases, because of my inability to stay focused on one thing, I have to plan far ahead and chip away here and there.

It is pretty rare that something catches my eye enough that I put money aside for it. I tend to see things and then try to wait until a good deal/sale/discount comes up on it. I finally picked up the Hellboy board game this week because it is on 30% through Mantic. I do find those kind of teaser videos useful though – now I know not to bother saving for Kromlech next Orktober because I hate greatcoat fetish orks.

Thank you everyone for chiming in this detailed in these questions and apologies that I am unable to answer all your posts. It’s a real pain in the butt for me to loose track on all the threads. Maybe next week I’ll come up with one question that really sparks a debate and is a bit more then just a status inquiry.

I definitely am taking it easy and not pushing myself but equally hobby is a large part of how I de-stress from life. Today was my only day off this week so it was a write-off in terms of usual weekend housework etc. Instead I had a movie day where I got through the 2019 Hellboy, the 1999 Thomas Crown Affair and some of the longer videos on my YouTube watch later list. I also managed nine more skeletons. The basing is still drying on them but that’s 21 done with nine more ready to work on this week.
I have a question for those of you who have been around the hobby a long time. What do you look for in battle reports? I only watch the occasional video and rarely read text versions. What is it about them that keeps and holds your attention?
Last time I read a battle report with great interest it was somewhere between 1997 and 2000. Because YouTube didn’t exists and neither did video battle reports. (YouTube launched 02/2005)
So what makes me watch a battle report? Most importantly: fixed cameras. If the BatRep is filmed with moving cameras all the time it’s a no go for me. That kind makes me seasick. Also its hard to focus on anything on the table. Second important thing: I must stand/like the ones playing and their interaction. If it’s a genuine friendly game I do enjoy it. When it feels like a paid promotion or something that is just done to rake in clicks than that’s usually a turn off. Third thing: well cut and edited video. Having things shown on screen (charts, info), time consuming “non gameplay” cut and overall “good quality” keeps me entertained.
Oh and it must be a game I either play myself or have an interest in playing.
I’m not sure I would read an online BatRep to be fair because I really dislike reading walls of text on a monitor but in a printed format I think I would like enjoy a BatRep like they did in the White Dwarves of 1997.
I also would like to write one up but I am very lazy at taking notes and pictures so usually it’s all a mess XD

Jump in, get all enthusiastic, expect to give up and find something more interesting, anywhere between 50% and 75% done.

As a player, the absolute minimum; if models need painting, paint them. If everything is provided, just turn up and play. Don’t take it seriously! If giving a demo, the opposite extreme – try to get as much in place as possible, try to cover every angle, make sure it’s as easy as possible for people to just turn up and play. Especially at shows, I like to see people having a good time. Whether that’s providing an opponent they can beat and take a whooping in good humour, or running a demo that is as easy and as fun as possible to join in with.

Advertising Orktober 2024 during Orktober 2023 just feels wrong to me.
I certainly wouldn’t start saving up now! If it’s more than a month or two of saving, it’s too expensive for a hobby whim.
I’m watching the video releases in reverse order this week – just watched the chat show, now onto the weekender.
Interesting to see the disillusionment with Kickstarter finally kicking in. Just amazed it’s taken this long for it to be said out loud: Kickstarter has been little more than a pre-order system for years and years now. And the tabletop/gaming industry seems to have pushed it in that direction more than just about any other. And over the last few years, Ontabletop has helped push and promote this kind of “vapourware” at lot (one of my biggest issues with the current post-covid format is less that the guys are no longer in the studio, but more that it’s become a discussion show about pre-release PR for shiny new things found on websites – much of which doesn’t actually exist at the time it’s being discussed!)
So it’s interesting to see even the crew recognise that Kickstarter is a shadow of its former self and nothing like its originally intended purpose – to help new projects raise funds to get to production – and is little more than a pre-order system that takes a 30% cut of revenue (which is factored into the selling price when new products are launched). I’m just a little confused as to “why now?”. Because it’s been this way for years and years.
I also suspect that many who buy their tabletop games from Kickstarter are “collectors of games” rather than players of games (in the same way many of us collect many more miniatures than we ever actually paint or play games with). I do wonder how many of these releases are actually out of favour by the time they are delivered, as everyone has already moved on to the next new shiny thing – it’s not the games themselves that are exciting, but the promise of the next one being ever more awesome than the last one you bought and put on your shelf, unopened?

I’m pretty sure that Gerry and I on the uHH and Paul & David at the Yellow Belly tabletop said so months ago. Also, let’s not forget that people doing kickstarters sometimes pay sites like OTT for covering them which in turn makes them able to provide us with this forum and project system. So it’s rather reasonable to talk “bad” about that business model. If you know what I mean. Words today are sticky in my brain.
