What’s your favorite base style ?

I’ve never cared much about base shape or size, but generally, I suppose round, oval, the old school skateboard type or even irregular shaped bases make more sense, and arguably look better for individuals and skirmishers, while square or rectangular make way more sense and are far more practical for rank and file.

If game X requires a special base form (like hex for Battletech) than that’s the base I’m going for. If the mini comes without a base I’ll take what ever I have available

For an individual figure and on purely aesthetic reasons, round. And as low profile as possible. Thin metal washers with a magnet in the hole is the king of bases. Edges neatly painted black, brown or sand coloured.

Rank and flank, I prefer multi-basing, so large rectangles, instead of individually based squares.  Again, low profile material.

Hexes and ovals? Only if the model style (like a ship) or the game mechanics (precise model facing) call for them.

Unusual or irregular shapes? I remember seeing someone make them, in Wargames Illustrated or somewhere. Can be kind of cool, never experimented myself. A bit like how you build bases for terrain, blending it to the table surface.

Favourite base style (although I rarely actually use them myself) are irregular, themed bases.
Then it’s round bases, as low profile as you can get.
I’ve started using 2mm laser-cut clear perspex disks as bases, because I really, really hate basing. This is my second-favourite style of base and my current go-to style for my current minis.
But if I absolutely have to, it’s a round base with a bit of sand/texture and some drybrushing. This is the style of base most common across my miniatures.
I refuse to believe square bases are even a thing now it’s the 21st century 😉

Believe it – the Skaven army I’m currently raising is all square, so are the various Valley of the Four Winds  factions I’m painting, their bases cut individually, by hand, from wood.

Bases I’m not crazy about are those rather large round ones found in Wild West Exodus, Moonstone  or Carnevale, because they make the figure look more like a display piece and not part of their world, especially if you make them a color – such as black – that strongly contrasts with the gaming surface. I get around this by painting/flocking them to look more ‘integrated’.
