@limburger – I’ve watched all of Rebels and all of Clone Wars, except the new season that has just started on Disney+.
Clone Troopers were programmed to kill Jedi.
During the time of the Empire the Inquisitors and Darth Vader were in charge of hunting down those few Jedi left after Order 66. I don’t know if the Imperial Stormtroopers were programmed in such a away. I don’t think anything much has covered the transition from the Republic to the Empire.
My guesses are that the Clone Troopers were either:
A) short lived as a part of their accelerated growth and whatever natural lifespan of the species they were cloned from – I don’t think Jango Fett was a Mandalorian. Or
B) done away with by the Stormtroopers in a similar way that Hitler got the Black Shirts to kill the Brown Shirts during the Night of the Long Knives.
And the First Order Stormtroopers are different again. I don’t know what indoctrination they had received but it is an interesting point. And I don’t think anyone alive during the Clone Wars would be alive during this time frame. What historical records exist, in whatever form, from that period – anyone’s guess – I haven’t read all of the books. I know Leia was partially ostracised once it got out that she was Vader’s daughter – I have the book, just haven’t got to read it yet.
From memory it is Poe that convinces the Resistance to put some trust in Finn before the destruction of Starkiller Base. And since he was a major player in that, they welcomed him with open arms.
Nothing has been thrown out since Disney said what was in and out of canon.
This group just wanted a place in Star Wars history that no one had covered yet, so that they weren’t going to interfere with the plans of other content (games, TV, movies) producers, and vice versa.
I think they want to leave the Old Republic era for possible future films or streaming series.
Part of what Disney has done is to reserve the right to reuse parts of the EU, hence Thrawn turning up in Rebels and the new book trilogies.
I think a lot of planning has gone into The High Republic, certainly more than what went into the sequel movie trilogy. And more coordination between the writers. If one gets stuck on something they can call on the others for advice. That didn’t seem to happen in the movies.
I live in Dunedin, New Zealand which celebrates Chinese New Year with a fireworks display and other things. Part of our history is a gold rush, which prompted a number of Chinese immigrants to come here. Plus were are so close we get a lot of “investment” from Chinese “companies”. Our tourist industry is quite dependant on people from China.
Certainly we get less British cultural influence now. And Japan is on the rise in the geek youth through Anime and Manga.
Did you like “Rogue One”?
February 28, 2020 at 9:56 am #1491154I suspect the intention here is for it to filter up. MCU is built on comic book source material. Future HR movies can do the same with this. Also, Jane Foster Thor storyline was great (as was pretty much the entirety of Jason Aaron’s time on the comic)
February 28, 2020 at 1:08 pm #1491199@hobbyhub : Rogue One is the only Starwars movie I’ve liked since the original trilogy, but I think it could have been even better without the link to the original trilogy.
The thing with filling in the gaps is that you run into the stuff that happens afterward.
This is why both Solo and the Anakin trilogy were bad ideas. With Anakin you knew he had to become Vader. The movies failed to make that realistic, but the Clonewars cartoons really did a good job at portraying his slow inevitable slide towards the dark side.
Solo was a checklist of the Han Solo character sheet turned into a movie. And seeing that High Republic checklist reminds me of this movie. This was not a story about how Han Solo turned smuggler, but a connect-the-dots writing excercise for kindergarten. (the scene where his ‘name’ is explained is probably the worst one ever)
Going back in time is never a good idea, because you’re going to run into continuety issues (why don’t they mention midichlorians in the classic trilogy ? Obiwan was there when Anakin got ‘tested’ … so why not do it with Luke ?).
Go back far enough … and you might as well write a new IP, because there isn’t anything that connects to the original story.
They lacked the talent to create a good origin story for Vader. Instead we got a whiny youth complaining about sand in his clothes.
They lacked the talent to create a good post classic trilogy story. Instead of seeing the rebellion rise to power we got a recycled female Luke going through the motions to become a hero. I can’t help but wonder if the expanded universe had better stories. Maybe something about Luke teaching new Jedi ? Or the troubles of becoming a new empire while dealing with the remnants of the old one ?
I’m tempted to say that ‘The Mandalorian’ only works is because they’ve taken classic (spaghetti)Western stories about the ‘man with no name’ and set them in the Star Wars universe.
Why look back into the past when you can look toward the future ?
You’d be free of constraints that force you to hook into events later down the line.
You don’t have to worry about who gets the plans for the deathstar and how to get them to Leia … or explain why Vader didn’t stop the rebels before they handed them over to her … -
