    Good morning OTTer CoGs.

Today I have a topic/question for you that could lead to very long answers:

How do you manage your work appearing on all the social networks?

I know some of you do miniature painting and building for a living or at least as a part time job that creates income. So ‘spreading the word’ is an important piece of generating money. How do you do it?

I, for my part, don’t make any money from my hobby. But I try to show my works to as many people as possible. But that starts to get really much work. Let’s say I finished a mini. I took a lot of photos along the way and can now show the world what I did. Usually I start sharing pictures already in the progress of painting and this is how it goes:

    • taking pictures
    • posting pictures on Instagram with automated sharing on twitter
    • posting pictures on my instance of pixelfed [1] with automated sharing to mastodon [2]
    • posting pictures on Facebook in appropriate groups like Star Wars: Legion (if it is a Legion mini) Tabletop Minions or any German equivalent of it.
    • posting pictures in the unofficial weekender thread and add an entry to the project it belongs to.
    • posting a complete build and paint blog entry on my hobby blog. [3]

This is really work at times. And I wonder: is it worth it? I couldn’t tell you since I don’t generate any money by this and don’t collect any meta data.

How about you? Do you post your progress everywhere or just sometimes? Feel free to discuss and if you know any tools that make posting things only easier then please let me know 🙂

[1] Pixelfed: A free and ethical decentralized photo sharing platform. Works like Instagram but without adds. I’m to be found HERE

[2] Mastodon: Like Twitter “Social networking, back in your hands. Follow friends and discover new ones among more than 4.4M people. Publish anything you want: links, pictures, text, video. All on a platform that is community-owned and ad-free.” I’m to be found HERE

[3] My hobby blog. Most time in Kraut. HERE

I restrict my social media activity as much as possible and try to avoid anything that links my real life to my on-line persona.
I also never felt the need to share every bit with people I don’t know personally.

I used to have a G+ account, but that social media site was killed by Google.
I’ve seen people try  and move to different platforms and I’ve got an account on MeWe as a result.

MeWe is like Mastodon one of the alternative social media networking sites that claim they value your privacy, although to be honest I am a bit paranoid because there simply is no way to erase any data that has been published on the internet no matter how many ‘security’ features you try to layer on top of it.

However I’ve noticed that I simply don’t have the time to maintain an active account on multiple sites, so effectively any hobby stuff is limited to OTT projects and the OTT Discord channel.

I do have LinkedIn, but it is strictly for work, although I sometimes do post kickstarter links.

I did the opposite.  I am trying to actively reduce the amount of social media I need to manage, but I also don’t make money from painting. So I basically post here and to my Facebook page, which I set up primarily to stop people who aren’t interested in seeing photos of painted toy soldiers from seeing them on my news feed.

In terms of social media, Facebook is the only one that I maintain any sort of presence on and I don’t currently plan on changing that.

I’m on Facebook mostly to check in on some wargaming groups whereI occasionally post pictures. I’m a xlbs member and in one of the OTT chatrooms on messenger and on discord. That’s about it apart from a couple of manufacturers dedicated forums

I’ll bung up the odd photo on Facebook when I can be bothered.  I chose FB because I interact with my RL gaming friends there.  I have made a couple of projects on OTT because I felt like it and wanted to try the  system out, but generally I’m not that bothered about sharing photos of my stuff as its a hassle and I’m not very interested in other people’s opinions of my work.

My suggestion is to decide what you want to get out of the process and then focus on the platform that will be most likely to deliver that result for you.
