Good morning Punyverse…how are you today? Well, if you have survived the weather this week then see if you can muster the strength to survive this. There have been mutterings about how the standards have fallen. Words have been uttered about “the good old days” and that things were more ‘involved’ back then. So, is this how it is to be?

Anyway, read all of this rubbish before you decide to take part. That way there will be no unpleasentness later on. If you think this is not for you then that is fine. The dress suits you and you don’t know what you are missing. For everyone else just come this way.

First you must “pledge”. Anything hobby related will do. Finish that vehicle off, paint it and play a game. If you have a bit less time then just have a fiddle. It is not about how much you can do, but it more about absorbing the culture. I used to say that “happiness is the road” and I still think it is a good guide. Just have fun and go with it.

Just a very small thing: no pledge = no play!

Your hard work should be accompanied by pictures. No excuses – everyone has phone, even me. It should go without saying that you will get hints, tips, advice, abuse, and general threats. Don’t worry it is all character building.

There are questions too. These are intended to get the conversation flowing. Tell us things about you, show us some pictures and tell us a story. We can all get to know each a bit better and that is the whole point. No text speak either and the use of “basically” is totally banned. Real conversation only.

    1. What happened? I saw a news item from a US court where a former judge was sentenced to 6 months in the jail for something she was sentenced to previously. Women in the gallery started acting like fools and the defendent had to be dragged from the court room when she pretended to faint. What happened to people over the last few years?

    2. Tell us the high point of your week. What did you do that made you feel it was all worth it?

    3. I guess that, like myself, you lot have an eye for detail. You notice things that the lower orders wouldn’t notice even if pointed out. What details always catch your eye?

    4. Is there an aspect of ‘gaming’ that you just can’t get away with? Is there something that you just won’t/can’t do?

This is a friendly place, but it is no ‘safe space’. No SJW, soy-boy, snowflake hee-haw allowed under any circumstances. Gross. A few bumps and scrapes never did any harm. Remember the philosophy of Capt. Lance Murdock – bruises fade, bones heal, and chicks dig scars. However, this does not mean you can behave like a lout. It is expected you behave like you are having tea with my grandparents! Like a gentleman.

We also practice Scottish pub law here. No Politics & No Religion. This does not mean that you cannot mention such topics if you are trying to make a better point. You know what I mean, but don’t take the piss. Feel free to discuss or tell us anything. Boast, brag, and show-off as much as you like. It is encouraged in here.

All of the ‘rules’ are flexible except this one: NO DICKS! Firms.

Make sure your work is inspired by only the best sounds possible. Make us a playlist. Discovering new music is always an excellent experience. I love it. It should be loud, no headphones, and no wussy crap either.

Right, is that as clear as mud? Begin.

I’m actually a bit of a feminist, am I allowed?

    Pledge
By end of play on the 31st July, I need to have my Pak 40s and 5 Panzer IV painted for the OTT/FOW Slow Grow League thing.  Also would like to get more of my tiny fighty men painted and based in between painting camo and sticking grass to bases.

    1. Is this a question on double jeopardy or the way people behave?  No clue if it is the former, but for the latter, people have always had unpleasant traits, and behaved in ways I would not approve of, but I just think the internet means we hear about it more.  And unless you are hurting me or others, then do what you like – freedom has always come with responsibility – perhaps some people have forgotten the responsibility bit in the recent past.

    2. The high point of this week was the potato salad I made for tea last night.  I currently lead a simple life but it was bloody good and I grew the herbs I put in it myself.  Certainly helped the other green stuff on my plate go down easier (and, no, not the modelling putty!)

    3. Weird posing on models and shit chainmail.  I have ruined so many models for myself by thinking, that doesn’t look right.    This one from Gripping Beast I saw yesterday is just all wrong, but the chainmail is awesome. – https://www.beastsofwar.com/news/gripping-beast-next-viking-age-legendary-hero/  The latest Victrix Vikings have honeycomb for chainmail and people are getting major hard ons over them, I don’t get it, but each to their own.  I will point it out though – Victrix Vikings have terrible chainmail and only bees should appreciate the way it sculpted.

    4. I couldn’t play a game or even paint models relating to the Troubles in Northern Ireland.  Too many school friends lost fathers in that and I couldn’t roll dice when I have seen what they went through.  Other conflicts don’t bother me in the same way.  It is the closeness of it all.  A childhood of soldiers on the streets and thinking it is normal for your parents to check underneath their car every morning is so weird when you think back to it.  Of course, if people want to play those games, go for it, I’m not going to get offended or try and stop you.  I’m very “laissez faire” when it comes to things, though laissez faire is perhaps not the correct term to use but I can’t think of a better way to describe how I think at the moment.

Also I hate aerosol sprays – so I rarely use them for undercoating or varnishing (can’t remember the last time I did).  The only spray can I ever use when hobbying is hairspray.  So that is also something I won’t do but it isn’t really related to the question but thought I would mention it.

Anyway, that was a bit deeper than I meant it to be for a Friday morning so some tunes to lift the mood.

    All hail the Messiah Marcolin!

@robert – you can’t be a feminist…you are male! Your pledge has 5 days – do you think you will have enough time?

    1. I was more leaning towards how come people are so weak and are unable to cope with anything. Where does this behaviour come from? How does it even become normal. I have seen some pretty nasty things that ‘people’ have done and I also know what people are capable of in extreme situations. This isn’t anything like that.

No “nature vs. nurture” moaning either!

    2. I do like a bit of PS. 100pts. Bit of black pepper and a fine cut of Onion. I am hungry now, you fiend! Hope you are pleased with yourself? 30pts.

I am a complete monster for Coldslaw. I hope the other “green stuff” wasn’t a portion of the Devil’s Cabbage? Maybe you just don’t remember…

    3. I suppose it is because of the way things ‘hang’. I have seen some really terrible cloaks too. I meant any detail. I notice hands. Noses too. I love a straight nose and philtrum. No woman can resist the story of how that is made.

    4. I am not sure that would be good wargaming! It isn’t really a war. I suppose my view is the opposite of yours (on the subject), but that could be the case with almost everything. 20pts.

You don’t like spray paint? I have never heard that from anyone before. They do smell a bit! Airbrush rules. 50pts. The one thing about spray cans is that when I shake one all the cats scatter like it was something I was going to use on them.

As for the ‘hairspray’ thing for weathering, I have still not tried it. However, I will do it over the weekend for all to see. Bet I make an arse of it!

Candlemass – a bit tame for my taste! Just kidding. 30pts. Derek used to listed to ‘Stormtroopers of Death’. I have not done any music yet…I am just listening to a JW documentary and it is almost finished. The mooziks. On the subject of moozik I have just got three tickets to see Babymetal up the Barrowlands in 2020. Tasty stuff.

    There you go…perfect start.

I question your logic of making title of this thread politically charged while wanting thread itself to follow “no politics, no religion”-rule but then again I don’t have horse in the race so to speak. But here goes.

I have my ongoing Death Guard project. I bought myself Chaos Defiler to go with my 2 Plagueburst Crawlers. After I am done with it and new SoB models and new codex are released I will start them as my next army.

    1. Some people just are like that. It has nothing to do with anything else than them being unpleasant people.

    2. High point of my week was when my copy of Sabaton’s new album The Great War arrived and I got to listen it over and over again.

    3. Funny enough while I have some eye for detail it’s not in this hobby but in other things like how damaged or undamaged something is.

    4. I don’t do historical or modern but if I did I would say that recent conflicts are something that I wouldn’t touch. So nothing newer than Desert Storm and nothing that is still going on.

No politics rule and then you start this soy boy SJW snowflake rubbish? If that isn’t political, what is? I guess Ayn Randian neo-Nazi right wing nut job is equally non-political?

On Frothers I’d tell you what I really think. On TMP you’d fit right in.

    Shame. I really liked BoW.

Kusrau, how would this affect your like/dislike of OTT?  I’m curious.  Personally I try to treat things individually rather than in groups.  The folks at OTT don’t subscribe to the views and opinions of every poster on this site I doubt so I would be hesitant to paint them in any kind of light.  I would suggest just letting UncleJimmy’s comments stand for UncleJimmy.

    Good Morning All!

It’s been a busy week, but with very little accomplished on any front. How does that happen? I’m trying to get my Teacher English Second Language certificate (TESL) but it’s a daunting process trying to get registered for the online courses. The University of Winnipeg runs like a Third World country or an Italian railway these days; I can’t understand anyone in the English Department anymore when I call down there, and no one knows anything. I’m still waiting on an academic reference (I wonder if the foreign students need one). I don’t dare go down there, as I’ll have to navigate Pride rainbow hallways and lie-ins in remembrance of one massacre or another. I often catch myself looking for a high feature with good fields of fire. ‘Nuff said.

Pledge: I’m going to try and finish building my five extra starship crewmen, and get more work done on my battle boards. The river boards are finished and delivered, along with two of six flat boards. I’ve managed to do some upgrading on mini’s that will be used in a baptismal ruck at my LGS. That work will continue. I may get some of it done at an anime convention I’m teaching at on Sunday.

    1. What’s wrong with people? See opening paragraph. To wit, I have no idea when or how it all went off the rails.

    2. High Point? My lawyer conquered Veterans Affairs and got them to stop garnishing my disability checks for money I don’t owe them.

    3. Details that catch my eye? I’m always looking for faults on my gaming tables, be it the mini’s or the terrain. A good table, like a good book, should suspend disbelief. One day someone brought their own mini, an unpainted piece of crap, and dropped it in the middle of my painfully detailed dungeon scene. I almost had a shit hemorrhage. I’m funny that way.

    4. I can’t get into any of the newer dumbed down games. I prefer realism over playabiltity, so always go back to my old ways: Traveller and 1st Edition AD&D and Battlesystem.

At work, so no chance to pilfer songs from Youtube. I’ll post some later in the day or tomorrow morning. I’ve had Eric Clapton’s ‘Cocaine’ running through my head since it came on the radio during my commute.

Cpauls1,  On your comment about AD&D.  Have you looked at any of the newer OSR type games that give you the feel of the older games yet are better organized and presented?  Adventurer Conqueror King comes to mind, I love that.

I agree with you on complexity and options over streamline.  Thats why I love GURPS!

I agree with @jacook people speak for themselves. Also the Anarchist Jew Ayn Rand wasn’t any kind of Nazi. She was a lot of things but not a Nazi or Fascist her entire philosophy is diametrically opposed to the fundamental Fascist “For the Good of the State” Core Mandate. That’s not a political comment just a Historical One.

Have to agree with the others though no politics means no politics.

    As for the questions.

    1. Did an enormous clean out and moved my entire DONGA around. On the topic of Courtroom behaviour I was sent this classic video by a friend, I’ve been watching this for 10 years now and it always makes me laugh especially as a Law Student. Quick Bio the guy “Mr. Gaines” is HIV Positive and spat on a Prison Screw (Australian Slang for a Guard) but this case was very dirty, the judge blogged about it and it ended up being a scandal but for us it’s some great humor. I’m not a lawyer yet but I imagine that when your client is calling a Prosecutor a B**ch and telling him to F**k off the case is basically over.

“You ain’t gotta scream at me b**ch you just a b**ch in a robe” always cracks me up. That and his Public Defender slowly backing away.

    2. Uni started again this week and I won a game against @oriskany at the start of the week which doesn’t happen very often.

    3. As a ten year Rhee Tae Kwon Do member (quit a few years ago) and a Black belt I can spot fake/bad martial arts like a hawk. I was basically the Sergeant of two local branches assisting the instructor for more than four years and my job was to stand to the side and correct people. No competitions, non contact (at least for everyone but Black Belts but even then no pads just common sense) no tournaments just military style Tae Kwon Do run by a Former Marine Instructor and one of the original 12 Masters of Tae Kwon do Master Chong Chul Rhee (who oversaw and approved my promotion to Black Belt). There was nothing we Black Belts like better than getting people ready for their own Black Belt Grading tests. That being said more than one guy on a power trip got a nice touch up by some of those people going for a Black Belt.

    4. I have never found a spray varnish that didn’t ruin minis. They always frost up on me and I also have horrendous luck with pretty much any non-GW Spray Undercoat.

Still more progress on my Paras to have 1000 Points done by the end of the month so that’s my pledge.

@mecha82 I have to agree. For a thread proclaiming it is “no politics, no religion” it makes a rather political statement by saying “no SJW, no soy boys”.

Soy boy is quite a charged term as it seems to insinuate that gamers who don’t fit a certain mold are not welcome. Heck, if you go by some of what the term “soy boy” is meant to insinuate, those are actually traits that might well describe me.

    https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/soy-boy-insult-what-is-definition-far-right-men-masculinity-women-a8027816.html

It’s also the more disheartening as it is just another sign of normalising behaviour of saying who “real gamers” are and making it more acceptable for attitudes that make this place comfortable for outright Nazis to post saying “Speaking as a Nazi” (see the Blood Culture article for that).

    1. Court rooms are court rooms, part about defining the truth, part performance.

    2. Got the workflow operating to do some high throughput computational materials discovery for nuclear waste encapsulation materials. Oh and finishing painting the Space Hulk terminators with contrast paints. Plus some other stuff I can’t say that is gaming based but under NDA.

    3. Details I spot – wonky dice mechanics where the probabilities make for some weird edge cases.

    4. Just not into historical wargaming.

Music for the weekend? Atari Teenage Riot, Fluke, Orbital.

@robert usually when a man says he’s a feminist he’s trying to get one in the sack. What’s her name? Do you have a pic? 🙂

    My cold potato salad:

    10 medium potatoes
    A dozen eggs
1 cup, more or less, salad dressing
    Medium onion
    ¼ cup whipping cream
    ¼ cup sugar
10 chive stalks, chopped fine… because there has to be something healthy in it
    1 Tbsp. prepared mustard
Bacon bits (optional) … because there’s not enough unhealthy stuff in it already
    Salt/ground pepper to taste
    Paprika

Peel potatoes, cut into bit-sized pieces, boil for 12 minutes with the eggs. While that’s cooking, chop up your onion and put it in a large salad bowl. Drain potatoes, remove eggs, add potatoes to onion when hot to caramelize it. Add all other ingredients, garnish the top with paprika, refrigerate. When cold, eat a healthy portion and wait for your heart to stop.

@jacook Adventurer Conquerer King sounds like it’s worth a look. Thanks for the info. Do you have a link?

Another reason I stick with AD&D is I can DM it in my sleep. When 2nd Edition came out it was an entirely different game, and I didn’t feel like investing hundreds of dollars in new books and learning a different system. We just fixed what we thought was broken. There used to be a lot of optional rules in Dragon Magazine that we really liked too.

@unclejimmy Funny… when you say “No SJW” it’s like a call to arms. You’re not allowed to have an opinion unless it’s theirs.

    @elessar2590 What’s a DONGA?

I use Krylon matte sealers and primers. Never had a problem. Can you get them down under?

@cpauls1 see the “What are you painting now thread” as it was recently posted today.

Overall I like them. I have used them on two different primers – the wraithbone GW spray, and the vallejo neutral grey.

So – the science! The really smooth primer surface of the GW sprays are good for the flow, but… means you can get blotchiness unless you are careful. But my Genestealers from the same boxed game are looking good and just need some highlighting now to tidy up the effect.

On the terminators the vallejo grey primer (which is my go to brand of can primer) has ever so slight roughness, a keying. This helps break the surface tension of the contrast so the blotchiness is gone. This does mean you make still need to do edge highlights as the contrast paint doesn’t retract as it would on a smooth surface to leave the natural highlight.

So horses, courses, and lots to play with. As a tool for quick painting? Well it saved my cracking out the airbrush as I normally would. And the tabletop ready look is fine.

I will be next painting the entire Conquest boxed game I have a review copy of.

    edit: termies
