Polite Constructive Criticism of the model, paint job and photo quality would be appreciated 🙂
February 24, 2019 at 12:57 pm #1353262February 24, 2019 at 1:00 pm #1353263February 24, 2019 at 3:35 pm #1353287February 24, 2019 at 4:18 pm #13533041. Regale us with an anecdote from a game where you really hadn’t earned the win but it was handed to you by a lucky card or die roll.
I guess the main one that comes to mind is the 40k tournament I won with necrons. My Eldest opponent had the upper hand and was on the cusp of phasing me out. He fired everything he had to clear out my destroyers but one survived. 2 came back from reanimation protocols and the other came back from the monolith. He’d basically wasted an entire turn. You don’t come back from that.
2. What is one instance where a hobby company has come through with an idea or concept that just blew you away?
GeeDubya new paint range. It’s so far advanced but easier than anything before it’s unreal. Revolutionised the painting industry I feel. Brushes that tell you what they are for, pre mixed colours, dry paints, texture and technical. It’s a golden age for terrible painters like me.
3. Transformers the Miniatures Game – Could it ever work? Why or why not? Or what about He-man or She-ra or Knight rider or the A-Team or Thundercats? (or any of the other 80’s IP’s that haven’t yet been mined…).
For me, I’d want a dzc scale cross over game. Gi Joe, Transformers, Mask, Zoids and He Man. It would be amazing. I can picture the little Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow figures now.
Hobby wise I have assembled my Conquest mag scenery. At last! Also lashing of nuln oil on my walking dead bases. Another bout of painting with nothing like a visible end product.
February 24, 2019 at 8:39 pm #1353457Hi lads…. I’m still here… still active… and I’m doing hobby. But I can’t share any details yet… but soon’ish… and then we’ll all have a big laugh… I hope XD
February 24, 2019 at 10:01 pm #1353493I didn’t exactly pledge it out loud, but I got another project ticked off this weekend.
I was expecting them to be one of those slower-burner-come-back-to-it-many-times-over-a-few-weeks kind of thing, but once I got going, just couldn’t wait to see them working: https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1349641/
February 25, 2019 at 9:36 am #1353615@tuffyears great work! And nice to see that you have a bit of elbow room in the new studio 🙂 And nice to hear you are recruiting too (or at least helping feed a current addiction…). 30 gold coins for great hobby progress.
@mage haha nice anecdote! I like the sound of the theme for that army – very thematic. I was considering doing a 30k Emperor’s Children project just for giggles a couple of years ago, but I can’t justify the price of the FW models for something I know I’ll never play. The Tyranid trophies sound like a nice touch. Nice work on the ogre! I like the more muted and rustic skin tones. Only real area that might have scope for improvement from what I can see is the shadowing on the blue sleeves appears in the photos to have a bit too much contrast from the base colour? Might not be as noticeable in real life and likely to actually enhance the look of the model from across the tabletop but that was the only thing I noted in the photo that I’d personally consider amending. Perfectly good as is mind you 🙂 Eww… my eye keeps getting drawn to the goblin throne ‘bucket of destiny’… 40 gold coins for progress and responses.
@woldenspoons reanimating destroyers for the win. Literally in this case 🙂 Haven’t had much of a play with the GW paint range (prefer the dropper bottles personally) but the technical paints I have messed around with all seem like pretty good products. The Waystone Green in particular. Ooh 10mm 80’s crossover goodness could be really interesting. I just wouldn’t want to be the one to have to work out comparative power levels and abilities between IP’s 🙂 30 gold coins for progress and responses.
@sundancer best of luck progressing the super secret project 🙂 10 gold coins for stealthy hobby progress and adhering to your vow of super-secret secrecy 🙂
@blinky465 Nice! Could work well with the Uboat project that @johnlyons was talking about on the hobby hangout last week, or streetlights on terrain, intruder alarms, Infrared/UV lighting indicators for modern or near future combat etc etc. Looking forward to seeing how you choose to implement it. 30 gold coins for awesome hobby progress.
Spent yesterday afternoon tracking down a banner for my newly prepped Nurgle standard bearer, and put together my last marauder to bump the unit up to 20 (I was one short of what I remembered that I needed…), Wasn’t going to break out the primer just for that so went trawling through my boxes and found about 70 night goblins from the WHFB 7th ed starter, so clipped and glued them on to bases and got them primed for a future project. Really hoping the Shieldwolf forest goblin KS funds this time around, would love a bunch of them running amok on the tabletop: 🙂
February 25, 2019 at 9:52 am #1353641Heh, and just as i finish typing that I get an email from Shieldwolf saying that they have opened up a bunch of add-ons from their existing range as part of the campaign. So that should help matters 🙂
February 25, 2019 at 9:53 am #1353642@sundancer that He-Man game looks fun, and I agree wholeheartedly that the game needs to replicate the feel of the cartoons.
@rayzryr a MASK game would be awesome, and I enjoyed your Chess story.
@limburger an A Team game would be interesting as somehow you’d have to have a shooting mechanic that means no-one ever gets hit, and include special rules that all characters can escape burning vehicles without harm
@dawfydd despite the oversized arms, I like the Catachan models. I recently found a load of metal ones from the 90s when I was packing, I’ll have to paint them up sometime.
@evilstu thanks for the welcome back.
@tuffyears love your models, some great work there
@mage the only thing I would do differently on that model, and it may just be the photo, is add a brighter highlight on the rope and wickerbasket on the back to show the detail better.
Anyway, not much done in the shed, but I’ll get a few hours in it later today.
February 25, 2019 at 1:16 pm #1353716So started my week off with the a slight feeling of foreboding as it was time ot take the car in for it’s MOT, the first one this car has had under my ownership – happily it passed with no work needed (but a few advisories to work on over the next year)! So opted for a spot of retail therapy in the new branch of Firestorm Games that opened up earlier this month 🙂 Picked up a can of AP Uniform Grey primer (I was in need of some more), a pot of Stirland Battlemire (so I can get the rest of those Knights based up), a copy of the Getting Started With Age of Sigmar magazine (mainly for the rad Knight-Incantor mini – might take a stab at kit-bashing him into a Primaris Rune Priest or something…), and, unplanned, the Severina Raine mini and the HB version of the book she stars in, so I think my afternoon will be building her and reading Honourbound 🙂
And in order:
@blinky465 good shout on the Battle Systems terrain. Their Kickstarters have been phenomenally good value, but even the mass-retail versions off one of the most cost effective ways to cover a table I’ve ever seen, whilst still looking amazing.
@limburger I take your point, but whilst Aresteia uses a character-only very similar to what Overwatch & Apex Legends deliver in their arena combat, I think a TF licence would run into some major balance issues, but I guess the TF CCG is doing ok so maybe they’ve come up with a work-around?
And yeah, Devastation is pretty rad. It’s from the fine folks at Platinum so the combat is honed to razor sharpness, and they give each of the playable Autobots a distinct style that enourages replays to see who they handle each level, even if you spend a LOT of time beating on anonymous Seekers & Battlechargers….
@evilstu Predator is really quite superb, and I always marvel at how each of the films three major acts clocks in at around the 35-40 minute mark. It’s crazy to think that the film could have been a LOT worse (ever seen pics of the monster suit they initially shot with? That had one Jean-Claude Van Damme inside? It’s a thing, and we will leave it at that), but also that director John McTiernan would better it a year later with the peerless Die Hard o_O
I hear what you are saying about possibly locking in a particular part of the franchise, and G1 is quite literally “the daddy”, but here’s a thing – this year marks 35 years of G1, we are nearing 25 years of Beast Wars, the Unicron Trilogy is nearing 20, and it’s been over a decade since Michael Bay put his mark on things. There are a lot of fans for whom each of those was their Transformers, and I’d hate to see them put off by overly focusing on Generation 1.
@mage gods damn that Mordheim Ogre is just a classic bit of sculpting. Was that one of Brian Nelsons first? Or was that Nicodemus? Loving the paint job and the basing is just aces 🙂
@robert that might even be all they need – the Command and Heavy Weapon kits made the arms on the Catachans comparatively smaller but still buff as heck. And yeah, the classic Jungle Fighters are still pretty rad. Got that whole 80’s action movie vibe down pat
February 25, 2019 at 2:40 pm #1353753Your Undead minis are coming along nice. Image shows weird. Like it shows normal but a quarter of it has a text box or something similar overlapping it. At least on my end.
That Black Coach you painted it is beautiful! Nice AT-ST!
Welcome back! Yeah you’d need transformed versions as well as the robot modes. A lot of the stuff, as you describe, would not work.
A friend of mine, a local artist, has been make and sculpting and kitbashing away at his own He-man stuff. Ill try and find link or add in pictures
@rayryr
Hope the real world stuff hasn’t trampld all over you. That chess story is hilarious, I don’t blame your friend.
I agree with you on the idea of the shared hasbro universe
The points you make about DFC are why I fell in love with it.
#I think the free books were some black library anniversary thingyGood to see you back! Nice assembly on the Catachans. Cant wait to see more material. Traitor legions are in order, yes. Enjoy the time off! Ill come back to you on the transformers
February 25, 2019 at 2:52 pm #1353754Tracking ok. The night shift wasn’t too hard. Didn’t have to hit the coffee til two or three am. Don’t feel fantastic at the moment but that goes with the territory. Im away an hour ish now. Gonna kick into some hobby when I sort out my phone gone wonky
Its one of my favourite models. I played Mordheim before I played Warhammer Fantasy. I was ten or something when it first came out. I freaking fell in love with the game and it really does have a special place in my heart.
Man that throne for your nephew is beautiful
I strongly agree with you on the paint range. And the plethora of books, guides and youtube videos? Mama mia!
Can I make a wild guess and predict the hobby your not allowed to share is star wars related?
Interesting project.
Thanks dude I was thinking that but still am not as good at browns as I would like to be. I was not sure what colour to hilight it with.
There is a nice bit that is GW plastic which is hh. You could always mix HH and modern space marines, not primaris, and have like an early heresy 40k chaos army and just use it in 40k?
All the termies have trophy spikes with nids, a banner with a severed carnifex head, and the lord and on foot marines (only eleven models) have a genestealer head or skull mounted on top of their backpacks.
I was trying to keep the Ogre looking like a cross between the one GW did and the one John Paul Brisigotti did for his Marineburger warband that appeared in white dwarf. Recently I bought older GW kits still in production and trawled ebay for some choice Mordheim pieces.
Too much contrast? I must think about that.
Yup I did not know it was poop til I assembled it.
Im not sure who sculpted it tbh

Right gang off to plug in my laptop, try fix my phone, and in general make my self presentable. Hopfeully pics to follow. And my thoughts on Transformers
February 25, 2019 at 5:04 pm #1353807February 25, 2019 at 6:10 pm #1353844I’m thinking it is Sam as one of the hobbits …
You’re killing us with your super secret shenanigans @sundancer
We must know or else we hates you foreverssss … yesss! 😉

@robert : I was thinking the exact opposite.
A bit how the reboot of Battlestar Galactica made everything a bit more ‘real’
@woldenspoons : remind me to never ever pick an opponent with Necrons. Re-animating units is soo evil.
OTOH … I feel tempted to start a Cult army because those sneaky sons of ‘stealers get to do ambushes. It’s good to be evil, right ?
