I am uncomfortable with the idea of Vaccine Passports. It sets a precedent. When governments invoke ’emergency’ powers they seldom give them up, and often use them for other things beyond the ’emergency’.

On the other hand what is the alternative. If shows are saying that masks (not sure why), social distancing and improved ventilation are not possible then proof of vaccination is pretty much the only tool left to try and control the spread of a highly infectious respiratory virus.

I am not sure it is workable, but that is another matter. It assumes that everyone has a smart phone, is willing to download the NHS App (not the covid pingdemic app), and we have faith that this is secure. I am not sure I really want my NHS data on my smart phone.

The problem, like much else right now, is that there is no real debate as the positions are at polar opposites now. You are either a ‘sheep’ who accepts government control, or you are a tinfoil hat wearing denier. The constant flip-flopping policy by the government is just throwing fuel on the fire.

I will keep away from crowded spaces and hope this all works out somehow.

Too which I will add the further rider that the ‘NHS App’ doesn’t cover Scotland or NI let alone anyone attending from further afield. The Scottish NHS is separate, constituted under separate legislation and operates entirely differently.  (No Trusts, for example.) I don’t know about NI, and I think Wales uses the NHS England App.

So good luck getting show visitors to show their vaccine passport.

I don’t even know if there is an App for us in the States.  I’ve got a physical card with my vaccination info.

In England (not sure about the rest of the UK) we have a small card that shows the date, make and batch number of the vaccines we have had. It would be easy to fake so no use as proof. It seems like the whole ‘passport’ plan is another idea lacking in detail which will probably get dropped soon when they work out how impractical it is.

People and especially politicians/governments forgot that there were vaccination passports before covid-19 …

Anyone who has ever gone to a country and needed vaccinations against malaria and similar diseases knows this.
And it was as basic as a stamp + signature for every vaccination that applied in a little (yellow) booklet.
    It’s ancient …

The only thing I’ve got against Covid-19 passports is this :
    (1) it is a re-invention and a needlessly complex system (what if you don’t have a smartphone ? or if the battery has been drained ?)

    (2) it doesn’t cover the rest of the diseases and virii that we should be vaccinated for (measles, small pox, etc)

    (3) it is not fool proof … a vaccinated person can still infect others. The chances are (drastically) lower, but they are never zero.

And as for masks … if people stopped using them as chin diapers and learned to use them properly and if governments didn’t create stupid regulations that make masks optional while sitting and not while moving or any kind of curfew (as if virii can tell time … ). then it could work.

The minimum distance is something that I’d like to see as a standard feature, because the flippin’ crowds at conventions that make it impossible to see anything or go anywhere were annoying as f*ck even before the event.

Calling people ‘sheep’ because they want to do what they think is best during this pandemic is silly.

No one told you to wash your hands after going to the toilet or before preparing food, but common sense for most people is enough to know that you should.

A friend of my family thinks covid is a government conspiracy and refused to have the jab. And she has excemption from masks for whatever reason.

She just tested positive for covid. Now the family member has to get tested because she saw her recently.

And I saw the family member today… and so begins the ‘six degrees of kevin bacon’.

Yeah, I had to get the brain swab on Christmas Eve last year when a co-worker and his family came down with it.  No one else in the office had it, thankfully, and while my co-worker and his family had a crappy Christmas, they all came out of it in the end.  But I’ve had a LOT of clients that have passed away, related to someone who has, or spent a significant amount of time in the hospital.  It’s just heartbreaking.

One of my very good friends, a wargamer who was the best man at my wedding, and who, while a bit overweight, was otherwise in excellent health, tested positive on a Wednesday, admitted to hospital Thursday,  appeared to rally Friday and died Saturday.

I’m not taking this thing lightly.

@khusrau: very sorry to hear that…

…and my sympathies to anyone touched by these tragedies.  🙁

The idiot conspiracy theorists would have had less ammo to use if the governments hadn’t been total twats by ignoring or breaking the rules they themselves designed …

Along with rules that made no sense, like a 10pm curfew on pubs last year. Basically things would have been managed better had we not placed utter fuckwits into government.

To me the whole problem, besides, you know, COVID itself, is that the responses didn’t begin and end with the healthcare professionals.  How this ever got tied to political allegiances is absolutely beyond me.  If my pipes burst and my home is flooding, I call a plumber.  If I’m sick or worried about getting sick, I call my doctor.

@midnightblue that’s because politicians need to show that they are worth something and that they are in ‘control’ …

That’s why they have committees of specialists give them advice, which they ignore because ‘reasons’.
It’s why they create rules with dozens of exceptions and invent ‘clever’ words that mean nothing at all.

We saw the exact same thing happen with the recent floods. The *beeps* only show up because there’s a camera rolling so they can pretend to care despite not having given a damn for decades when they could have stopped things from even becoming a problem …

It’s because under freedom of speech we’ve allowed opportunists and grifters to promote falsehoods and disinformation. Social media at times is a great tool but it’s also one of the worse things to hit the internet.
