GHQ is about $11 USD for a unit of 5 tanks, 28 BMP-1’s will end up costing under $2 CDN in material. Problem is with infantry where there basically just are not many models around and they do not print well with an FDM printer. Aircraft also tend to be very fragile I printer 4 SU-25’s 1 had damaged weapon racks and 1 had a damaged wing tip both from removing support. i have yet to find any helicopters that I can print at 6mm.

May 20, 2019 at 7:35 am #1392533H&R is what i have been looking at instead of GHQ for the infantry since they make the actual weapons for the era, most of GHQ’s stuff is more modern then the Team Yankee Easy German equipment. my estimates so far will be around under $8 to 3d print the vehicle’s and $60 to purchase infantry

I have always been interested in “ultra modern” at various scales and forms since starting. Nowadays most of my stuff is cold war at best!

I’m afraid I don’t have much in the way of “ultra modern,” most of my material personally is 1960-2000 or so.
I have worked up a few 2014-15 Ukraine War counters in an updated Panzer Leader that might have to get some more love soon … 😀

May 27, 2019 at 11:34 pm #1395675First question. I read Horse Soldiers about a year ago and the previous post about using a laser pointer to paint a target reminded me of a section in the book. They had Air Force FACs embedded with the Northern Alliance. When they painted targets hot and high they has misses with the LGBs. I don’t remember if it was addressed in the book but thought others would be interested in the solution, if anyone here knows.
In the book they either painted targets using the ground based lasers only to have them falling off target or were using lasers to provide GPS coordinates passed back to the bombers to set the bomb aim points. This was caused by thermal activity in the canyons distorting accurate lines of sight either on the designators themselves or when using laser rangefinders (I assume with directional input as well) to locate a point using GPS to provide feedback to the bombardiers setting the weapon’s aim points.
I can’t remember if they changed the time of day of the strikes, or the line of sight or what.
May 27, 2019 at 11:39 pm #1395682For rules; i use oscar sierra charlie but modify them go make them easy to teach. I will post a project on a game run recently; approx 20 turns in 4 hours and historical result almost identical to game result.

Last few years before getting out of the hobby almost all my gaming was post war modern air combat. We played at a very high level, Air Superiority by JD Webster. I was in with a select group which meant we were subject to all the latest rules and revisions. Getting back into things I tried to get a handle on what the final rules were but every package I had was labeled latest revision, current copy, etc. with NO DATES! I think they all ended up in the Speed of Heat JD released via Clash of Arms. I live on there as a playtester.
Anyways not content to leave as is I designed up the above flight stands to allow us to position our birds as they would be during that flight phase. This was revision 4 or 5, the threaded rod of one version was a previous incarnation. We played on either blue sheets with iron on hexes or geomorphic enlarged versions of the maps included in the board game.
So if you REALLY want to get a feel of how a well played Sea Harrier can more than hold its own against a flight of Mirages let me know. As an aside I found the YouTube videos of Sharkey Ward’s assessment of how the Sea Harrier, if flown really well, could and should have held the day to be very true to what we found out from JD’s game back in the day.

I am still getting my feet wet and the real hold back is finding like minded gamers, even in a metropolitan area of 5 million. I have to admit Oriskany’s appraisal of Force on Force and our common interest in game scale (company size per player) matches well with mine.
I have to admit lots of my old cold war Soviet stuff is finding new life with my new interest in the Soviet Afghan war, so I have no qualms about when for anything.
May 28, 2019 at 4:08 pm #1395991Interesting anecdote data on the laser designators @madman1960 – delivering misses for LGBs despite successfully painting the target. I honestly don’t know a specific condition that would cause that. Maybe the canyons and valleys were especially deep? Those bombs still have a glide path they have to follow to get in there, they can’t follow any trajectory they want. I honestly don’t know. I wouldn’t know if thermal conditions would have an effect on it, unless the ordinance in question had terminal IR based guidance.
In most AirWar C21 games we’ve been playing, the Harriers indeed are holding more than their own against Mirages. The system does a solid job of reflecting advantages in maneuverability, weapons load out (AIM-9L Sidewinders), IR flares and ECM chaff, none of which the Argentinian Mirages had. In the recent stream, my Mirages made a mess of @gladesrunner ‘s Harriers only because I realized my missiles were effectively worthless against Harrier’s countermeasures, went straight for gun kills, won initiative, and got lucky with more than a few rolls. I’ve also played the game a few times, and could predict what happened with one of her Harriers IF she failed a maneuver check. Turns out my gamble paid off, her Harrier failed the check, and my Mirage was pointing straight at her point blank range with those guns. And yes, I may have shot down two Harriers, butthe game also cost me a Mirage III EA and three A-4Q Skyhawks … AND I failed to do fatal damage to frigate HMS Alacrity. Hardly a “clean sweep.” 😀
