One of the best things I ever did was swap a drive-commute for a bike ride.
Maybe its’ because Brighton isn’t exactly set up for driving anyway (it takes about 30 minutes to drive into town, 50 minutes if I go by bus, anywhere between 15 minutes and 4 hours by train) but it consistently takes just 25 minutes by bike.
Instead of leaving at 8.30am to get to the co-working office for 9am, I’d set out before eight, make it a leisurely ride, and stop for coffee and a chat along the way. If you’re going to get wet (whether it’s raining or you’re just an out-of-shape overweight heavy-sweater like I was) just take a change of shirt with you.
Honestly, it turned the commute from a chore into something to look forward to.
You spend just as much as you would on petrol, but on nice things like coffee and cake (and the occasional breakfast). Yep, it means you spend a bit more of your day travelling – but it’s not the only thing you’re doing; it’s not the dead-eyed drive to/from that place that keeps you away from your family – it’s like getting extra leisure time back in your day! (and it’s really lovely when friends/family unexpectedly meet you at a cafe or bar on the way home.)
Bike-bum wears off after about three weeks.
It’s not so much the same for me as at 6:00 am the trip via car takes 10 minutes and not 30 like on bike. Back home at 4pm it’s 30 minutes for both.
But all gnashing of teeth is relatively useless as I don’t have any choice at the moment.
I walk to work every day and have done for nearly 30 years. It takes me about 25 minutes.
Admitedly I don’t have a driving option as I don’t drive and it can be a chore in the rain, or snow.
But listening to the birds sing, watching squirrels etc takes your mind off the ordeal that awaits when I get to work.
Walking would take me 1:45 hours. I get the appeal when it’s just 25 minutes but not at that distance XD
Out of curiosity I have looked up the average walking speed of someone my age and calculated how long it would take for myself to walk one way to work.
Two and one half HOURS! YIKES!!!
I probably walk faster then the average person, (my wife has always complained that I walk too fast), but there is no way that I would voluntarily start and finish my day walking six miles. Also, only half the mileage is protected. The rest is exposed to what ever the elements of the day are and the roads leading there on the second half have no sidewalks. High speed roadways and walking are always sketchy.
But it is good to know how long it would take to walk if I found myself in an unplanned excursion. ?
It’s Monday.
Still have 3 days of “of work” so I can steel myself for the day I need to jump onto the bicycle to work.
Coffee is getting cold.
Brewhouse bash is coming along nicely.
Last of the Cycle 2 models painted. Now I just need to spend an hour or two setting up the board game for Cycle 2 and then I can get back to playing. https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1796204/
Go back playing? With a battle report @danlee ? XD
I’ve made something (hopefully) useful. Added small skulls to my speedpaints to find the proper paint more easily.
@sundancer I did a battle report a few posts back covering the finale from Cycle 1. I did not go well.
@sundancer you’ll have to read it to find out.
@sundancer I did include a lot of pictures!
