@horati0nosebl0wer – The more I see of that witch, the more I like her! 😀
Happy Halloween! 😀 😀 😀October 24, 2018 at 3:25 am #1291414Thanks, @evilstu . 🙂 Regarding the comparison between miniature and other gaming mediums … I find that, at least when it comes to historical games set in the “post-industrial era” (i.e., anything after black powder) … miniature wargaming just breaks down unless you stick with the very smallest of infantry skirmish games, smaller than Bolt Action, down to 10 men per side like Skirmish Sanguin, etc. Unless your miniatures are so small that you might as well be using hex-counters or computers anyway.
It’s not a question of firepower, it’s a question of range and how the ranges involved realistically interrelate to the tactical movement speeds, expanse of terrain, etc. People day miniature wargaming is “more immersive.” Well, post 1900 historical, it really isn’t. The game has to “lie” and abstract so much about the distances, speeds, spaces, ranges, areas of effect, how long it takes to cross given ground vs. how much firepower you’ll absorb in that time … that the tactics just don’t work and the game becomes, at least for many of us, highly “un-immersive.”
This negates much of the narrative benefit the game might provide, because suspension of disbelief just becomes too difficult. Might as well be playing fantasy.
Anyway, small-scale infantry combat still works, historical periods from black powder and further back still work, sci-fi and fantasy are anyone’s ball game, and of course reasonable folks may differ. Just my take on it.
Anyway, this game is now complete and I’ll be rolling out the rest of the battle report over the next couple of days. It was a real tight game, coming down almost (not quite) to the last roll. I won’t spoil anything, but here’s hoping everyone likes it, especially the “Coleraine commanders” of the 36th Ulster.
I also have those Australian counters drawn up. I might break them out next to text them out, perhaps replay a part of the July 1918, Battle of Hamel, or their part in in the final battles along Cambrai-St. Quentin Canal.
October 24, 2018 at 3:28 am #1291415By the way, is Lance still awarding points for these? I don’t think I got my points for last week.
October 24, 2018 at 5:32 am #1291425@horati0nosebl0wer the witch is looking good where did you get it?
@sundancer wow Bobo looks incredible. I struggle with yellow and you’ve done it flawlessly
@oriskany loving the Project. My favourite part so far “Bothi’s section is wiped out! Technically by its own attack roll!” the amount of times I’ve done this exact thing in Force on Force gives me a lot of sympathy for those poor little tokens.
@evilstu a belated thanks for hosting
I’ve put a wash on my Star Wars Legion and the rest should be arriving today. Coming up Two Fleet Troopers boxes and a Commandos box. They look darker in real life, I’ve really got to play around with my Camera.
October 24, 2018 at 6:05 am #1291427@evilstu thanks, a bit tho she’s still a bit feverish. And why not make christmas special Boba Fett? It would only be the colour scheme and make him very unike 😉
@elessar2590 thank you. My secret to yellow: white undercoat and then slap GW sunburst yellow (the old pot) on it. Nothing more.
October 24, 2018 at 6:06 am #1291428October 24, 2018 at 8:56 am #1291462I wish i had the time to give everyone of you some more indepth comments on your hobby projects and discussions, but i fear time is one of the things that is eluding me at the moment …. i wonder what i did to time that it shies away from he … hmpf!
But very inspiring work from every single one of you!
I did some experiments for the metal armor plates on my idoneth but nothing came out even near to what i want them to look like. So at the moment i’m waiting for a delivery with some paints that hopefully will get me closer to my goal … it’s time to test it with some Scale 75 Alchemy metals. To bridge the time i mashed some elven kits together to get something that looks a little bit like high elven archers. I’ll try to show some pictures of them later today.
Wish me luck and keep your fingers crossed that i will be able to find and catch some time again!
October 24, 2018 at 9:03 am #1291464Re last week, I was late designating point allotments out to people when I ran the thread. Fell behind a little. Maybe that’s why they didn’t get added. My bad on that one ?
October 24, 2018 at 9:39 am #1291475Achievements are the only source of experience during these Hobby Weekenders, these are collected and tallied on the Monday by myself or Tom. If you’ve been awarded an achievement at the end of the thread, you’ll be awarded the points allocated to it.
Any other points are arbitrary and effectively invisible karma. This is confusing because Warren introduced the achievements to make these topics easier to reward participants and alleviate the stress and randomness of assigning points each week.
October 24, 2018 at 11:37 am #1291525@sundancer Fett could be the ultimate cloned Bounty Hunter. When one clone dies, another takes his place. At the end of every successful mission he backs up his memories for for downloading.
I think Palpatine was doing that in some of the EU work?
Fett is looking great. You guys are really making me wish I had money to throw at Star Wars right now.
@elessar2590 they are Mantic Orcs! These guys came from the Dungeon Saga Green Horde expansion, but I think they use the same molds as their regular range.
They’ve got a good old-school kind of look to them I reckon. Though the mold lines are pretty noticeable.
Your Star Wars are looking good. What are you planning for the base?
@horati0nosebl0wer I’m gonna have to watch that movie.
Nah, the brush is a back seat driver. He thinks he can drive better, but I ignore him.
Is that a Reaper mini? Very Halloween. Ah, just stripping the face.
That Pumpkin looks very happy…
@mage cool, I like variety, Goblin or clone trooper kind ?
I remember years ago GW did a White Dwarf article about different Goblin species and recommended ways to kit bash them.
@oriskany I’m enjoying the batrep!
@querion got my fingers crossed for ya! I want to see how your kitbash Elves come up.
October 24, 2018 at 11:46 am #1291527Progress:
I painted the dip on these four, but it was too tedious. So I left them for the night. Tonight, before the last of the daylight I dipped the rest. They’re out in the garage drying.
? I lost one of the little doggies!! I was shaking the excess dip off, and my pliers went flying out of my hand along with the mini! Goooooone!!
Suffice it to say, I maintained a better grip after that…
October 24, 2018 at 11:47 am #1291528@rayzryr If I remember correctly in the Star Wars RPG that was a feature for wealthy characters. It’s some 20 years since I played that XD And thank you.
October 24, 2018 at 2:31 pm #1291628@rayzryrtime is still hiding from me … sneaky little thing! But at least i managed to get some quick pictures of them:
color scheme will be classic high elven too, at least thats the plan at the moment. So expect a lot of bright blue, white and silver
October 24, 2018 at 3:48 pm #1291647Couldn’t possibly matter less, but yes, did get what I think is an award.
Unless I missed it. Doesn’t matter. I’m just not going crazy, is all.
October 24, 2018 at 4:03 pm #1291648Thanks, @elessar2590 – Force on Force is a great game, definitely one of the exceptions I was talking about earlier during my rant on “post-1900 historical / modern miniatures don’t work.” I just wish I could keep track of the actions and reactions better. Probably a failing on my end, but that’s the only part of the game over which I stumble. The comparisons between regular and irregular forces (all the way to basically different rule sets) is awesome.
Definitely liking the rebel commandos. I remember the sci-fi-ized STG44s I think they were carrying in ROTJ.
Glad you’re liking the WW1 bat rep and project. It means a a lot when people comment or recommend on the project thread, especially given the WW1 material we have coming out very soon for BoW/OTT.
I promised everyone we’d be coming back at least once to the Great War this year, if nothing else for the centennial anniversary of the 11 November Armistice. 🙂
So yes, hence the focus on a lot of very-late-war “closing days” of the Great War in the coming weeks. 😀
Battle Report Continues – “Coleraine at War” in the Closing Days of World War I
Thanks very much, @rayzryr ! Very sorry to hear you had a “dip casualty.” 🙁 The survivors are looking great so far!
