    ### Start of shameless copy & paste ###

Read all of this before you start as it will save any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is the unofficial Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

    ### End of shameless copy & paste ###

    Questions of the week:

    • With GenCon Online 2020 being a thing: have you watched any of it and was there any exciting news for you?
    • Will you be attending other online conventions later this year? If yes, which one?
    • What would be the ideal stream for you?

    Now of to the races!

    Answers!

    • Watched some streams (Mainly FFG) and really new stuff wasn’t there.. maybe the hint of a possible maybe new miniatures games in the LotR universe…
    • UKGE and Spiel are planned.
    • Haven a competent presenter/host and a “guest” who talks about the product and doesn’t goes of every three seconds. (Looking at you X-Wing FFG Stream) Also, all the um, om and urrs…. Jebus! (Looking at you again FFG). The Armada stream was more competent but the host still was… meh.

Oh no! I suddenly realised something! If none of the OTT Team is going to any conventions…. they won’t be able to make them give away freebies! OH NOES! XD

[Yes that’s a c&p from discord but this waaaay to important ;)]

ah … I thought something was off yesterday when the official Weekender post happened before the Weekender forum thread.

Then again … after that FFG stream I can understand.
That’s the sort of thing you expect from amateurs who don’t need to promote a product.

    1) With GenCon Online 2020 being a thing: have you watched any of it and was there any exciting news for you?
I didn’t even realise they were doing an on-line thing and when I found the stream it said something about needing tickets.
    Confusing at best …

    2) Will you be attending other online conventions later this year? If yes, which one?
The virtual OTT Hobby weekends were fun, but I can’t see myself wanting to join any virtualized conventions.
Part of the appeal of GenCon was seeing the terrain and demo games.
The lack of physical presence means these will be glorified advertisements, because they will lack that certain something you can only get when real people interact with designers/developers.

    3) What would be the ideal stream for you?
Short, to the point … and with presenters who are having fun doing their assigned job.
The GW livestreams when they announced/revealed stuff were great.

They didn’t talk needlessly about boring details that were not part of the thing they were introducing.
I think they were more or less the same as they would have done live at a convention …

I don’t know how FFG prepared for that stream, because it looked like something they sort of forgot about until it was time to begin.

Hobby wise … I’ve got a kickstarter incoming. Battlesystems Fantasy if I read the signs correctly.
Because although the tracking mail said stuff was heading my way it didn’t mention what it was, so I had to guess based on magic numbers.

I will be trying to get these damn berserkers finished… They’ve been annoying me somewhat, and I am just not feeling too energetic or inspired, of late. Annoyingly, two of the remaining guys just don’t want to matte down, regardless of the coats of medium I put on…I am confused with the whole thing, to be honest. I’m beginning to suspect that the indoor conditions here are just messing with my paints…I hate living in a swamp…

As for questions, I’ll probably disappoint you, but I don’t really get that into conventions much. I sort of blame the GW spamming of new things that I just kind of got sick of. These days I’d rather get my ‘what’s coming soon’ news from places like OTT because I can just have a look at something that catches my eye. The only stream I regularly watch live is actually the Hobby Hangout, though I do enjoy watching the Tom and Ben Warhammer streams from The Yogscast. They are fun to leave in the background and paint to.

In ancient times a convention was the only place to get any info on new things.
These days there is no need to wait for a big convention to do so.
In fact … by spreading the news across the year there is a much higher chance of being seen as the information overload during conventions is a real problem.

I think it is why things like the E3 were on life support *before* the Event ™.
The conventions that do survive all of this are likely to re-focus on the social aspect of gaming.
Forget about telling people about ‘the latest’, because chances are we’ve seen it already thanks to websites like OTT or the official company news.

I’ve noticed that some companies have managed to embrace the move to the digital realm.
The Event (stay indoors!) probably accelerated any plans they had.
Others look like they were caught off guard (*ahem* FFG and their stream of death)

Still going to be chugging along with the Black Watch. Hopefully that’s the last time of repeating that week on week, as it looks like I might be able to squeeze in a couple of longer paint sessions midweek, so they should be finished before next weekend.

    Questions:

    1. Haven’t watched any of GenCon, and unlikely to do so either. Same as any other year, I pick up snippets of news about releases from websites like OTT. Nothing has got me really excited, but intrigued whether FFG are going to try a Middle Earth wargame.

    2. Not planning on attending any online cons at all. Viewing it all remotely misses half the point – I want to enjoy meeting people at the event, seeing things physically etc.

    3. I don’t really watch streams, and if I do, it tends not to be live. I think what makes a good stream is the same as watching live sport. Your presenters need to be personable, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their subject. If they aren’t, then they’ll struggle to engage with the audience.

This week’s pledge is to finish assembling the Kingdom Death minis from the core game (I currently have 16 left to build) then get them all 36 undercoated. Then I’ll move on to painting whatever takes my fancy.

    1. With GenCon Online 2020 being a thing: have you watched any of it and was there any exciting news for you? – I haven’t really got into watching announcement streams. Happy to read the summary article on OTT or watch the news segment of the weekender.
    2. Will you be attending other online conventions later this year? If yes, which one? – Same as above.
    3. What would be the ideal stream for you? – honestly they don’t interest me.

Pledge… as inspired by the XLBS – It’s not just for cleaning my wood!

Realistically though I’ll be doing more commission stuff and then maybe to my own stuff… the shock of it!

GenCon 2020 Online… all the forced first person perspective and none of the gamer funk or hacking crud. I’ve watched none of them. I’ve had my head buried in getting commission painting work done and going about life around me as best I can with the small amount of in person socializing I can.

No online conventions for me. If I’m going to be dropping myself in front of a screen for more time than is healthy it is for either gaming or salacious viewing.

I don’t think there’s really an ideal stream. Perhaps something I do have an odd idea for in being interactive theater/film. I guess in a roundabout way that niche is already taken by Twitch thots and game streamers but it really lacks the engagement of high production value. If you go all esoteric and philosphical with semiotics, where really is the division of experience to the individual?

@limburger Agreed on the advertising without physical presence. I think that the budget for online cons will be where some companies will drop their cash. There’s no overhead in lugging product to a site (and back if sales are flat). Compared to big videogaming and anime conventions tabletop is a different animal but there is quite a bit put into the physical showcasing. Will booths be given less emhasis in future because of The ‘Rona and physical health when cons come back?

@crazyredcoat I’d say that this end of the world I’m in would likely be willing to accept you should you choose to live in what’s best termed a high desert. I do understand the issues with humidity though when paint decides to do what it does without your input (though drying retarder can be my friend).

@scribbs I fully agree on the social aspect. You can’t have the random encouters that make them fun. I’ve enjoyed attending panels at specific times but I don’t think that there’s any fun that you might have in front of a camera for a stream that you get from a packed hall where the crowd is as much a performer for the panelists.

@danlee I’m glad somebody is getting around to KD models. I’ve been sitting on mine way too long. They’re probably in line to be worked on before I jump into the order I had delivered from the Hot&Dangerous Kickstarter. So many minis, so little time. That’s it.. time to kick into higher gear and lower the bar for quality for quantity as was done with T-34s.

@horati0nosebl0wer Honestly, I’d happily be in the highest of deserts right now; a holiday to Antarctica or the Arctic sounds fantastic!

I managed to get paint to plastic, after a fairly long break of just not having the energy. Not much, but I’m on to highlights next. Some of the minis are still quite shiny…not happy with that…

Well I managed to sit down and get a solid six hours of hobby in yesterday. Something I have not been able to do for at least six months with the kids constantly underfoot. I managed to finish assembling all the survivor models for Kindom Death and then this morning I got them undercoated.

@horati0nosebl0wer the kits are very versatile but if you want them to be WYSIWYG you might be better off just doing the starting survivors and then making the models up as you play the game. Then you can equip them as they are in your play through. Having played through the game once I was confident enough to equip them with the weapons I would give them on a second play through. The only trap I fell into is that each sprue has enough parts to build four survivors, except the lion armour set which can build five. So I built five and then when I go to the last sprue found I was one base short, so I was only able to build three phoenix armour survivors. It irritated me for a while until I realised you can only ever have three survivors of each armour set in the game anyway.
