Another weekend down and another pledge complete. The Romans were done and I finished the monks/cultists yesterday evening.
Also I won the game of SPQR by successfully defending the farm animals from the rampaging Greeks. As my opponent is part New Zealander there were a few sheep jokes.
Not sure what to paint next. I have quite a few models ready to start on so I’ll just pick something that I’m in the mood for.

Tuesday my dudes.

I’ve got to say I find it harder and harder these days to split my mental capacity between (hobby related) YouTube, the forums and discord. There are so many mental threads and tabs open at the same time I just don’t know what to cut. And that is especially true for discord with all the channels and notifications etc.

Do you set yourself limits? Have you enough “spare time” to catch up with all? I’ve got the feeling something is going to give sooner or later. Just because of limitations in my personal space.

Yeah, there can be a lot of stuff wanting our attention.

Every now and then I think long and hard on weather to a pair down on certain social media, going through YouTube subscriptions (and finding channels that have been dead for years) or looking as some of the Facebook communities that I no long interact with. My least favourite is Instagram and I’ve almost closed my account a few times. I really only keep it around as a record of my painting. I get very little interaction with other people, it’s almost just a place to trade and collect likes.

One thing I do to limit noise is to turn off almost all notifications on my phone and tablet. Really I only have email and WhatsApp with notifications turned on (even then they get disabled at night time). Everything else can wait.

That’s another thing. Except some Email accounts, WhatsApp and Signal I only have Instagram as an app on my phone. Everything else is PC only.

When OTT adopted discord I deliberately didn’t get involved. I can’t keep up with that much content. My job doesn’t allow me to be distracted by things like that and when I’m home I have kids to look after. The few hours a day I get would all be wasted if I tried to keep up with that sort of platform. I even stopped using facebook last year as I found I was only wasting time browsing it.

 

I much prefer traditional forums where I can subscribe to the ones that interest me and ignore the rest. I have youtube channels I subscribe to which I watch while eating or painting, but rarely resort to browsing youtube for other videos.

I feel you very much. Especially on the Facepage side of things.

I must admit… sometimes I’m tempted to stomp an unofficial BoW/OTT forum out of the ground 😉 Isn’t that hard…

I’ve set all discord channels to ‘muted’, except for the OTT one. I tend to use it to distract myself from some of the non fun stuff that’s happening in the world.

I don’t have any kind of notifications for the OTT forums either, because I’d rather just browse and checkup on the ones that have interesting stuff to say. And if there isn’t any activity I don’t mind that I forget about them.

I just wished I could easily mute the project notifications themselves, because there are so many that I haven’t read (and are unlikely to look at). Seeing the sign that tells me there’s a few hundred changes I should check is kind of useless (to me), because there’s no way I can keep up with any of them once cleared.

I’m glad that I don’t have any social media worth following, so I can ignore that.
