    ### Start of shameless copy and paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is the unofficial Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

    ### End of shameless copy and paste ###

    Questions:

    • What is your favourite way of spending your birthday
    • Do you like beer and if yes what kind of beer?
    • Eating outside when the bright evil daystar is shining: do you use gas, coal or a different method of cooking your meals?

And now back to the show.

Pledge: continue the terrain project for the epic showdown with @brennon

Also I need to send people their partners for the secret Santa!

    Answers:

    • Sit with close friends and family, nice food and a relaxed drink.
    • Yes. Details on a postcard.
    • When it comes to taste I really like coal the most but gas really has it’s advantages in regards of comfort.

No music today. Still catching up on the weekender!

    See you tomorrow.

Pledge: Building more 1/700 ships.  Now starting on some of the German Navy WWII.  (Bismarck, Prinz Eugen, Graf Zeppelin) I’m still hunting for German destroyers and other support ships. *** I have been shooting some video and pics of the project.  I’m hoping to finally produce something worthy of sharing with my hobby friends.  ((fingers crossed)) ***

Side note:: Am I alone in my frustration with modern social society and it’s BANNING of certain Iconography that has penetrated down to the ‘gaming tabletop’?  I can totally understand not having certain Iconography on the walls of your gaming room or on a banner at your gaming table at an event and such.  But to tell gamers that you can’t use it on the models or the miniatures is ludicrous if it is a historical game that your participating in.  ?  it’s like an altering of history.  Isn’t it?

    Questions:

    1) What is your favourite way of spending your birthday?

Answer: Hobby Hobby Hobby. (friends have drifted away, family sees hobby as wastefulness {ie- time & money})

My wife supports my love of hobby but doesn’t really understand why i like it so much.

    2)  Do you like beer and if yes what kind of beer?

Answer:  I’m not a participant in the enjoyment of alcohol.  I do enjoy Expresso and Tea and various Lemonades.

    3)  Eating outside when the bright evil daystar is shining: do you use gas, coal or a different method of cooking your meals?

Answer:  I prefer to ‘Smoke Meats’ and such with woods.  Hard woods, fruit woods and nut woods.  Lump charcoal is an inexpensive natural heat builder placing the hard woods and such on top the fire to provide the smoke to infuse in the meat or veggies (or even cheese if done carefully).

I have this week off so my pledge is to finish all the models for cycle two of Aeon Trespass Odyssey.

    1. What is your favourite way of spending your birthday? – I don’t have a birthday ritual or custom. Most years I treat it like any other day. I usually just treat myself to a boost to my gaming budget.
    2. Do you like beer and if yes what kind of beer? – No I don’t like it.
    3. Eating outside when the bright evil daystar is shining: do you use gas, coal or a different method of cooking your meals? – I don’t know. I’d be eating where someone else has cooked (i.e. a restaurant).

@templar007 I’m not sure on how the ban of certain icons in other countries works and what is banned. All I know that in Germany for, very good historical reasons, anything that could potentially be seen as “glorification” of the power from 1933 -1945 was banned. Pictures in history books? Fine. Depictions in movies? Fine if in context. Transfers on model kits? Nope! Video games? Nope!

They have since gone and loosened some laws but in general you’re getting odd looks if you indulge Nazi memorabilia too much. Again, in the context of being German with our history it is a touchy subject to some.

@sundancer thanks for the the info.

I have also heard some talk that it was to be removed from some history books over here along with the Confederate flag icon.  I don’t know if that HAS happened or if it WILL but it worries me that history will be altered.  If we don’t learn from history we are doomed to repeat it.

Also, I still see models and miniatures as art but that may be just be me.

It is not my intention to break any rules of the forum and discuss politics here.  Just trying to understand the situation as with regards to tabletop models and minis.

I guess I’ll just look at using the German ‘cross’ on their naval ships.  But was that ever used?  I can’t use the Kriegsmarine symbol as it is clutching the ‘twisted cross’.

Could I use, and not Cross any lines, a custom Red flag with white diamond in the center and a capital letter ‘G’ in the center of the white diamond?

Whatever I use I don’t want to have to ‘explain’ to people that that is the German Navy, it should be easy to identify.

Also, if by some miracle I actually manage to make a decent video I don’t want it to offend and I don’t want it struck down or cause me any problems.  Here, there, or anywhere.  ??

Pledge: Finish the sculpting on the bombard crew and get base coats of paint on the train of camels.

    • Best birthday was spending time together with people who were dear, having good food and getting presents that people thought about giving
    • Beer? Yes, please. Porter and stout are my go to. Kolsch for hot weather and the occasional IPA when desired.
    • Daystar cooking is mostly done with gas. Coal hasn’t been available as an option as the cleanup is the most taxing of the experience.

Verrotwood and Majestic 13 have caught my fulĺ attention and I’m building many models at the moment.

@templar007 I look forward to the video when it comes out as you feel good with it. With regard to the the iconography it’s not just you in being irritated. The hammer and sickle are flaunted without issue publicly and have a place on tables but swastikas get the kaibosh with historical relevance on models or in games. Erasing history like that is as bad as the destruction of sculpture in SE Asia and from Bronze Age Middle Eastern civilizations.

@danlee Getting someone else to cook on your bday is a very handy thing

@sundancer Do you think you will ever pick up a solo game once you get your terrain done? With more stuff on the table you can actually have games.

    Now help for sleep

Now,against sleep.. and seemingly historic that might get @lloyd working on his Slavs

    Now, just good time music

@templar007  Removing those things from history books or history books them selves that’s dangerous. People need to be educated on what happened. History lessons are often enough one sided as is so watering it down more is really making way for false information.

Whatever I use I don’t want to have to ‘explain’ to people that that is the German Navy, it should be easy to identify.

I think, and don’t hold me accountable on that, the Kriegsmarine had it’s own flags and signage in addition to the swastika. It’s called the Reichskreigsflagge. Black, white and red stripes with the iron cross on top. Used for “Special occasions”. Also Just a red flag with a white dot in the middle (basically just leaving off the swastika) will get the point across I reckon.

@horati0nosebl0wer  technically I have solo games. Frostgrave does have a solo mode IIRC. Don’t quote me on that. Also Imperial Assault with the game app (though that’s more boardgame)

    It’s Monday moaning… hello world.

@sundancer I’ll look into the Reichskreigsflagge.  Thanks!

I have also played a bit with some alt flags that don’t include the twisted cross.

I want to use something that is close but not crossing the line.  But I also don’t want to use anything that is too close to the modern German flags as the two should be kept completely separate.  IMHO

Thanks again to the community for any help on this subject. ??

My only pledge is to write more for my current RPG campaign which is the only one I’ll fulfill.

My birthday ritual for the day depends on what’s going on that day… but I do always make sure I take annual leave for the week in which my birthday falls.

I like beer/lager/stout and what I drink depends on my tastebuds at the time… Madri, Grolsch, San Miguel, Guinness… etc…

When I eat outside my usual method of cooking is to buy a takeaway… there’s nothing quite like fighting off gulls while sitting on the beach eating chips from a sheet of paper 🙂

This day is one of the worst in recent memory.

Got up way earlier than usual for some hardware maintenance. Had to bring daughters bike to a repair shop. Clutch of my car is starting to act up badly all the sudden and needs some TLC (aka an expensive visit to the garage) and I really am full out of energy in every respect of the meaning.

Is this a late midlife crisis? Or am I just tired? I don’t know but I feel like I could sleep for days.

Anyhow. Work still needs to be done.

See you again tomorrow I think.

Hang in there @sundancer these events are just checkpoints to let you know life has surprises still in-store for you.

As to ‘midlife crisis’,  it’s probably not that – – unless you have the urge to buy a two seat sports car way out of your normal budget.  Followed by planning to swim with sharks or skydive, or change careers to something you don’t really have the training for but have secretly always wanted to do! (also, there’s nothing wrong with any of that if planned out). ??

    Deep breath……………..and you’ll be fine!

buying *any* car is way out of budget right now. Even used old bangers. That’s the main problem right there.

Breathing. Good advice. Will try that… unless someone comes around the corner with some comment like “just buy a new car”.

Yes, had that one being said to me today. There almost was blood. If he had been here and not “somewhere on the interwebs”

Oh bugger! Only last week I thought it might be interesting to throw myself out of a plane with a parachute on my back…

However… if I bought a 2 seat sports car I’d have to learn to drive.

Maybe a dual processor PC is more my style 🙂
