As Youtube is not yet workblocked for me, I find myself rooting through its depths as a source of entertainment in quiet moments, and thought others might be the same.
There’s of course loads on there to talk about but I thought something maybe worth starting a thread about would be those channels that are “inspiring” in an indirect way. I don’t mean those gaming channels that talk about games and models and painting and stuff, but ones that talk about the background and history and things that generally get our juices flowing and provide inspiration for general understanding of the period or genre we then end up hobbying and gaming in.
I have loads in my Subscriptions list, but I thought I’d initially share 3 of my favourites and see if anyone had any others to recommend.
The three I suggest you may be interested in, if you haven’t found them already are:
1. Mark Felton Productions: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfCKvREB11-fxyotS1ONgww
Mark covers primarily WWII but has got a great collection of interesting war stories – those moments of derring-do that make you go “WTF!” when you consider the insanity that our forefathers were involved in in the ’40’s! Such as his most recent: “Grasshopper vs. Fieseler Storch – WW2’s Weirdest Dogfight”.2. Lindybeige: https://www.youtube.com/user/lindybeige
Full disclosure: I attended Uni with Lloyd, count him as a friend, and I do feature in a couple of his videos . I won’t say which! However, quite genuinely I do think he produces some interesting stuff you don’t see elsewhere. There is stuff about medieval armour, Victorian warfare, tanks, re-enactment and much rambling about ancient warfare in general, as well as film making and lindyhop dancing! Some of his most interesting I have found are about his acquisition of a reconstructed plate armour.Finally,3. The Tank Museum: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChl-XKVVBAzoEVsnbOfpcqw
I am sure many of you will have found this one already, but really if you like WWII it is an absolute MUST to subscribe. David Fletcher’s “Tank Chats” are a special wonder in and of themselves!Anyhow. Over to you! What would you recommend I look at next time I’m bored at work?
February 19, 2019 at 9:11 pm #1351408I shall leave aside my ASMR channels and for the time being some of the painting ones I subscribe to, although I can give you them later on.
Youtube documentaries are great, so many classic shows available nowhere else now, but as far as updated channels go there are a couple I enjoy.
Despite not being interested in guns I watch every update from Forgotten Weapons the mix of history, context and stripping and firing the weapons I find fascinating and handy for my passion for RPGs the game not the weapon 😉
Likewise The Great War an almost day by day look at the first world war, a wealth of information that I can happily pop on and leave running soaking up what I can when I can.
Kurtus has a fantastic channel, full of reviews, battle reports, solo play and using skype to play remote games. The paint and chats are full of great guys, it may not be as polished as some channels but as a fellow gamer putting it out there I think he’s well worth checking up on.
February 20, 2019 at 7:31 am #1351567Shadiversity is the go to guy for Castles and Medieval Buildings
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkmMACUKpQeIxN9D9ARli1QMatt Easton is a Victorian Sword expert
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkmMACUKpQeIxN9D9ARli1Q
The Terrain Tutor is self explanatory
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkmMACUKpQeIxN9D9ARli1Q
British Muzzle Leaders covers super in depth 1800-1940’s military techniques.

C&Rsenal is probably my favourite. They cover WWI firearms in ridiculous detail. They go back and look at how the weapons were made, why they were made that way, who made them, who taught the guy who designed them, what historical events inspired them and everything else you could ever want to know.
February 20, 2019 at 10:18 am #1351708My suggestion list is going to be less historical but more about creativity and video editing.
Donoteat01: Re-creates the beginning of America with Cities Skylines.
Every Frame A Painting: Very important resource for anyone looking to study film design or editing skills, great for inspiration and what I do on the daily.
Ludicryan: Our own nerd from the office talks about game theory. He has a PHD so I assume he knows what he’s talking about.
Nerdwriter1: Video essays about random subjects.
Questing Beast: Reviews a lot of RPG books & campains.
TheCrafsMan: Have to thank Lloyd for this marvelous human being, makes a lot of hobby orientated projects, excellent channel.
February 20, 2019 at 10:22 am #1351710Matt Colville for his extensive work on world building and running Dungeons & Dragons games – https://www.youtube.com/user/mcolville/

February 20, 2019 at 11:35 am #1351745Subbed and Dong Dinged mate ?
Wait. What? Does that mean I need to create content now?! Stop scaring me! I’m old and fragile!
February 20, 2019 at 12:01 pm #1351753@sundancer . Yes it does. I think were all expecting several videos on the conspiracy theories in Star Wars and how there linked to the demise of the FLGS’s across the world and influenced KS’s of deliberately engaging in fraud against the gamers of the world and has also been linked to world famine, war and climate change
Or….
A cute video of your cat
February 20, 2019 at 7:59 pm #1352016@osbad : LindyBeige definitely has a lot of interesting content.
