@evilstu really just my approach to the hobby in general. Filmed a few videos already but as most of them are fuelled by me rambling on and whisky, they require a lot of editing!
@sundancer loving the BB stuff, that must have taken awhile!
October 21, 2018 at 1:59 pm #1289885@mage nice potion!
Ahh the classic mimic meme. Wait, did you paint a mimic as well?!?
Fett is looking great, excellent colour choice. Spot on, I’d say. Gobbo’s are good too. Different colours?
@a27cromwell wow, your conversion from photo to model is great! Having never (yet) attempted to build something inspired from a pic, I’d be interested to know if you try and find parts to match the picture, or the other way round?
@evilstu your 2017 batch: that’s an impressive amount to get through. I get what you’re saying about priorities, but at least if/when the needs comes around for something from that lot, it’ll be done! And yeah, 40 degree heat isn’t exactly conducive to painting is it ?
The Fireforge minis look great. I’ve always wanted an RPG town or village with locals to interact with.
Between you and @mage I’m thinking I want to craft some Sorcery Points for my current DnD character. Keeping track on the DnD Beyond website isn’t really working for me since we’re using a home brew scenario. Basically my character has double the amount he should have, the online character sheet can’t handle it…
Vodka jelly shots… sure they’re a healing potion, of course!
Yeah, you got it: gotta keep up…
Jessica Jones S2 was good, maybe better than s1. Luke Cage s2 was good, but I felt that s1 had better character flow for Luke himself. No spoilers!
@oriskany What you said about people reaching out to you regarding historic events: When this came up on local radio recently, I immediately thought of you!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Jaywick
I’m not about to jump into historic gaming over it, but it is one the most interesting things I’ve found out about this area. I’d probably use it as the basis of a scenario for a sci-fi RPG perhaps. A Star Wars Rebellion style situation.
Your counters and maps: what do you use to design them? How long does a game like that take to play out? Looks like a fair while.
@rickabod41 sweet paint on the Chaos. My beat-up old Skaven team will take ya! ?
@sundancer ah, you were late too? Fashionably late, that’s what we are. You don’t show up on time for a party do you!
That custom Blood Bowl pitch is brilliant. More Star Wars! Between you and @mage it’s getting hard to resist…
@elessar2590 yeah Star Wars is looking real good right about now…
ok, late now. Paint tomorrow.
October 21, 2018 at 2:47 pm #1289894Good morning, all ~
First, a few replies:
No worries, @horati0nosebl0wer – these games aren’t for everyone. As 60-70% (measured by titles) of the actual wargaming hobby, though, I try to make sure they get at least some representation. So Blue Max? Isn’t that the Pour le Mérite medal, i.e., actually a World War I game? Just asking because you mention B-17s.
It’s just a different way of wargaming. Personally I feel it’s better because it suffers from none of the inherent problems of miniature wargaming – expense, time invested before play, unrealistic rules, wonky scales, screwed-up ranges, oversimplistic rules, no tactical realism, storage, etc. All that said, you can’t beat a miniature game for its visual impact. Since joining Beasts of War, I’ve learned to appreciate miniature wargaming, and do it quite a bit. But definitely part-time, I still “have one boot” in the world of “scaled” wargaming (hex & counter, computer, etc).
@evilstu – Monash really doesn’t get enough credit (commander, Australian Corps, 4th Army, BEF, so four divisions or so … call it 100,000 men). At his Battle of Hamel ( July 1918) he seems to have taken what he saw of German “stosstruppen” tactics in the Kaiserschlacht spring offensives and adapted it for use with is own forces. He “wrote a new book” on how to assault WW1 positions, pretty much tossing what had been established procedure up until then. He absolutely overwhelmed the German position at Hamel. The results (and more recommendations) were passed up to his boss, (Lt. General Rawlinson, CG Fourth Army), and then to his boss, Field Marshall sir Douglas Haig (CinC, BEF), and then up to his boss (nominally), Generalissimo (later Marshall) Ferdinand Foch (Supreme Allied Commander, Western Front).
Anyway, Monash’s doctrines were adopted widely through the rest of the BEF for the subsequent battles that officially kicked off what history would eventually call the Hundred Days Offensive that wound up winning the war. So Battles of Amiens, Arras, Cambrai (1918), St. Quentin Canal, Courtrai, etc.). Even the parts that Australian Corps were not involved in (honestly only one quarter of Fourth Army, and one of four armies in BEF, so about 1/16 of the Allied Force), Monash’s influence helped toward a positive outcome.
Some people have gone so far as to call Monash the “Father of the Blitzkrieg,” which is frankly nonsense (these people don’t know what “blitzkrieg” actually means) but it can’t be denied that he had a massive impact on combined tank-artillery- infantry coordination in late World War I, one that exceeded even his command of the Australian Corps.
No coincidence at all with the 100th Anniversary of these Hundred Days battles and the eventual Armistice. Stay tuned. 😀
@rayzryr – great link on the Operation Jaywick. I confess I had heard of this command / special force but thought they operated mostly in New Guinea, I never realized they struck all the way into Singapore.
As far as the counters and maps go, it’s Photoshop 14 / CSS 5.5. The actual project goes into a little of the procedure:
Coleraine Goes to War! – BoW / OTT with the 36th Ulster Division World War I – Austalians, too!
The game is actually pretty quick. This definitely is not the case with all hex & counter games. In fact, the game that Valor & Victory is based on, Advanced Squad Leader, is a true 1980s monster that yes, takes hours. Many hours. But Valor & Victory is kind of a “love letter” to ASL, written by a true fan of the game who wanted to bring that kind of gaming back, but with MUCH LESS work and heartache. This game in Valor & Victory I’m expecting to take 2 hours or less, and it’s actually something of a big game. Some V&V scenarios wrap up in 30 minutes. 😀
October 21, 2018 at 3:02 pm #1289901Okay, now to some feedback:
@mage – more awesome work on the objective markers, and that Harley Quinn looks hot! 😀
@sundancer – I love the texture in that sports field. And nice extra touch with the dugout.
@elessar2590 – I look forward to seeing how those Rebel troopers come out. I struggle with Star Wars lately, I really do, but I still have a real love for the original 1970s-80s trilogy, aesthetic, and stories.
@rayzryr – great work so far on your Orktober pledge. Those look very detailed. When they’re fully painted I’m sure they will look amazing.
@evilstu – okay, I absolutely love the brightly-colored Bren / Universal Carriers. 😀 It also looks like you have a British armored car in there. 😀
October 21, 2018 at 4:39 pm #1289955@evilstu sure, this one is the one that got the most paint on it, but she’s still far from finished:
the others just got their green Cloth finished so far. and with her i will redo the armor plates since i’m not satisfied with the effect there.
October 21, 2018 at 5:32 pm #1289959@rayzryr , I never really thought about … I just see something and think I can replicate it to a degree based on the kit limitations ( molded on details , optional parts , bits box finds ) , research ( my book collection , various web sites and photos found on the net ) as well as my hobby skills ( is it a straight swap of parts or a whole rebuild stuff from scratch )
I’ve always been interested by this KV II since I saw a few pictures in a Squadron / Signal book back in the 70s . This one vehicle held up a Panzer Division at a cross roads for a couple of days , ( village name escapes me ) but it was eventually knocked out and all crew killed ( buried with honors by the Germans ) . Today I can find 20 pictures of this vehicle on a Russian KV site so its much easier to model it . Then its just a matter of deciding what part of the kit to cut . remove , or replace . As I have been building tanks for 45 years it gets to be pretty easy to figure that out . The same with kit bashing Warlord’s figures , it just a matter of the pose you want to replicate , the parts you have on hand , and how much tweaking the arms and legs will need to look natural . This KV kit came with 2 turrets so I decided to model the hull with both
Since these pictures , I’ve moved the open fender box to the rear part of the fender as it stops the turret from turning .
October 21, 2018 at 5:45 pm #1289968Been doing a little work on my Orc plane , drilling out the gun barrels and figuring out the rocket / bomb load
I had my grand son visiting and he picked up the plane and the wings , which were just tacked on , came off , so he puts them back on , but wrong way round ….
This looks very cool , so I glued the wings this way . I’m filling in holes for attaching the under wing bombs as they are now on the top of the wing , and will have to pin the rockets and bombs when I mount them . Some times mishaps can inspire you .Still not keen on painting it in bright colors …..
October 21, 2018 at 6:28 pm #1289998Thanks everyone for the nice words on the BB field… it was a summer project and took 9 evenings. I did a little build-blog on my hobbyblog on it. please visit it for more pictures. KLICK ME. Just little picture on how I did the markings:

@rayzryr yeah when the paint is drying out on the wet palette then you know you are in trouble 😛 Missed the Fireforge KS but will be all over those townsfolk packs once they hit retail. I know what you mean re the town – I have been collecting pretty much every ‘civilian’ looking mini I have come across for a few years now. Still need to see if I can pick up some of the civilian sets form Saga and Warlord… Hopefully there will be enough variety in the Fireforge plastic kit that a full town will be possible (Paying $13 for each metal mini means my town’s market day is going to be pretty poorly attended… 😛 ). Quite liked the feel of Jessica Jones s1, was a nice change of pace to have a supervillain that wasn’t all about punching. But quite enjoying season 2. For me though it’s all about Daredevil – I’ve always liked the character and am quite enjoying this rendition of his story. 30 points for all the responses.
@oriskany coincidentally (and apologies to all for tip-toeing into a political space) there was supposed to be a private members bill introduced to federal Parliament today to seek to have Monash posthumously promoted to Field Marshal. Not sure if it was actually tabled today though…
https://www.sbs.com.au/news/new-push-to-promote-aussie-war-hero-monash
I think my favourite story from that offensive was that he had instructed artillery to fire canisters of colored smoke onto enemy positions just prior to the assault, with the intended impact being that the troops would think it was mustard gas and panic and be too busy affixing gas masks to properly address the issue of the approaching allied forces. I’m not sure how effective this actually proved to be but it does demonstrate the creative and all-encompassing approach he took to planning the offensive. Thanks but I do feel a bit awkward about colouring the Universal carriers that brightly (I’m still not used to all the colour in 40k…). However my plan is to grubby them up and weather them down bringing them back towards a more subdued palette if I can manage it (being 3d prints means that washes may just end up highlighting the layers or ‘stepping’ in the prints so will have to rethink my usual approach…). Nice spot 🙂 The armored car at the back is an Otter Light Reconnaissance Car – it seemed appropriate for the theme of the project… 50 points for the detailed history on Monash and responses/feedback.
@querion a great start on the project, like the orange and dark green colour combination. Wow, those sculpts do look very detailed and delicate – should look great once you have a force of them together. Hope you are enjoying working on them 🙂 10 points.
@a27cromwell yes I much prefer the reverse wing design. It does sound like a particularly orky solution 🙂 And interesting reading up on your approach to kitbashing. 20 points.
@sundancer heh I started looking through your BB project post and then backed out to the parent site and panicked and closed the browser when I saw that scrabble ad again 😀 Great work on the pitch though. Nice progress on the imperials, Is Boba Fett going to be done in movie realistic colours or do you have an alternate scheme in mind? 20 points.
@mage linked for alter watching, thanks for the heads up, always do enjoy a good TED talk 🙂 10 points.
October 22, 2018 at 10:30 am #1290204@evilstu and anyone else interested, Boba Fett had different paint schemes in TESB and ROTJ. So make sure you are historically accurate. ?
October 22, 2018 at 10:46 am #1290206@woldenspoons well that’s a headache – guess I’ll just follow the paint scheme from the Star wars Xmas Special then… (and yes everybody, you are allowed to throw rocks at me for bringing that one up…). 10 points for the Star Wars trivia, will have to pay closer attention next time i revisit the Holy trilogy 🙂
Ok have just sorted all my tax paperwork for last year (still have a week and a half to prep and submit it…) and ordered a magnifying/natural daylight lamp. My plan is to have a tray of painting stuff that I can take down to the house amd maybe get a bit of hobby done during the week. Will see how that goes…
