### Start of shameless copy and paste ###
First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…
https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/
https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/
Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.
First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.
You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.
If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.
A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil.
Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.
Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)
And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is the unofficial Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv
### End of shameless copy and paste ###
Questions:
- You’re at home and the internet has gone the way of the dodo. How do you tend to your hobby cravings? how do you get your fix?
- Is there any hobby related paper magazine you still buy and read on a regular basis?
- How long would the internet outage be to make you go out and buy hobby related paper magazines again?
And now back to the show.
August 19, 2022 at 6:42 am #1771203PLEDGE:
Paint more Wiz0rds! Progress so far:

Answers:
- I’d be way to often on the phone to yell at my IPS to even care about hobby… at least at first.
- Nope. Nothing really comes to mind. I’m not even sure there are any magazines readily available here except for White Dwarf.
- Not daring to think so far ahead.
Now more coffee.
August 19, 2022 at 11:17 am #1771271Happy Friday.
I haven’t painted for most of this week, but I have been sorting through my terrain collection. So my pledge is finish doing that and then go back to painting.
Also Saturday evening we’ll be playing a small game of 40k. We’re trying out their recommended table size and it seems very small, but I guess we’ll see.
You’re at home and the internet has gone the way of the dodo. How do you tend to your hobby cravings? how do you get your fix?
I’d probably go to one of my hobby books or read a novel, or even paint.
Is there any hobby related paper magazine you still buy and read on a regular basis?
Not on a regular basis but I often see what’s in Wargames Illustrated and if there’s enough in a particular issue for me I’ll get it. Maybe only one or two issues a year though.
How long would the internet outage be to make you go out and buy hobby related paper magazines again?
If the internet was out for that long a time, getting printed magazines would be the last thing on my mind.
I’ve just recently got home and I missed a delivery. I’m thinking it’s maybe something from Northern Ireland. Guess I’ll find out tomorrow when I go and pick it up.
August 19, 2022 at 12:59 pm #1771307If the internet has gone… I’d spend less time in forums and shopping online…
I used to buy Dragon and Dungeon every month when they were in paper and have loads of them boxed away… ready for whenever I need something. I do buy a couple of issue of WD most years, but usually regret it afterwards when I realise that it’s just a magazine full of pictures that make my miniatures look awful.
I’d have to get pretty desperate to go out looking for a magazine… wargaming and WD are about it for paper magazines as far as I know… but as stated above… I have my paper archive.

I’ll be continuing to work on my ‘Marvel Crisis Protocol’ game tiles and also working on a jig for routering Acrylic into what is called ‘stadium’ shapes to use as clear bases for my ‘Black Seas’ ships.

How long would the internet outage be to make you go out and buy hobby related paper magazines again?Answer: I still get ‘WARGAMES illustrated’ and ‘WHITE DWARF’. Plus I always buy paper style rulebooks. I’d hate to see the Internet go down, but if it did I’d continue on. I would definitely miss seeing what my brothers and sister across the great pond are doing. But I would not go bonkers. (after all, I did survive in the age before internet) (but I was much lonelier)
Here is to the Internet keeping us all connected! ??
August 19, 2022 at 9:26 pm #1771417Uh I somehow missed it, there is a new edition of HeroHammer! Issue 03.
https://herohammer-fanzine.com/
Already printed and ready to read 😉
August 20, 2022 at 12:40 am #1771432I get my hobby fix by setting up my phone, streaming what music I have onto some portable speakers and do whatever I feel I can in scratching that itch.
I have no regular print subscription as I’m too mobile to have mail be shipped and expect to arrive where I might well be. I do happen to catch Damaged and Amazing Figure Modeler but only purchase at a local store when the issue is really interesting. Minis are so much cheaper than quality garage kits and less intimidating in scale to paint.
The Internet needs to be out for that? I think that if the info was good and the publication had helpful info or cool photos ot wouldn’t matter. I’ve seen quite a bot of both in Damaged that is great for weathering. By the by @sundancer you should look into it as there’s been an awful lot of Star Wars model work done and shown, even in step by step detail to achieve effects.
Pledge – (not just for gloss hardcoat finishing models before a matt varnish) – complete one figure before the next thread
As I just got laid off today I think I might well be able to complete that 4pt Anglo-Dane starter box for Saga from Gripping Beast. It also helps as I just got my shield transfers. I could even finish out the Viking starter box, the two sacred ground markers and make some headway into a frost giant I have on the side as a monster.
Needless to say I’m coping with this as best I can in doing some heavyweight hobbying…. which reminds me I have a few other projects that could well get some attention. Going out for a walk to ger out of the house might well be in order as well. Vitamin D, dopamine and serotonin all getting dealt with.
@zorg That is not the signal we were looking for. First we’d need tech support from Drkadrkastan to connect and relay our message (in whatever far flung corner of thw globe it might be
@templar007 I look forward to seeing those bases. It sounds like an effort that will be quite impressive when all is said and done. As far as The Age Before of the Long Long Ago I agree that things were more solitary. You actually had to remember telephone numbers as well and could only find warehouses of minis in lieu of FLGS (atleast as I’ve experienced).
August 20, 2022 at 9:56 am #1771434I have a huge pile of shame to paint, a ton of papercraft to assemble, games and mini’s still in shrinkwrap, and a harddrive full of PDF’s I haven’t read yet. Gee, I wonder. 😀
Stopped reading hobby magazines when I found it was easier to argue on the internet. 😛
August 20, 2022 at 10:17 am #1771435@horati0nosebl0wer So “Damaged” and “Amazing Figure Modeler”are magazines I guess. Need to look them up to see if they are published here at all. Sorry to hear about you’ve being laid of :S
@ced1106 yeah but the internet is down. So now what?! 🙂
August 20, 2022 at 10:53 am #1771437Lol you just can’t fix stupid sometime’s even if you show them the evidence they are wrong @ced1106.
August 20, 2022 at 4:41 pm #17715311) You’re at home and the internet has gone the way of the dodo. How do you tend to your hobby cravings? how do you get your fix?
No Internet ?
Heresy …2) Is there any hobby related paper magazine you still buy and read on a regular basis?
Nope.
I used to buy White Dwarf on a semi-regular basis but I’ve noticed that most articles are more as an ad for whatever game GW is releasing next or as a way to get people to buy the magazine …Plans for this week include dealing with my dad’s funeral and maybe find time to build that ancient Landraider kit.
I miss the golden era of WD when they would have more hobby related stuff and feature things that weren’t 40k or AoS.3) How long would the internet outage be to make you go out and buy hobby related paper magazines again?
I’d buy a good quality hobby related paper magazine in a heartbeat even if there’s a functioning internet.
I’ve tried cutting screens, but that shit gets expensive and rarely keeps the colours of the original image….Magazines that were good, but have gone the way of the dodo :
= Challenge ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challenge_(game_magazine) )
I’ve only ever managed to buy a few copies at random when I found them at the not so local gaming shop I used to go to (this was pre-internet).= Dragon / Dungeon by TSR/Wizards of the Coast.
Used to be fun to read short articles on new things for D&D
The cover art (by Elmore and co) was amazing.
It’s a shame the thing went digital only, but given the cost and world wide distribution challenges it is kind of understandable.= White Wolf Inphobia (White Wolf)
A short lived magazine for anything White Wolf related. Like Challenge this was a rare/random treasure.
https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/198468?affiliate_id=13&src=WWWiki= Arcane (Future Publishing)
A short lived British tabletop/rpg focused magazine. I liked it, but I think it was doomed as internet had pretty much replaced paper magazines. The only paper magazine I still get is the one that is used as a newsletter for the DuCoSim (a Dutch tabletop gaming club).
It’s nice to read when there is nothing to do and it does have a bit more local tabletop/gaming news, but like many hobby things the internet has replaced it as a source of actual news.August 20, 2022 at 9:58 pm #1771605August 20, 2022 at 11:18 pm #1771611August 21, 2022 at 10:35 am #1771637 -
