So I found a game store “nearby” that had models that weren’t just GW (or that cheap overmarked WotC crap) and lo, I beheld some boxes of Dropzone Commander. I got one box of Scourge and UCM each and now I have a problem. The boxes say they have two ships, but they can each be configured up to nine ways.

I am a total newb at Dropzone and I don’t know anyone (locally) who’s even heard of it. Any suggestions on which ships to assemble so they can be evenly matched against each other?

Make the ones you like the look of the most, then when you play the game just tell your opponent what they are, shouldnt be a problem if youre not playing competitively.

If you have the fast play sheets then you should build the ships on those this will give you two reasonably balanced forces to get you going, that will be a moscow, Berlin & Seattle cruisers and Toulon & New Orleans frigates for the ucm and a shenlong, ifrit & wyvern cruisers and harpy & gargoyle frigates for the scourge.
Alternatively as @soldado says make what you like the look of but make sure each side has some strike carriers as caputuring objectives on the ground is key

I put together a UCM starter fleet tail end of last year. The ships look cool and really I should invest some more time with Dropfleet but I became sidetracked with putting together a Death Guard army.

If you’re looking to dip your toe in the water keep an eye on ebay as often you can get starter fleets on there quite cheap. People buy the two player set like me and sell off the fleet they don’t want.

Also there’s a facebook page where people post up stuff for sale etc.
