I think the universal Gangfight rules sounds promising. I did back the Kickstarter as it also gives the opportunity to create your own games, could be King Kong or try some zombies.
August 20, 2018 at 1:42 am #1254650Okay, I seem to be waaaay behind here. Lemme try to catch up.
@sundancer – I agree. People ask why I decided not to have children – my answer is because I’m not yet done being a child myself. 😀 And more great progress on those rebel troopers.
@biggabum – not a comics expert – but the way I’ve heard it is that Poison Ivy has had a wicked crush on Harley Quinn for years, but old-school 90s Harley was a little too naive to “get it” (way too focused on her ‘puddin’.) In the more modern era, where everything is super-sexed up, of course Harley Quinn gets it and is all too willing to reciprocate, because fan-boys + two sexy bad girls + steamy “alternate” lifestyle choices = $10,000,000 in revenue. 🙂
Friggin’ awesome narrative battle report, by the way! You should get a job screenwriting for DC. Hey, you couldn’t do any worse than the monkeys with typewriters they have there now, right?
Tables look great @woldenspoons .
Awesome kit-bashing so far, @dawfydd – just asking, does that often present a difficulty at 40K tables? I know sometimes people get very finicky about WYSIWYG rules and what is “legal” vis-a-vis a given codex, etc.
@mage – no worries at all. If I wasn’t “comfortable in my own skin,” I wouldn’t have appeared on camera in about 60 BoW videos over the years. That said, very happy to report I’ve lost about 50-70 pounds as of late – a drastic reduction of carbs in my diet has done wonders.
When I first started appearing in BoW content, I think Warren started walking around the nickname “Mighty O” – clearly they Googled “Oriskany” and came up with the US Navy aircraft carrier that had that nickname. I liked it, but I think some people thought the “O” would start carrying some other connotation – again, not one that I would certainly mind, to be honest. 😀
But no … USS Oriskany is a Valcour-class destroyer from the “Darkstar” game I have going over in the projects. Matthew Spencer is the captain. 😀
I didn’t know this, but there actually is a USS Oriskany in Star Trek – apparently one of Enterprise’s less-famous sister ships (Constitution /Enterprise class, she had dozens).
The USS Oriskany (registry numbers NCC-1020 and NCC-1733) was a 23rd century Federation starship, a Constitution-class cruiser in Starfleet service in the 2280s. In particular, the Oriskany was built to the specifications of a Enterprise-subclass class XI cruiser, commissioned and launched on reference stardate 2/1906 in the 2270s. By the 2280s, this vessel had been outfitted as a heavy cruiser (CA). (TOS video game: Starfleet Command; FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)
Oriskany was recorded as destroyed on reference stardate 2/2510. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer’s Manual)
What kind of hat is the Historical Editor Hat? A blue “Make America Sane Again” hat. Oh wait, is that too close to politics?
As far as finding evidence of older cultures …
When it comes to history, we have to be a little like “imprecise scientists” – we have to remain fact-based but always ready to accept new evidence when it presents itself. We can’t get dogmatic about it.
So if they opened a tomb and found a laptop inside – the conclusion would be that tomb wasn’t really as “undiscovered” as you thought it was. Unless it wasn’t a Mac or Lenovo or HP … and really was an unknown computing device from an impossibly prehistoric culture. Then it’s time to start rewriting history books (as well as a lot of computing software, I would imagine).
I’m just not holding my breath. People who don’t read very much about (or are just casual) about history in general don’t realize how much is actually known. History is not “a lie agreed upon” as dismissive and uneducated people love to quip – such cynicism is really just an apologetic for how much such people don’t know. They don’t know how much is known as immutable fact, and so they don’t know “where the walls are” and thus they don’t know what is patently impossible. Before you know it you have conspiracy theories that really are insulting.
Please understand I’m not saying the question was insulting or anything. 🙂 It’s just that with the amount of construction … and let’s face it … waste that an advanced society would produce – and given the fact that we know how many feathers an archaeopteryx had – and that we know the exact day Ramses II launched his war against the Hittites that sparked the “real” battle of Armageddon – and that we can track where just about any rock that was formed by the magnetic signatures relative to the earth’s magnetic field – we wouldn’t have found something? How about in space, where nothing can hide? A race more advanced than us wouldn’t have had some kind of space objects we would have seen by now, given the amount of trash we have up there?
Yeah, “Jäger” in German is literally “hunter”, but used by their air force since 1915 as a “fighter” as in aircraft fighter. So TIE Jäger is really just a literal translation. “X-Flieger” is “X-Wing.” But I’m told by @bothi that his German group actually eschews these German names, they prefer TIE Fighter and X Wing. I’m with you, though, I’m stickin’ with TIE Jäger! 😀
More responses coming …
August 20, 2018 at 1:58 am #1254651@elessar2590 – interesting information regarding British holdings in North and East Africa. We’re actually getting ready to re-run an updated version of the old Desert War article series, which starts off where these campaigns really started in July 1940 – in British Sudan, British and Italian Somalialand (modern Somalia), and Abyssinia (modern Ethiopia). So I’ve had my nose in this neck of the woods recently, albeit in a different time period. 😀
@mage – epic work on the ogres! I like the blue and gold color scheme – very complimentary (approximately complimentary – I don’t want to call down the wrath of @elromanazo ). 😀
Okay, to post my hobby and answer @evilstu ‘s question at once: The new lead mini-mountain is all 28mm Warlord for an SAS / LRDG force. The birth of what many consider “modern” special forces. All Warlord since I’ll be attending a Warlord event and it’s just considered polite to use the company’s products.
This is seriously going to be my first try with anything 28mm.
Oh yes, and I’m with you – it’s TIE Jäger for me from now on! I think I got your response mixed up with @mage ‘s a little bit above – But I’m told by @bothi )who gave me the German boxed set) that his German group actually eschews these German names, they prefer TIE Fighter and X Wing. I’m with you, though, I’m stickin’ with TIE Jäger!
And more awesome work on those armies! How many armies are you working on at once? 😀
@a27cromwell – I love the Polish / Soviet infantry, no matter what base they come on! You know me, Eastern Front is always my favorite.
August 20, 2018 at 3:47 am #1254670@oriskany Lindybeige just made a cool video on British Military Deception that fits with your era. It’s towards the end of the Video. He talks about the British attempts to deceive the Italians and how they succeeded but failed at the same time very interesting.
@evilstu nice work on the Napoleonic’s I’ve got some of the Warlord Sculpts myself and they’re brilliant to paint. Very good and quick work keep it up 🙂 Just with the Shako Pom Poms they’re coloured Differently depending on the Company. 1st Company – Dark Green. 2nd Company – Sky Blue. 3rd Company – Orange. 4th Company – Violet
@sundancer Wow that’s amazing work on the Legion Stuff nice job.
Mahdists on Camels are Done and the Bashi-Bazouks are very close to finished.
August 20, 2018 at 5:49 am #1254686Good morning possums! It’s nearly 6:50am and I am at the desk with coffee and work…
Oh, and did I thank everybody for their kind words on (in my opinion) my rather mediocre painting skills? It’s very much obliged. (Also I want to thank the inventor of on-the-fly dictionaries… makes typing in any language much easier XD)
August 20, 2018 at 6:51 am #1254694Good morning, Monday again! Roll on the weekend.
An early morning low light picture of my converted Lord Arcanum.
I guess my thoughts about a precursor race include the option that they are still here and making sure we don’t find the evidence. Obsidian skulls aside.
August 20, 2018 at 10:53 am #1254785@limburger don’t stress too much about having a bunch of hobby stuff queued up – when the inspiration to assemble and paint something does strike you’ll be well placed to act on it 🙂
@dawfydd yes I did jump on to the GW website and had a look at their pre-order section. Most notable edition appeared to be an upgrade kit for the Primaris. And the new boxed game of course… Still not sure where that one sits strategically – my best guess is to entice the people who just picked up Kill Team to use it as an entrepot to games of 40k proper given the genestealer cult as the opposing force.
@biggabum yeah some of the people I work with were born after I finished school… 🙁 Anyhow… Glad you are enjoying the Batman Miniatures game – and agree that playthroughs really do help with understanding the rules – or in my case, identifying the gaping holes in what I thought was ny reasonably solid grasp of the rules set I had only just finished reading..
@mage don’t burn yourself out replying to us, much more pressing matters afoot for you apparently 🙂 Thanks for the example AoS list, it’s nice to see that you are given the flexibility to field something innovative, quite a few forces blended together there. On a slightly different tack however this list is a great example of why I avoid tourneys nowadays. A dragon and two phoenixes? THREE overpowered monstres in the one list?… Plus another three casters to back that up?… I’m glad he took those 10 spearmen, otherwise the list could have been at risk of being slightly unbalanced 😛 Ahem, sorry… So if I’m being a little less facecionus for a moment, our usual games are with forces 2-3 times larger than the one listed here (I’m doing pretty quick and dirty conversion just eyeballing what is listed and converting to 8th ed points equivalents, but we play 4000-5000 point games) and we will occasionally take one monster, and even then will flag in advance that we are doing so. I’m too old and cranky to be bothered with rules lawyering and ‘mathhammer’ nowadays, and while I genuinely and sincerely do hope that everyone at the tournament had a great time that is not the sort of game I want to play. I think it has just clicked for me why there were no points listed in the initial AoS list, and why 40k is encouraging the broad ‘power level’ system to determine equivalence.
Sorry, went on a bit of a rant there, but the example was a good one for what can be achieved with regard to a combined force, which speaks well to the thematic options permitted by the system from a narrative perspective. So well played to GW there 🙂
@a27cromwell ah the patented revenge sugar high 🙂 As an uncle with a self-appointed licence to spoil all the little ones I break that technique out regularly. Still, I’m careful not to overstep…
Agree that the road bases look much more thematic – well worth the effort to transition across to them I think.
@woldenspoons good to hear you are able to move forward with a variety of projects 🙂 Great conversion too.
@sundancer really like the vibrancy of the colours used on the SWL mins – how are you finding them to work on?
@tuffyears what? You mean that you are supposed to race in this game and not just drive to kill one another? 😛 Seriously, just wondering if you have you been tempted to pick up and convert some of those small plastic matchbox petrol and fire stations and parking garages for use as scenery?
@fcchuck welcome! Yes hadn’t really had a good look at that KS until it was mentioned on the weekender. Had a look at the project and skimmed the downloadable PDF. Planning on giving it a more detailed read-through shortly, for a comparatively low cost buy-in point I am giving it strong consideration.
@oriskany not a Star Trek fan personally but I am of the understanding that there are a bunch of ships in the universe named after references to anime. One of the Enterprise’s sister ships is apparently called the Yamato, which may or may not be a reference to this:
And for the uninitiated, yes that is the original Yamato retrofitted as an interstellar spaceship, because anime 🙂
Haha! LRDG, great stuff. Always like the look of those kits, mainly due to the possibilities presented by stowage on the trucks and jeeps I guess. Keen to see what you can achieve with a 28mm canvas 🙂 How many armies am I working on at once? … Um… 5 armies presently with another dozen queued up for later on. Plus another couple of dozen ‘skirmish’ sized forces and minor projects and terrain on top of that. It’s OK, you can judge me 🙂
@elessar2590 yes point well made on the pom poms, my plan was to overbrush from yellow to orange once the dark varnish was on and set to bring them back up to a more correct colour. But having read your post and having thought about it a little more, while having the force as a unified company will work well for Sharp Practice (which is only skirmish level) it won’t look particularly realistic later on if I am scaling it up to a point where the models are more representative of larger formations (ie for Black powder or a similar system). So after some consideration I think I will perhaps mix the colours up a little and try to cover things off in groups of 8 – that way I can have a unit base for each company in Sharp Practice and still be able to mix tings back into a more correctly appearing formation for more full-scale games. Thanks for the input and the compliment 🙂 yes really liking the Warlord minis, they were so quick to assemble as well. Detractors might complain about the lack of poseability but given the need to rank them up in close formations I think this saves a lot more headaches to be honest. Great texturing and shading on the camels 🙂
Progress to day was getting a coat of varnish on the French (once the varnish has pulled back and fully set they will get a matt coat and a touch-up 🙂 ) and a start made on some Skaven, plus tidying up the undercoat on some terrain. Additionally gave up mucking about with rolling pins to texture foam core for roads and decided to try and 3d print a section as a test piece. Will probably take a good chunk of time to print enough roads to intersect my gaming surface but I figure I should only have to do it the once and then I’ll be able to use them whenever I like moving forward. So will see how it goes…
On top of that my copy of Kill team arrived today (Such a heavy box packed full of goodies!) so will be reading up on the rules tonight and probably adding a few more skirmish forces to my ‘to do’ list…
August 20, 2018 at 10:57 am #1254789Morning all! Date night was a rousing success with good Indian food had by all.
Anyhoo, I am back. I will respond to you all in an ad-hoc albeit consistent fashion throughout the day. Im having friends call over between 12:00 and 13:00. ‘N’ will be painting up the last of her Gotham City Sirens Crew (Harley) while ‘M’ will be tackling his first miniature game army (armies?) and starter set: Star Wars Legion. Under my guidance they will look half ok 😉
Im going to go over some replies now, set up some hobby area, take mini photos, and then set up painting areas and paint. Then I will come back to the thread to post my own material and back to hobby. Then I will start hosting duties again. I have it all kinda roughly planned out in my head 🙂
Now, to find out if my order went through with Warploque, too…

Family is so important. Immerse yourself in it, enjoy! Have a good time? It makes me sad to think of some of the people out there who have nobody…
Moving onto a more positive note, hobby!
You got swarmed by the auld younglings I see. Its unfortunate to be a victim of your own vice and predictability where you can be so easily tracked through the urban wilds. Whats the restaurant you always go to on Sunday? Ice cream toppings eh? I sense a future weekender thread question!
Unfortunate victims of retconning the bases but needs to be done to make it look right. I want to go back on some of the Ogres I already painted and varnished and make their clubs frost weapons too… Im not sure about it. It feels like it might or might not be too much work. Hmmm…..
20 points, I enjoyed reading your post and hearing about your weekend 🙂
Can’t wait to see pics! 🙂
@sundancer <30 points>
Some smooth and crisp painting. They getting based? Hmmm. 30 points (I did award points throughout the various WIP shots and progress, right?).
@tuffyears <10 points>
10 points! Nice game pic. Best of luck.

Damn, I had fun going back through those posts and replying. Im feeling good; friends are visiting, gonna make a coffee soon, get some hobby done, keep active online and immerse myself in my down time. Or maybe its dehydration from going to the bathroom so much since last night after the Chicken Chili Masala I ate…
August 20, 2018 at 11:13 am #1254812August 20, 2018 at 11:21 am #1254827@evilstu they are really easy to paint. Especially if you leave one arm of. Nice molding and the colour nearly does all the work.
@mage “based” as in “all my SW:L bases are plain black. Simply because I can’t decide on that to make and playing on various tables sometimes looks weird. (Like the lava matt I played on… would have looked weird if the Snowtroopers had a snow base as most people do) Black fit everywhere. And multiple identical units get coloured rims (like in the old, old Blood Bowl days). Plus it speeds up completing a set a big lot! 😉
August 20, 2018 at 2:32 pm #1254939Oriskany , might not be cricket to take to a BA Boot Camp , but Rubicon have a plastic LRDG Chevy truck about to be released as well as a plastic SAS Jeep out now . While the resin kits look pretty good , personally I like to add all my own stowage . Nothing grinds my gears more than every damm vehicle of the same type on the table , has the same stowage layout . Why they don’t give you those bits as separate pieces is beyond me , maybe its the outlook of a model builder as opposed to a gamer ? Any way thought I would give you a heads up
August 20, 2018 at 7:37 pm #1255076August 20, 2018 at 8:19 pm #1255078@sundancer <10 points>
Valid points on the bases. 10 more points for the rebels. Enjoy Gamescom and take plenty of pictures. Full disclosure, I do not know what gamescom is so please fill me in, but it sounds fun.
@a27cromwell <15 points>
Interesting. Thanks for posting the info about the product and showing it off to everyone, 15 points
August 20, 2018 at 8:23 pm #1255079So, ‘N’ varnished her poison Ivy mini, worked on her Harley Quinn and began basecoat batch painting on her Moria Goblin horde.
‘M’ brought his Star Wars Legion. We primed everything. The Stormtroopers need one more pass with primer however. I drybrushed the infantry and Luke for the Rebels with Dryad bark whie ‘M’ drybrushed gun metal onto his Scout Walker and did Bugmans Glow on some of the faces. I touched up vader as the Black Primer didnt turn out fantastic. My friend is very eager to do another star wars painting session, and I really want the starter set too! Hes already planning on getting another starter set. He wants rebel squads in different schemes: woodlands, urban and snow warfare. Its great he is thinking ahead and planning a project.
Meanwhile, I am putting the finishing touches on an Easterling themed Mordor Troll for Lord of the Rings and nearly have my Ogor Butcher finished, bringing the Gutbuster army up to 1,000 points fully painted. Then my Temple of Skulls Project will be 80% complete with four armies down and awaiting work on the terrain. Pics to follow as well as points being dolled out.
