With payday errands and sleeping before work, as well as toy shopping for my sons birthday next week, I was too busy to hobby! Though I did tidy the front room, and its now a play room. Hopefully I will have a stay-in ‘not date’ with my gf at hers tomorrow painting models and watching tv (assuming my parents are willing to babysit).

I panicked and ordered Dublin Steel Panther tickets because some gigs in England already sold out. Listening to ‘Fat Girl’ at work now, not posting a link as there is profanity and a huge lack of political correctness <fat girl, whoa oh oh oh! Everything I wanted and more! Fat girl, whoa oh oh oh, she cant fit through the door!>

Starfleet can be – and the crew of TNG were far less interesting than the initial clashing with those in Voyager and DS9 (hats off to Sisko for being involved in assassinating a Romulan ambassador to get them on their side for the Dominion War):

Though the federation isn’t all smiles

Im doing cheap dates and nights in for a while with car tax, insurance renewel, repairs, retests, my sons birthday, two friends birthdays and my mothers… But the GF has almost finished some Warhammer Age of Sigmar models.

Ill try take pics tomorrow or Sunday. I completed those original four bikes, did two more, finished the two landspeeders and added diorama ish bases to the speeders. I now have a squad of ten scouts kitbashed, ready for priming. Its been raining solidly on and off over the last few days and the air is too damp. Im hoping to get a good day to prime. I picked up two double orders of Conquest Magazine so I might do up some Primaris Mantis Warriors on foot too…

You aren’t missing much. Yeah it’s a boelox argument (see, I kept it clean!) to make. Likewise ‘5 year old overturning their toy bin’ isn’t good either. I don’t mind a clear battlefield as long as it looks like a battlefield and not… an empty kitchen table. As long as one army isn’t like, all artillery. BoW did some Zulu stuff a while back, you should give a look for it.

Not much, yes, sadly. I think maybe it’s a good thing that independent tournaments are pretty big for their games right now so you can do what you want for the most part. To be fair CB do have some very nice starters.

It was good at the time but most of the sculpts in it have not aged well, but those Copters are still amazing. I think you can still get them in a model set they do for ye olde model shops rather than hobby shops.

I recommend reading the first chronological (as opposed to written) Elric stories. That and the Warhound and the World’s Pain. I have some of the newer Eternal Champion stuff Mongoose Publishing did a few years ago.

The movie were good, I loved the books but they were not easy to read. At least King has justification (not that I have read much of his stuff) with the whole keen interest in ‘Bolivian Marching Powder’ from back in the day. I keep hearing Heart of Darkness is better than Apocalypse now

Havent seen the Peck Moby Dick movie, nor the Picard one. Is First Contact analgous to it with the whole Locutus, Borg Borg queen thing, cos Im not seeing it.

Nope, no book club for me.

I like Jefferies stand up but not so much his TV show. Bill Hicks is a comedian @irredeemable has gone on about at length to me in our painting sessions. The guy died very young of a heart attack just when he got a HBO series, I have read. Who knows what we would have got with stand up shows, tv programs and movies.

I vaguely recall reading Spike Milligan pieces here and there as a child.

Steel Panther did a few Crue covers at their last gig. So good.

I prioritised minding the dogs over going to Metallica this year but they were well past their creative prime and shorter past their physical one.

    Never seen Danzig before sadly.

A wacoshop miniature for what challenge?

    Nice ebay find!

@sundancer – even I know they are Star Wars minis! 200pts. They are quite nice figures – well posed and ‘natural’ looking. I’m sure if I was a fan I would be playing like a fiend.

You were not that late. 100pts. We are still a few regulars missing. I think we need to mount a press-gang!

@limburger – that is awesome! 1000pts. Are there many of them where you live?

I have loads of money – how much?

@mage – toy shopping…what did you get? I used to love going to the toy/model shop with my grandfather when I was really young. 500pts.

I am going to take a stroke-effected guess that your son is 5-6 now? Time certainly goes quickly. Heather sometimes freaks out at the thought of having a 26 year old daughter. Are you having a party?

“Hopefully I will have a stay-in ‘not date’ with my gf at hers tomorrow painting models and watching tv”, really? I bet you do a bit of roleplay too…naughty boy spilled the water and the strict GW manger gets to tell you off! I know about these things.

All the Steel Panther songs would get you lynched on a US college campus. I love them. Me and the boy are going…VIP tickets for a ‘meet & greet’ too! I wanted to go to Glasgow and see them, but Heather said “not a chance”. We also have tickets for the Smyths in December. It is the night before Heather breaks for xmas so I will have to get her a bit drunk! At the moment that gig is a massive ‘maybe’ depending on how I am.

My favourite lyric would be: “If I was the King I would outlaw clothes for chicks, so you could see if they sh***d their P******, or if they were hiding di**s.” That is pure genius. Fuck Shakespear.

So, they are just a new Spinal Tap, but they can really play…that is what must piss people off. The onstage chat is better than 99% of any comedy show. They were talking about picking up chicks and the guitarist said that he is 45 and still picking up girls half his age. The singer add, “Yeah, but you have been doing that since you were 20!” I was still laughing when the song started.

DS9 was still dreadful. Ferengi are just a very crude, and very vulgar, version of “space-jews”. The only thing they don’t do is say, “Oy Vay!” I am surprised nobody complained about it. The Ferengi, like the Klingons, would never have made it to the point of developing warp capability. Way too much infighting.

I just can’t read ‘fantasy’. It bores me to death – don’t know why, but it does.

First Contact is all about revenge and going too far to achieve it. In Moby Dick, Ahab ignores the pleas from another ships Captain to find his missing son, but Ahab cannot stop from finding the Whale. Picard goes way too far when he accuses Worf of being a coward for not fighting to the death. Worf replies, “If any other man had said that to me I would kill him where he stands.” Picard just tell him to get of ‘his’ bridge. Some of Picards dialogue mirrors what Ahab preaches to his crew. Maybe I just read too much into it and was very high at the time.

The book ‘Heart of Darkness’ is clearly the backbone of ‘Apocalypse Now’, but it blows it away. So well told that at times you forget that you are listening to a tale being recounted to a small gathering and you expect the death of the speaker so many times! Get a ‘classics’ copy for £3 next time you are near a Waterstones.

Bill Hicks was NOT a comedian. He made things sound funny, but if you think about it you ought to be terrified! His bit about Kennedy being murdered is outstanding. I am not sure what you read, but Bill died of pancratic cancer. The last 2 weeks of his life he said nothing. He ‘said’ that he had said everything he needed to. As for stand-up shows for TV – I doubt it, not with his material. That was why he was removed from TV when he was part of SNL or one of the other big shows. The last thng you need is people thinking abuot stuff.

I found this when I was looking for some speaker cable…

So, i’ll paint this old Wacoshop mini and you can do an Infinity figure.

    I also found this:

    IMG_20190928_132949_HDRIMG_20190928_132958_HDR

Traitor Guard! I had about 80 of these – not all fully ‘transformed’, but quite a few had differences.

    @unclejimmy I think it’s +/- 5000 Euro total …
so yeah, you could buy a decent used car for that kind of money, but you couldn’t have half the fun driving.
I’ve only seen one other person riding a trike like mine. Recumbents are a rare sight, but I know there are a few enthusiasts out there.

The link with First Contact and Moby Dick is definitely there in the movie. I think it’s when Picard realises he’s going too far.
Then again … he had been captured by the  borg and made to do unspeakable things so it’s not like he had no reason to obsess about what the borg could do.

I agree that both Ferengi and Klingons have a society that is too silly to be viable. The sad part is that back in TNG when the Ferengi were first encountered they were completely different. I guess a cheap stereotype is easier to write than a complex alien race, which is why so few shows have good alien characters.

The one thing I liked about DS9 was that they willing to go down a darker path than TNG had done. The political/religious violence in the initial seasons was what made it so good.

Best character of the show has got to be Elim Garak. The little tailor that could …

    Good Morning All!

Some chores this morning and then back to the books. I never did get to my blog assignment yesterday. Why do crises always happen on Friday afternoon? Then there was a panic to get plants covered or indoors as there was a frost warning last night. No hobby accomplished either. Maybe later in the day, or tomorrow. I do believe I’m insulating a shed at some point, so confidence is low.

@unclejimmy The test had nothing to do with the material taught. I actually thought I was prepared!

Ender’s Game was also a good book, but the movie was just OK. Critics weren’t fond of it either.

@sundancer I like the mounted ton ton figure. I would consider using him in my Traveller games but he is so iconic, I don’t think anyone would see him as anything other than a Star Wars model.

Some mellow music this morning. This movie freaked me out badly when I was a kid… more than the book.

    HAL found this this morning.

I’ll try and check in later.

@limburger – that is pretty expensive, but I could afford a few! My first Harley-Davidson was less than that. So was my Dragstar. Very cool looking machine…I would definatley ride one of those. 500pts. Do you not fancy being a ‘biker’?

Driving a car/driving a car is nothing compared to doing the same journey on a bike. They say that only bikers know why dogs are so happy when they put their heads out of a car window. Closed-faced helmets are a terrible things – I had to wear one when I did my test and that is why (I think) I failed the first time.

I have seen a few similar machines in other. bigger, cities. Newcastle is tiny for a city. You can walk from one side of the town centre to the other in less than 30 minutes. Way less. If you campare it to somewhere like Manchester or Birmingham it is a village!

Picard did ‘realise’ what his actions were leading to, but Ahab either didn’t or didn’t care. I think that was deliberate because Ahab was an utter twat and would have doomed his own crew in a heartbeat. There is a recent movie that is sort of MD, but I haven’t seen it. It is called ‘In the Heart of the Sea’ and is supposed to be really good. I suppose that revenge is one of the classic themes for a story. Hamlet can be compared to MD, but only if you excuse the Prince’s procrasternation and madness.

All of the ‘alien’ races from modern Trek are terrible. Again, all of your classic themes and enemies are there. Look at original Klingons and they were just Mexicans/Chinese/Communist enemies from that era. The Klingons would have never got past their early nuclear age. The Romulans were just Romans and might have had a chance, but would have wiped out the Vulcans the first chance they got. Cardassians were the SS/Gestapo/Nazis and they did a good job with them – until they started to expand that idea and then it just went stupid.

Babylon 5 had a few races, but they only fleshed out the main ones. No filler required. Vorlons = the white man making everything civilised without caring how it is done, Centauri are the Prussian Empire, Minbari = humans that think they are more civilised and know better. I will stop there. We could go on, and on, and on…

Garak was a good character. He is what is called ‘a Dutch uncle’. 100pts. That picture is awesome.

@ceppie – if you want a good sci-fi book/movie then try ‘Lathe of Heaven’. I have had a few tests like that. However, being a total genius it was never a concern. The Alan Parsons Project did a great concept album based on the stories of E.A. Poe. ‘Tales of Mystery and Imagination’ is what I think it is called.

If my stamina holds out then me and the boy are going to have a 250pt game tomorrow. He wants to try his new O-12! Fingers crossed. I am not fully familiar with all the Shazvastii rules yet so I might use JSA or Kazaks to kick his skinny ass.

This is what I woke-up to find on the pillow next to me…Rufus.

One of our newer neighbours got a Pug about 8 months ago and I take mine to have a run about with his. He got another one today! Rescue Pug, almost a year old called Sherlock. More Puggy fun when I can get out.

@unclejimmy Actually, the album ‘Tales of Mystery and Imagination’ got me reading Poe and all the delicious dark stuff he’s known for. If you want a short read, look for ‘A Cask of Amontillado.” Vile stuff, BTW. Should only be served to students at raves and reviled sommeliers.

I will definitely give ‘Lathe of Heaven’ a look. The book would appeal to me more than a movie, as I feel I’m rotting if I watch TV. Even the documentaries these days are dumbed down to the point where I nap.

Where are those beastmen from? They look fabulous! Victoria Miniatures makes some great combo’s as well.

Back to work. No hobby today.

@unclejimmy all alien races are stereotypical planet of hats but despite all of that a few shows manage to make good characters out of such things.

I think that’s why the Cardassians like Garak worked whereas their race didn’t make sense.
I wish I had had the opportunity to see B5 when it was broadcast, because it was cool to see a series that wasn’t about a bunch of holier-than-thou supremacists. That Centauri ambassador and his reptillian counterpart were brilliant.

Those Brother Vinnie minis look good. If it wasn’t for my mountain of plastic I’d might find a way to add them, because there’s nothing wrong with a bit of eye candy.

btw : I’m glad I live in a country where bicycle riders don’t have to wear helmets at all. While I’m certain that these things make sense for kids the adults need to make their own decision whether or not they should wear one.
One day I’ll get myself one of those WW 1 era pilot helmets and matching goggles, because the sort of stuff that gets into your eyes at low speeds is not fun.  For now I make do with a pair of sun glasses, but they’re not that useful at night or in bad weather.

Only two types of people wear helmets on their bike : tourists and idiots on racing bikes who think they’re fast with their fat belly in spandex … and both look stupid.

    1. Terrain and terrain set-up. Do you just fling it together or does it have to look correct?

In a tournament as long as I have some cover I’m not too worried. When I play 40k versus my regular opponent I like to recreate shelled versions of places we know like the gaming shop, where we work etc.

    2. I watched a video where they were showing off a starter-set. Are you a straight from the box kind of girl or do you buy a rulebook, a few minis, some other bits, then get going? What do you think about “starter-sets”?

I usually build starter sets as described but then start head swapping etc on duplicate sets. I am a big fan of starter sets, 1 player and 2 player. Very much looking forward to my KoW3 one arriving in about a month. Agreed about the Ariadna starter, sorry, USAriadna. 100% used everything in the box. Then bought more.

    3. Did some reading to pass the time. Books to movies tend to not work very well, but is there any you like/love?

Graham McNeill’s Mechanicum series was written like a TV show and would be great to watch. As for book to film Running with the Demon by Terry Brooks.

@unclejimmy so you don’t like fantasy. Fair enough. Also I enjoyed the film The Dark Tower and I enjoyed The Dark Tower book series. Not sure I’d pretend they were the same thing.

    4. Comedy sucks. Not all, but most. Your favourite double-act(s)?

Edmondson & Mayall. I saw Bottom Live and it was brilliant. I also like Mitchell & Webb. Both the series and of course the Almighty Peep Show.

My pledge this week is nothing. I’ve got a busy week but if I do it will just be working on bases for my Hellboy and Vanguard Infernals.

Pics of my Vanguard Fishmen all based up.
