### Start of shameless copy and paste ###
First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…
https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/
https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/
Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.
First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.
You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.
If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.
A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil.
Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.
Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)
And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is the unofficial Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv
### End of shameless copy and paste ###
Questions:
- Waiting for a new game: is it really worth it?
- What is the longest you’ve ever waited to get your hands on a game?
- What was your biggest let down after a period of waiting in regards of the table top hobby?
And now back to the show.
May 20, 2023 at 10:37 am #1818924Pledge: paint more ‘Mechs. Maybe get them all done finally!
Answers:
- generally I do not think the wait is worth it. You concentrate so much on future stuff that you loos track of everything you could be playing right now. Remember, most companies don’t sell out in minutes like G’Wullu does but you can order at any time once it’s released. Enjoy the here and now. Yes, planning for something new is good but don’t overdo it.
- People will be going “surely it’s bot wars” but it’s not. When Star Wars: Legion was announced Modiphius announced Fallout: Wasteland Warfare. And it took some years before I got my hand on a copy. A) because Modiphius delayed it again and again and B) I wasn’t so sure if I wanted to shell out full price. But then I found it at a large discount in a FLGS and snagged it up.
- My biggest let down was a Kickstarter (to nobodies surprise). 2D dungeon tiles with non permanent stickers for terrain. The KS dragged on for years before finally getting cancelled. At least I got back half my pledge.
And now back to doing laundry. *sigh*
May 21, 2023 at 12:12 am #1819008Kickstarter. Kickstarter. Kickstarter. But you beat me to it. 😀
Some random article I read said that 40% of small businesses failed because of Covid (supply chain issues). And I’m sure all of them were on KS. 😀 I’m still “waiting” for projects I funded long before Covid. They delivered on their earlier projects, then the project flatlined during the pandemic.
Also, even before the pandemic, I have games that will take me *years* to get around to, not to mention miniatures to paint. So, not waiting for anything. Currently painting and prepping for another campaign of “Five Leagues from the Borderlands” after quitting the current campaign (going to try a more munchkin party!).
May 21, 2023 at 4:03 am #1819036- Waiting for a new game: is it really worth it?
No. I don’t do that, either I buy it or I don’t. I had games I bought in at release, and I had Games where I waited years to buy in.
- What is the longest you’ve ever waited to get your hands on a game?
I bought Infinity 2005 at the Spiel, tried to build the minis way back then, and then did not touch the game again until 2019
- What was your biggest let down after a period of waiting in regards of the table top hobby?
Kickstarter I guess. I bought into Reichbusters, even back then delivery was already a Clusterf..k, however the game itself is just some rules thrown together without any coherent connection between them.
May 21, 2023 at 9:59 am #1819065Problem with waiting for a new game to arrive is the anticipation fades according to the inverse square law… and with kickstarter and inevitable delays I’ve usually lost interest by the time it arrives.
Longest I probably waited is around two years… kickstarter! Mythic Games, Modiphius, Monolith, Cmon, Flying Frog, Grimlord Games… all guilty of massive delays.
Biggest disappointment is the rules for kickstarter projects are usually so bad that I feel like a beta tester, not a customer. And when the release it later with an ‘Upgrade Kit’ or ‘Rules 1.5’ I feel like I’ve been ripped off.
In short… unless it’s something with a 3 to 6 month deliver window (which is pretty much just Crooked Dice…) I tend to avoid kickstarter for the delays.
Longest wait now is usually a preorder window for something I want and only if it’s month away at most.
May 21, 2023 at 1:01 pm #1819076Good Sunday morning!
Kickstarter. Kickstarter. Kickstarter. But you beat me to it.
I smell a trend here XD @ced1106
Kickstarter I guess.
Smelling more then just a trend @storminwolf
Longest I probably waited is around two years… kickstarter!
And trend confirmed by @pagan8th
I think it safe to say at this point that crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter and Gamefound are both a blessing and a curse.
Problem with waiting for a new game to arrive is the anticipation fades according to the inverse square law… and with kickstarter and inevitable delays I’ve usually lost interest by the time it arrives.
Exactly. We (the hobbyists) are so easily caught with the shiny new that we often forget what we already backed.
Speaking of ageing (the threads topic): It’s 5 years not that the current iteration of BoW/OTT exists!
Happy birthday @warzan @lloyd @brennon @avernos @johnlyons @dignity @tgu3 and all the rest!
Now I will go and watch some XLBS.
May 23, 2023 at 7:52 am #1819506And just like that it’s Tuesday and I completely missed Monday here. But then again, I did manage to put paint on some more ‘Mechs.
I was watching (more listening) to the Painting Phase podcast. And that’s a mistake. Never pain delicate details when you could be bursting out laughing at any point in time. Bloody hell! And it had to be when I was painting red on white.
May 23, 2023 at 8:11 pm #1819773I tried posting in the thread earlier this week but for some reason my text could only be white on a white background and I couldn’t change it.
Anyway… this weeks pledge was this guy: https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1794968/
- Waiting for a new game: is it really worth it? – I tend to back kickstarters and then not pay much attention to when they’re coming. I don’t do much waiting.
- What is the longest you’ve ever waited to get your hands on a game? – 2-3 years I guess. Again not paying much attention.
- What was your biggest let down after a period of waiting in regards of the table top hobby? – None have really let me down.

Can you still see me?
Dang it. I just wanted to upgrade a NIC on my firewall and ended up cleaning it. I totally forgot how easily dust accumulates in a system when you don’t have carpet in a room to collect said dust and you also never do maintenance on your firewall.
Jeebus was that caked on there. But now CPU temps are 10°C colder then before. Also my Internet now goes at 100% speed.
Sadly that has no effect of the responsiveness of “some sites”. *cough* OTT *cough*
Long night. Now coffee.
May 25, 2023 at 4:06 pm #1820199There are some things you should just leave alone. I treat the dust caked around my router and nas as the security tripwire that they are: as long as there’s an unbroken film of furry grey dust on them, I know that nobody has messed about with them so they should just work!
Can’t believe we’re on Thursday already.
I’ve done exactly zero hobby this week. Not even sure I’ve joined in on this week’s thread.
It feels like it’s probably a bit late now. I’ll give it ’til the weekend and get in early on the next one 😉May 26, 2023 at 6:08 am #1820244It feels like it’s probably a bit late now.
It’s never to late!
I know that nobody has messed about with them so they should just work!
Until the heat kills them. Since summer is getting hotter and hotter, maintenance is getting more important.
Friday my friends. And I got to play another game of BT yesterday. Almost managed not to get blown up XD
Need even more coffee now.
