Interesting to hear the Beasts talking so much about 3d printing in the videos this weekend; it might just be something I take an interest in after all, now I’ve a 3d printer working and another just about to be completed….
In other news, 3d printing is really, really slow (average print time for 28mm terrain is about 2.5-3hrs). Which means tonight I’ve had ample time to finish painting my Man-at-Arms miniature (though maybe need to make that club look a little more interesting in his hand) and start splashing some orange onto Beast-man.
(at arms length, they look ok – I’m glad to have discovered that thinning paints with retarder makes them not only easier, but more enjoyable to paint with. Plus, I no longer get the clumpy textured appearance on skin and armour any more. GW Duncan was right all along….)
March 25, 2019 at 3:54 am #1366215Hey,
not much hobby from me this weekend so far. I went to undercoat the two bare minis, and couldn’t find the nozzle for my rattle cans…
The spray cans I’ve been using have a tendency to dry and clog the nozzle, even when I clear it at the end of a spray session by turning the can upside down and blasting propellant through. 3 out of 4 had clogged to the point of uselessness. The fourth I started washing in turps at the end of each session and reusing. Now I’ve lost it, and I’ve 4 semi-full cans of primer. ?
I’ve spent a good part of the day coming up with an alternative package for my recipient of Avernos’ random act of kindness exchange. Stripping the minis I was going to send was proving problematic. I need some fresh Simple Green.
In good news I’ve just found a news agency that has 40K Conquest issue 1 in good stock. I’ll pick up at least 1 copy to get started. The Primaris will reinforce my Dark Angels!

@sundancer Agreed on Mel’s book. With just under 3 weeks to go and just about to where the hardback stretch goal sits I think that many people agree with you on the terrain love.
@kiranamida Lol… love of Disney will get you. Now, with all the love on the tanks… could you give them a Disney makeover? There was already a pink Sherman that @amachan did.
@robert Orderliness can be overrated, but in this hobby with so much crap going on at such a small scale it helps to have a better idea on where the hell the tiny bits landed when they slip from your fingers. Now the AoS Blood Bowl teams seems like the older teams would just need some touches here or there for fit. Then again if that didn’t fit, do some kitbashing and pore over the stuff in FUMBBL for stats that might work. I’ve thought about putting together a Tzeentch and a Slaanesh team that way.
@rayzryr Yes, weird videos ftw of today and yesteryear. As far as music do you find that the exploration gives you chance to delve deeper into the aural realm of bliss better than all the leg work of just finding the music to begin with?
@limburger Boardgaming with full power! Good luck in your hobby efforts. If you get too sidetracked with the outing the painting/modding won’t get done. Lol… “Do you want to paint forever?”
@tuffyears You don’t like the flying bases but you “have foot on rock”… from one trope to another. Honestly they look badass.
@oriskany You Live!!! 1974 minis? Sheesh. Again with the huge armies of yore. I’m not one for huge force painting (being reinforced by these &^#$(@ Eldar) but given some time I might do something. I happened to see in a local used book/2ndhand game/music store the Clan War box set, sculpted by Bob Murch, AEG put out years ago.
@blinky465 Great to see the castle coming along. I agree that the turrets would be good to do old school by hand. As far as your love of vinyl look into Bandcamp. They have a healthy community that releases vinyl. Surprisingly, they also have artists that put out cassette tapes.

@evilstu Treat yourself well, you’ve got the work done on those, oddly green based, blocks of plastic people. You earned it as well as those guys have come out. Its good to see that the actual state colors were used. I have however wondered about how that might’ve worked for Mordheim as those sculpts were more like Cult of Ulric barbarians.
@mage Rejoice and be happy that you can drag yourself back into work in order to further spending hard earned cash on minis! That being said its good to be focused and balancing things to not tax yourself with leaisure.
@robert Good to see the progress and witness that there really is room to the room.
@woldenspoons Kickstarter frustration with all the shiny is definitely something we all get. I’ve tossed money at some that have panned out and I’m still waiting on others to deliver. The worst ones that I’[ve had luck with so far have all been videogames. Anything with a material component, thus far, has really been on point to make progress even if there were delays. Now what’s so bad about cooking shows? I’ve watched my fair share, or enough for a couple more people, to sit drooling (not quite literally but damn close) when watching how to make Korean food at home. Good stuff with the board now for terrain painting work a la Mel’s book.
@sundancer This is why I don’t send you serious things that to be taken seriously
March 25, 2019 at 5:55 am #1366236@mage nice paint job done… maybe a white dot in the middle of the blue circle on the pack? “Kick me” or “aim here”? 😉 #scnr

@limburger I think that the unfortunate fact that many games have that competition and requirement to diversify into niches has been a good thing for Kickstarter for us as backers. I can say that RN Estudio and Sukubus Studios have been good for Blood Bowl alternate sculpts to what GW put out before the reboot of the IP. Honestly I think that the newest sculpts are good but the way that they have been remade takes it all to a level of seriousness that the originals never meant to touch.
@evilstu That’s exactly the motif I was thinking of when I reminisced on the Middenheimers. Good job. Now about this Conan the Salaryman… I am inspired to share Gundarr the Barbarian
@blinky465 Hobbyists will hobby. Now about this MotU game… will you go all out and drop the time/cash on Mudbox in order to sculpt your own Skunkor and then, post paint/seal, dip it into patchouli oil like the original to get the foul smell?
@mage Wow, those came out well. I’ll post some updates soon about the Eldar. You can’t be the only one to post the figure pr0n.
@rayzryr Try looking into the graffiti scene for info on nozzles. I remember quite a bit of literature has been written on rattle can effects and how nozzles vary the effects. On top of that there are companies like Molotow that make sweet paint markers that you can do all sorts of large scale writing with for signage/walls. That reminds me about Calligraffiti that you might take an interest in due to geography
Ok.. all caught up. Time for sleep
March 25, 2019 at 6:57 am #1366239@mage those Minotaurs are coming out fantastic. Dirty gold works really well and looks so good. The Librarian is outstanding, very impressive work.
Glad to see @oriskany is finding time to hobby, seems we have been lacking in the historical painting progress pics.
I did some hobby at the weekend, assembled stuff from Conquest mag and slapped red paint on my Daemonkin. Sadly may not get much more done before my game this weekend.
March 25, 2019 at 8:15 am #1366240@horati0nosebl0wer – Skunkor? Erm, no.
I’m halfway through painting Beastman and feel like I’ve painted enough. Just hope I can keep the momentum going to get to Skeletor (I thought I’d keep him ’til last, to ensure I got the others painted, rather than just the two main characters, then give up!). After a full MOTU box (from Quest Miniatures) and a couple of extra characters, delivery and then the unexpected sting of import and parcel handling charges (thanks, Royal Mail) coupled with the outlay on a new 3d printer, my wife has suggested that maybe I’ve dropped enough money on this particular whim.
I don’t have enough brownie points to even consider buying some patchouli oil 😉
March 25, 2019 at 10:36 am #1366330@horati0nosebl0wer yes there are definitely too many shiny kickstarters, and never enough hobby time or raw cash to burn on them all. Even if I’m not backing a KS I do get a bit of a smile when one I’m keeping an eye on successfully funds. Hah, Bandcamp. have been doing well so far not to set up an account with either them or Beatport. But I know someday I will give in. It’s just getting so hard to chase down tangible media. Embassytown? Hadn’t heard of it – sounds like an interesting read from the brief blurb I’d read – will add to the ‘to read’ pile 🙂 Favourinte silver age animes? Heh, no need to be polite – bases aren’t quite finished. Was initially thinking of adding snowdrift detail but now I’m thinking I’ll go for yellowed flock and cold-burned grass tufts to sort of hint that they are further north rather than going for mini snow banks… The force is designed to integrate with the Cult of Ulric list so if you are seeing that similarity I’ll call it a win, cheers 🙂 50 points for post responses to all.
@blinky465 well if you can get parts within a day I guess it’s not too much of an issue. I sort of hit the default assumption that anything I’m going to need will be a week away by post at best. Oooh auto bed levelling is so much better than manual. You will never get tired of it 🙂 Hey that printer sounds like it was a bit of a steal at that price (missing screws notwithstanding). yes, always trust Duncan. And yes, stuff takes even longer to print when you have to keep one eye on how the job is running 😛 Nice progress on the MOTU. No love for Skunkor? That’s probably for the best 🙂 50 points for responses, hobby progress and 3DP assembly 🙂
@limburger Ah classic cubicle Conan 🙂 Er, still a ways off 60 minute prints – the job I’m repeatedly running presently is a 21 hour 150mm wall section… 20 points.
@robert glad you have a well detailed ‘to do’ list on your blackboard 🙂 That terrain looks pretty good! Is the Abyssal Dwarf just because, or part of a larger project? I do quite like those minis… 30 points for hobby progress and responses.
@mage nice progress! Really like that burnished gold. Keen to see them all ranked up for the mandatory group shot once you have the force done to your satisfaction 🙂 50 points for hobby progress.
@rayzryr can you perhaps invest in a new can and port the new nozzle between the existing ones? Yeah, going to stock up on Simple green on my next Bunnings run. And look for some of that adhesive window frosting @lloyd had on this week’s XLBS. The mirrored one looks like a great way to do scratchbuilt high rise office buildings in Cyberpunk tabletops. Not that I’ve ever thought of doing something along those lines of course…. Congrats on finding Conquest locally! Good to hear some DA reinforcements are inbound. I might have to wander about the mall at some stage in the near future… 20 points.
@woldenspoons in our collective defence I do have a few historical projects queued up but I’m having this odd sort of mental block where I want the historicals to look good so I’m too nervous to progress them. It’s silly I know, but that’s why I’ve gone back to mass painting 20 year old starter box GW sculpts that don’t really matter if I overstep etc. I really need to at least get my 2 Napoleonic Sharp Practice (British and French) core forces to tabletop (and retouch my 95th rifles – not happy with where they are presently sitting). I think once I get a few games in it might spark my motivation… 20 points.
Got placeholder bases on my 6 characters tonight, and hit them and the artillery with a matt spraycoat. Will detail the abses for the whole project this w/e time permitting then move on to the cavalry…
March 25, 2019 at 10:37 am #1366331@blinky465 can you 3D print some brownie points? Just askin’…
March 25, 2019 at 11:06 am #1366355@blinky465 looking forward to seeing your Ram-Man and Fisto. Ah more innocent times. Totally ruined (aka improved to hilarious levels) by Grumpy Skeletor.
March 25, 2019 at 11:34 am #1366364Page 1 & 2 responses (short and sweet, also apologies if I missed anyone)
@sundancer – I like the Arabs from Page 1
@tuffyears – I will have to power that basing style, I prefer what you have done there compared to the flying stands.
@oriskany – Great to see you back on the thread. Some nice stuff pictured with the Acts of Kindness, Christmas Present and project on the go. How did you do the basing on them? The last pic, that is. I like it.
@blinky465 – Castle Greyskull is coming along nicely.
@evilstu – I hope the shoulder feels better. I really like the Middenheim army.
@robert Nice set-up with the music system
@limburger CONAN! Has it arrived yet?

Had to be done. Still not feeling back to 100% but am back to work. I think I just need to rest a tiny bit more and then get into exercise again proper and get the body active and alive. Relaxed yes, playing a lot of Zelda between short bursts of painting.
Re Paranoid Minis, like what someone else said above, they were going for a niche within a niche. Its sad to see them gone. I think what a company needs to do now (well now is tougher since GW are back at full stride) is have a range ready to launch at a con like Hawk did but sort of… avoid Kickstarter. While I would like to see the game get picked up, I cant see it happening. Though I would be very happy to be wrong about that fact.
Also some nice old school Middenheim Minis there!
Nice set up so far!
Haha those tweets are good!
Sounds like you could do with a special nozzle box and leave it somewhere easily remembered like the top drawer in a bedside locker, or something.
Its actually kind of nice to be back and back into the routine and away from the house. I may have overdid it with watching youtube, playing Zelda and hobby. It also makes a nice punctuation mark where its kind of ‘Im officially better’.
Man don’t I know the truth on balancing it all. Needs to be done J
Thanks for the compliment on the minis! J Im hoping to do a little bit more on the next squad tonight after work.
I had to do something with that work surface, and I thought blue would be a nice contrast to the gold and make them look more sci-fi…ey?
Thanks dude! Im proud of the Librarian and find the dirty gold works nice. I like the colours to be vivid and I think I did it even though its dark.
@evilstu , again
Thanks! J Ill do that once I base this batch (basing material should be in the post) and I finish 9-13 more minis…
March 25, 2019 at 11:47 am #1366367@sundancer whoops @robert apologies! Man my head still is a little wishy washy.
