shame there’s not a starter force for one of the italian (non roman) factions would have jumped in with both feet and my wallet open – might still get the book and wait for the starter sets to be made for these maybe..
November 26, 2019 at 5:21 pm #1460220Not easy to do everything at once and deliver on time..
Nevertheless we have the next set of boxes planned.. it is just a question of being able to schedule the production, that is why prior to the KS we did a lot of online surveys to understand where to concentrate the initial effort..
Still, we are not far away… keep an eye on the upcoming updates on the KS..
November 26, 2019 at 9:21 pm #1460249Keep it simple and get those rules done 🙂
I’ve seen too many kickstarters tempted by over stretching themselves during a kickstarter, which resulted in late delivery (at best) or failure (at worst).
November 26, 2019 at 9:57 pm #1460255Yes, don’t worry about that.. our schedule is fixed.. if those other options (other armies) were to open they would have a later delivery date ( April/May maybe ).. our KS is totally streamlined to start shipping in January… we just estimate production batches and orders and we have the first production batch forecasted based on early performance of the KS and is being processed…
We are eager to get the book out there so we will not let other things interfere… we are already working ahead sheduling boxing and shipping…
I have done over 70 KS myself and yes, I have suffer through some tough KS… fortunately dodged the big failures :)…
November 26, 2019 at 10:10 pm #1460270Nice … very nice.
I’m starting to look forward to the things you do after this kickstarter if you’re not careful 😀
November 26, 2019 at 10:26 pm #1460285haha…. yes… we are looking at that as well… we will have a busy year !!
The first thing I want to do once we deal with surveys and stuff and everything is on the move, is a couple of quick instructional videos to teach the core mechanics. The rules are pretty streamlined but they are quite different in a few aspects from other rules and we see how experience wargamers sometimes assume stuff that is different in our game..
So first order of business will be building up the gaming community … especially getting those playtest lists and point system out there for people to start experimenting…
November 27, 2019 at 1:54 am #1460302Well the choice of going with the Punic era for Clash of Spears is the best one. Usually most companies go for early Imperial period armies/rules, but by then it’s just Rome vs the “Barbarians”. The Punic era covers the rise of Rome and the bitter fighting that happened between Rome and it’s competitors. It’s an era that’s colourful, filled with armies that were distinctly different from each other (both in dress and unit makeup/tactics). It’s an era when things could have gone is so many different ways (Rome wasn’t in an “auto-win” situation), with alliances, betrayals, and an amazing amount of political intrigue.
Was very interested to hear how gamers have scaled up the games to 100 figs a side, and how “fake” deployments can scupper the best laid plans (rather than the usual “line em up, and walk directly towards each other that we usually see). I know Victrix already do two bags of Samnites /Oscans (for your Italian tribes) in 24 fig packs at the moment (so you don’t have to buy them in a bag of 60), as well as the “allied” Italian troops (in more Republican Roman Style equipment).
But again steering away from the typical Imperial Roman era trope that we normally see and steering gamers into the REAL period for ancients is a spark of genius (if you’ve never looked at ancient gaming before).
November 27, 2019 at 2:56 pm #1460506Yes it is such a rich period… you can have many different nations…
A key element was develop them fully.. you will see that we have many options for gauls, iberians , italians… they take a prominent place in the book..
In fact if you check the kickstarter updates you can see drafts of the army lists!
And it helped that Victrix already had almost everything we needed ready, I also would like to think that the rules will draw more poeple to ancients and Victrix will benefit from a renewed interest in the period…
As well as Agema Miniatures and Aventine, who also have great minis for that period… even Gripping Beast just recently revived their line that use to be available since the time of Warhammer Fantasy Battles…
November 27, 2019 at 3:08 pm #1460508Also plenty of other lovely one piece metal miniatures out there as well as Gripping Beast Beast like Old Glory,1st Corp,Essex etc
November 27, 2019 at 3:14 pm #1460511By the way.. in this post I comment about the different material we used when researching specific details for CLASH..
In particular we used many issues of Ancient Warfare magazine and the issues related to each army list are listed in the post…
Aaaaand… if you suscribe to the “wargamer subscription”, which includes Ancient Warfare and Wargames Soldiers and Strategy, and you are one of the first 25 to use the coupon CLASH, your first issue is free !
November 27, 2019 at 9:19 pm #1460639@seldon It probably is a given, but is the list of reference material going to be in the book too ?
I like it when game books are a starting point for digging deeper into the background and history.Looking forward to learning stuff 😀
To me it’s the little mechanics like fatigue and the scouting/deployment phase that are lightweight but effective in making players use plausible tactics that drew me into this one.
I do wonder what a fantasy wargame would look like if the designers paid attention to this type of detail.
November 27, 2019 at 9:46 pm #1460648apologies if it sounded negative, i just want my cake and to eat it! haha will jump in with one of the starters and pick up the other ones later
November 28, 2019 at 5:46 pm #1460893Looks an interesting Kickstarter, what’s not to like about Victrix miniatures.
From the sample pages of the rulebook it looks ok, but does seem to fall into the trap of modern wargames rules – thick book, glossy pictures and a lot of faff to describe a rule.
I would rather have liked to see the gameplay videos you spoke about before pledging instead of waiting till after the project closes.
So with those minor issues, I will wait to see it at Salute (might be my shinny syndrome purchase) ? but good luck with your Kickstarter and your future endeavours with this project. ?
