Mucking about with Kill Team lists for Space Marines. I have a box of scouts, a tactical squad box and 3 push fit spares. So figuring if I do 2 kill teams and give each 2 scouts with sniper rifles and camo cloaks, 3 tactical marines, a marine gunner with heavy weapon and a sergeant with close combat kit I’ll land somewhere approximately in the mid 90’s points wise for each group. So the question now becomes one of whether or not I try to greenstuff salamander skin on the shoulder pads and tabards for the Salamander team. I might run a couple more test pieces before I commit. I suppose I could just add it to the sergeant and leave it at that if it’s too fiddly.
Second squad will be Blood Angels. Was considering doing Space Wolves but the sniper rifles didn’t really seem as appropriate. Might look to pick up another box and do some conversions later on. The other force I had been considering was Black Templars, none of the other ones I wanted to have a go at were involved in the 3rd war for Armageddon (and clearly we are all about historical accuracy in a fictional space future game setting 🙂 ).
September 19, 2018 at 1:03 am #1270482You could always use saurus shield pieces or dark elf corsair seadragon cloaks.
Id say wolves using sniper rifles are appropriate, imho. Not any more or less so than Blood Angels.
Third War for Armageddon had: Black Templars, Space Wolves, Blood Angels and Salamanders, to name a few, fyi. There were loads of chapters there.

White Scars: 3 BrotherhoodsSeptember 19, 2018 at 2:29 am #1270484@mage yes a lot of options there. Black Dragons would take a bit of converting but would be do-able. White Scars could also be fun – I don’t really mind painting in white as much as everyone else seems to… Marines Malevolent or Flesh Tearers might be nice form a thematic perspective. Couldn’t see myself doing Celestial Lions, things just didn’t work out too well for them… Although using the Primaris form the Dark Imperium box to represent a reinforcing/rebuilding of the chapter could prove interesting…
For those who may be wondering why I am so excited about the prospect of revisiting a nearly 20 year old campaign there was a 2 part series in White Dwarf from 2000 showing a narrative battle report, and I am yet to see a BatRep for a game that looks like it would have been as much fun as this one.
The main tank factory table was comprised of 3 gaming boards, each 6×4 foot, so the resulting table was 6×12 foot of beautifully thematic tabletop with imperial guard, blood angels and salamanders holding off against an invading Ork horde. There were then another three tables – a space hulk in orbit which was launching strikes down against the main table (ie off-board artillery dripping shells onto the main table) where a marine boarding party (templars) was despatched to take out the guns, a hill table where an imperial battery was also launching artillery onto the main table had to hold out against recycling waves of greenskins attempting to knock out their basilisk cannons, and the final table was an 8×6 foot affair with fast attack support forces (White Scars vs Speed Freaks) clashed, with the victor being able to roll their remaining forces onto the main table as a support force.
All four games were played concurrently with players from each team controlling each force (so 1 player for each of the support tables, can’t remember if the main table had 2 or 3 per side?). Write Up was done in a narrative style from the perceptive of the various combattants. Full credit to GW on this one, they really went above and beyond here. I’ve wanted to attempt something similar ever since 🙂
September 19, 2018 at 2:31 am #1270485Sharp Practice forces done to tabletop. Still need some touching up but going to park them for the moment.
September 19, 2018 at 6:22 am #1270578@evilstu i had totally forgotten that battle report but now you made me remeber it and i have to thank you for that. It really was one of the best i’ve ever read so far. Time to search for that WD in my collection and read it again.
September 19, 2018 at 7:00 am #1270580@limburger @querion I still have it. My old breadbin. It has been with me for 30 years now XD Sadly sometime in the past a memory chip blew and I still need to replace it. One of my favourite games was Cavemen UGH lympics XD
Back on topic: still waiting for parts. Parcel is scheduled for today… 🙂
Also: Good morning everyone. And now music!
September 19, 2018 at 7:24 am #1270582@sundancer hah that was an awesome game! and damn i never managed to get over the t-rex during the pole jump 😉
September 19, 2018 at 8:09 am #1270598Better late than never…
1) RPGs, definitely a fan of the fantasy genre through many campaigns of D&D. I’m definitely a fan of the old roll&keep 7th Sea and Legend of the 5 Rings. I miss 2nd ed. Vampire the Masquerade as it really had great things going with their clans and it made me look at their other games before it all got nerfed. I’d like to get into Changeling: The Lost as it has sooooooo much potential for good gaming.
2) A good computer game to recommend… how about two series. First, is the Deus Ex franchise that really broke the mold in FPS style gaming that built a huge cyberpunk world and rewarded players more for cloak and dagger action. The second is the Alone in the Dark series. I can only speak to the quality of the first one in a 3rd person Lovecraftian puzzle heavy game. It definitely got my head in the right place as a young kid for the later introduction to Silent Hill.
3) Kitbash/convert-yep.. same thing. Speaking of cutting figures in half….. I’ve had this project on my shelf for a while but I took a pair of Reaper figures and began modding for a 1930s sideshow display. From the waist up Yvette, Magician’s Assistant by Bob Ridolfi (50125) and from the waist down Gretchen, Oktoberfest Fraulein by Werner Klocke (50118). I just recently saw a video on a potential way of sculpting curtains without too much fuss. The last time I tried I was quite upset at my sculpting skills.
4) Narrative play was interesting in Legend of the 5 Rings as it tied into the CCG tournaments. It turned out more like a living RPG storyline from tournament results. I did play a little into the 7th Sea narrative as the GM was a member of NOM (Novus Ordo Mundi) that was a group of GM s that submitted their campaign results to AEG.
5) Not a bootcamp attendee… flights/lodging are pricey and time from work would mean I lose the roof over my cat and me.
Now on for music…
Opium Jukebox covering Iron Man … from the tribute album to Black Sabbath in bhangra form
Easy Star All-Stars covering Money … Pink Floyd redone as reggae dubs
Heilung – Krigsgaldr … music to play at high volume while playing SAGA
Death in Vegas – Aisha … something you’d expect from a noir film the likes of Sin City
Deltron 3030 – Mastermind … a great piece of sci fi related hiphop; listen to the whole album for the full storyline
Zardonic – Pure Power … Definitely heavy… headphone wearers beware
David Hasselhoff – True Survivor (from Kung Fury) … All Hail the Hoff!!! ( and the 30 mins of Kung Fury may or may not be a part of your life lost depending on how you like cheese films)
September 19, 2018 at 8:25 am #1270612I’ve mothballed these until I clear out more of my mini painting which I expect to be next summer if I’m dilligent and restrain myself from buying m/any more.
September 19, 2018 at 9:57 am #1270669@querion yeah that was an epic battle report. First massive scale game I had ever had exposure to – this was years before Apocalypse got rolled out. It was in WD 248 and 249 in Australia, although I gather the numbering is slightly different here (numbers in the rest of the world are higher due to publication in Oz commencing later?).
@sundancer I remember the Ugh Lympics game 🙂 – a friend of mine had it. We never managed to get very far though…
@horati0nosebl0wer those are some great looking conversions. Do like Kung Fury – it’s like a half hour summary of everything I ever watched the 1980’s 🙂
Managed to get my Salamander sergeant assembled and converted up. I took photos but they turned out blurry.. Will try and assemble the rest of the squad tomorrow and prime once I have drilled out their gun barrels (I seem to have misplaced my pin vice which could just be natures way of telling me to clean my workbench…). Also cracked and started working on a couple of artillery pieces for Sharp Practice, and a squad of British Dragoons… Will additionally try and concurrently knock out a block of 36 heavy foot knights for 8th ed WHFB, but that will be more of a side project as it will just be a speedpaint.
September 19, 2018 at 10:11 am #1270682And have a parcel collection slip – judging by the tracking ID number I’m guessing it is my Spellcrow conversion bits, so might be able to get a start made on assembling some Orks in anticipation for next month. @mage should we kick off a formal thread early or wait until the calendar ticks over?
September 19, 2018 at 10:20 am #1270687@evilstu Not sure if you have access to 40k Conquest or not but this week’s issue contains Reavers which are quite good in Kill Team I hear. You make a saving, get a mag, and a pot of leadbelcher. Win win.
For Orktober I really don’t want to buy any Orks. Unless it is the dicemasters team pack. I will compromise by adding some green to my Walking Dead roamers.
September 19, 2018 at 11:23 am #1270741@woldenspoons no joy on the Conquest magazines down here unfortunately. there is a 3 marine push fit reavers kit available which would do in a pinch though. because I am doing 3rd war for Armageddon which predates Primaris marines so they don’t suit thematically.
Re Orktober you could do a dedicated ‘Ork/orc hunter’ squad in whatever army/genre you happen to be working on at the time? Although realistcucally I’m not sure Death Guard would be that selective in who they were obliterating…
September 19, 2018 at 12:39 pm #1270780Storm is hitting here and the wind is picking up. An orange warning in most of the RoI while a yellow one in place for the rest. Not sure about NI. I think it is due to hit GB also, A roof got blown off a house in a town twenty minutes away, fallen trees across roads here and there too apparently. Im staying in with this viral thing I have.
@evilstu (100 points)
There are a lot of interesting and fun chapters, as well as guard regiments there to choose from. Fair play to you from not balking at painting white armour. I always wanted to do a Scars army since I saw that film Mongul years and years ago but couldn’t do it. Maybe a successor Chapter. Second foundings are always pretty close in behaviour to their parent chapters anyway.
There are 100 Celestial Lions or so left. And Guilliman or one of his envoys encountering the Chapter or hearing what happened would reinforce them up to full strength with new gear to boot. It would be an interesting theme. All line infantry Primaris and some characters while the 100 normal marines left would more or less take over the command structure of the Chapter with their experience. Big RG would probably bring the Inquisition into line for what they did to the Chapter too.
100 points for all the work on the historicals.
I have one of the issues out and will read it shortly. Gotta find the other. Fun times ahead!
Welcome to the thread and indeed better late than never! What are those two female magician miniatures? They remind me of Zatanna from DC comics.
I shall do a separate post for you since you gave such a detailed introudction 😉
@evilstu Well, Armageddon was still going on when the great rift appeared and to the best of my knowledge it is still happening, so you could…
I picked up issue 2 and issue 3 of conquest after the doctors this morning!
Death Guard may have special concoctions for orks know?
I think an early thread might work since people will see it in advance. What are your thoughts dude?
Sounds like you are kicking off into some hard work with the british dragoons.
@woldenspoons Well, you don’t have to buy Orks. Something suitably Orky themed may do. I might start an Orktober thread and a third war for Armageddon Thread (soon ish for this) for anyone interested in doing a collaobrative thing. Not all Orks/orcs are in 40k or even GW after all.
no joy on the Conquest magazines down here unfortunately. there is a 3 marine push fit reavers kit available which would do in a pinch though. because I am doing 3rd war for Armageddon which predates Primaris marines so they don’t suit thematically.
