Pledges … got three things I’m hoping to get done this weekend . Actually I have 3 days as work has changed from 5 – 8s to 4 – 10s . So who knows, if I stay away from the book shelf and the TV screen , I might get stuff done .
On the left , is a resin figure from Brother Vinni of the Rogue One charactor Pao , some kind of lizard dude , who will fit in well with my Star Wars Legion Rebels . To the rear is the extra ( 4th ) turret I managed to build from my Tiger II Zug box . I’m going to build it as a knocked out vehicle ,hence the dislodge spare track . Still figuring out how big and deep to make the shell strikes on the turret side . Front stage , I have a basic 3 part Space Marine figure . A few of us who hang out at the local hobby shop are holding a sort of contest . We each get one of these dudes and we build , cut , change , and convert to our hearts content . The project is to be completed by the end of the month . It should be interesting as we have car , plane , tank and ship modellers as well as a couple of 40K guys involved in this . I’m expecting some really neat , some really weird and a couple of really bad looking figures to show up at the end of this . I’m thinking of adding Bolt Action heads and weapons to my guy , he’ll sort of look like the Konflikt 47 line of figures Warlord has out , I hope
September 15, 2018 at 2:22 am #1267256Tunes for it – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d8SzG4FPyM
1) Have you ever played a tabletop role-playing game? If so why not, if you do, what do you prefer? How might I change your mind if you arent a fan?
Hmmm….. Not really…… RPGs are fine but I prefer games with miniatures – skirmish games with a strong narrative element. and definitely NO card/deck building games!!
2) Recommend me a computer game of some sort. No wrong answer.
Easy – Inquisitor Martyr. Bloody fantastic game. Lovely interpretation/represtation of the 40K verse. Called Diablo III in space by some. Dont know if thats true as I’ve never played D3!! Inq:Mar is a real belter. Lovely graphics and visuals, addictive gameplay and plenty of heretics to put to the sword adn bolt 😉
3) Is Kitbashing and Converting the same thing or different? Keep this one civil lads!
Not exaclty – they are more like brother and sister. Kitbashing is where the focus is on combining elements from differnt kits to make a wholly new and original construct. Not a lot of custom made parts involved. Converting is taking a kit or kits and changing adn adding parts in the construction. Adding parts or bits made of other materials or that arent even kit parts in teh first place – plasticard, gears from watches etc. Tons of grey area b/t the two though.
4) Do you do much in the way of narrative play, campaigns or the like? Is there any era, worldwide events or the like that you paritcularly enjoyed/still do or wish to explore?
Not really – I paint way more than I play. WAY more. I would defintely get into a narrative campaign for games likes KillTeam or Necromunda if I cam eacross though.
5) Any of you guys go to any of the BoW events or bootcamps, and what would you like to see from one of those events.
Havent before as I was on the other side of the world but always wanted to. and finally, in 2 weeks time I will be making the pilgrimage north to Coleraine for my first ever bootcamp. 🙂
Hobby pledges… …… Hmm….. recently got my first ever heathenbrush….cough…….. I mean……… airbrush so I need to get a little more practive in with that. Crikey – what a shite pledge!! Ok – this week I am going to get 3 minis totally finished up and based and ready for photos and also get my nmm steel practive up to scratch. And get the damn interent sorted so I can start streaming again…………hopefully 😉
One more tune………..
Happy weekend one and all 🙂
September 15, 2018 at 9:30 am #1267572Yay … I’m back again 🙂
Let’s see if I can get something done, right ?
Planning on coding for my Killteam utility. There’s not much to show yet, because it’s engine stuff (I can save stuff in a database … yay). Still thinking of a name and platform (webbased is cool, but impractical).Once that’s done (like never ;)) I will have something to try and maintain my Killteam stats. At least that’s the idea.
Next week there’s Elfia (a fantasy/cosplay themed event, I may go as Elwood Blues ) and then there’s the bootcamp after that.
1) Have you ever played a tabletop role-playing game? If so why not, if you do, what do you prefer? How might I change your mind if you arent a fan?
Yep, it is what kind of got me into this hobby.
Athough to be fair when I started I just collected lots of RPG books as they are fun to read.
I did play in a AD&D 2nd edition campaign with co-workers. It was kind of fun.
I’ve also played demo games at the few conventions I’ve been to over the years. Last one was a Pathfinder society, which was fun but I don’t see the appeal of doing it in a ‘competitive’ format.2) Recommend me a computer game of some sort. No wrong answer.
Soo many choices. I’d be here all year if I had to list them all.The new Spiderman game for PS4 is excellent. Spidey webslinging through new york, fighting bad guys and being sneaky feels really good.
I trust you’ve seen the Nintendo news this week ?
Civilization is coming to the Switch. I haven’t seen any real info, but it looks like it might be the same game as on pc.
The console versions were cool, but extremely simple by comparison.Horizon:Zero Dawn is getting a boardgame, but it was a very cool open world game with an interesting story (and robot dinosaurs … everyone likes them, right ?) .
Speaking of RPG’s … there’s the Witcher series. Ideally you’d start at the first one (should be cheap on Steam or GoG.com), because it allows you to get to know the world and set up a few consequences later in the series.
Be prepared for an adult themed game though. Best thing about the series is that the choices aren’t black&white and everyone really hates you for being a mutant bastard. Choices do matter.3) Is Kitbashing and Converting the same thing or different? Keep this one civil lads!
I think everyone has said more or less the same things so far and I have to agree.
Conversion is more like adding a few bits and pieces to a primary kit.
Kitbashing is taking stuff from several kits + scratchbuilding and creating something completely new and possibly unrelated to any of the kits used for parts.4) Do you do much in the way of narrative play, campaigns or the like? Is there any era, worldwide events or the like that you paritcularly enjoyed/still do or wish to explore?
I don’t have half the time I’d need to play anything, but I’d definitely enjoy a more narrative focus.
It’s why I like the new Xcom computer games.5) Any of you guys go to any of the BoW events or bootcamps, and what would you like to see from one of those events.
I’ve been to the FoW 4.0 bootcamp and the Bolt-Action is next.
It makes me wish there were similar events closer to home.
I do wonder if a RPG focused bootcamp could be possible.Tunes ?
You might recognise this one from the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer :
And to finish :
September 15, 2018 at 12:58 pm #1267733@limburger Deus Ex Mankind Divided has one of the best sound tracks ever. Great stuff.
Questions time!
1). I’ve played more RPGs than I can mention, space, fantasy, werewolves, super heroes, mega city judges and so on. I don’t believe I’ve ever played one with figures.
2). I love open world style games. I can’t recommend The Witcher 3 enough. The word Epic uses The Witcher to describe awesome amazing things.
3). I see kit bashing as mashing parts together, converting is custom creating parts etc. Small line though.
4). I tend to only play narrative in the Walking Dead. I’m not against it though and I blame this thread.
5). I care full time and I’m poor so I can’t afford to go to a Boot Camp but I’d utterly love to. I’d even shave off my beard so I can make @warzan think he’s looking in a mirror haha.
My hobby pledge is to assemble my Gellerpox Infected. Which I’ve done ?
Assemble the scenery from Rogue Trader.
Make it through the day without running to the shop to buy Kill Team rule book.
Tune time!
September 15, 2018 at 1:47 pm #1267772Okay, I am hobbying away, trying to feel better. Woke up feeling run down. Just page 2 for now.
@a27cromwell (10 points)
Avoid all other non-minis media.
That sounds like a cool hangout and nice little hobby event, kinda serendipitous, in a way considering the question in the thread. Id like to see something K47ey.
10 points
@irishsteve (75 points)
I love that Dead South song. 20 points.
1) What about an RPG WITH miniatures? Lets not sully this thread with the mention of deck builders and cards shall we? Let cards only be a reference for unit profiles for proper games with minis.
10 points.
2) 15 points, sounds brilliant.
3) 10 points, valid points.
4) 5 points. Try Mordheim, you will not be disappointed.
5) Yeah, being closer to the pacific will do that. Enjoy the bootcamp! 5 points.
Heathenbrush, that’s funny haha, 10 points
Cant wait to see them and get in some practice with that airbrush.
@limburger (45 points)
Welcome back. Coding? Dude, you have a bazillion models to paint, forget the coding!!! 😀
Please go to Elfia and take pictures. Which bootcamp are you going to?
1) Tell us about your first sessions. 10 points.
2) Have you played it? I watched videos online, seems good.
The board game thing? Yeah looks like it could be great. I want a switch, but that was before that news.
Is HZD the post apocalpytic game with robot dinos and stuff? Who is doing it? I think I saw this online. Is it Steamforged?
Mutant you say? That’s that Geralt guy?
15 points.
3) 5 points.
4) 5 points.
5) There would not be much to bootcamp with at a bootcamp though would there? It would be more like an RPG playing weekend, forgive me if that sounds ‘not right’. 10 points.
Ill listen to tunes soon. I really need to shower, head to the toy shop and bakery too. And take pics of my hobby.
@woldenspoons (45 points)
1) Judge Dredd was a fun one. 10 points.
2) I have one of them, played an hour of it, stopped, moved house and never got back to it. 5 points.
3) 10 points.
4) 5 points.
5) 5 points.
10 points for the pledge. Pics! Resist the urge to spend dude.
September 15, 2018 at 3:51 pm #1267893// Please go to Elfia and take pictures. Which bootcamp are you going to?
There’s only one at the moment : the desert war bolt-action bootcamp 😀
// 1) Tell us about your first sessions. 10 points.
My AD&D character was a half-elven crypt ranger (from a Dragon magazine) with a charisma stat of 3 …
I always thought of him having half his faced disfigured with an acid burn or something equally ugly.
And his personality was *eh* not friendly despite being ‘good’.As a crypt ranger I could ‘sense undead’ (which I imagined was the result of his wound starting to burn … )
Name : Arnold Rimmerlister …
Think of him as a mix between Arnold Rimmer (Red Dwarf) and Dirty Harry.
He’s got a real hatred against anything undead … and would do anything to stop such a threat.
He also blamed his parents for the experiment that caused his disfigurement. Actual details were never revealed. As such I’d probably barely qualify as ‘good’ (the means justify the ends … ).
Neutral because I think it fits a ‘robin hood’ type character who wants to obey the law up until a certain point as it allows for balance to exist.Status : alive after betraying the party and delivering them to his patron to be used in an experiment involving a magical gate.
(my excuse to run a few adventures as a DM and send them to the old Warhammer world … ). The party survived and found a way back to their own world.// 2) Have you played it? I watched videos online, seems good.
yep, I’m playing it. The combat isn’t quite as clean and easy as Arkham series, but it definitely makes you feel like spiderman.
The fun part is that if a bad guy is down and you hit him with the web again he gets webbed to the floor (or wall).
Stealth isn’t like Batman, but then spiderman isn’t exactly know for being stealthy so it kind of fits.
The (inevitable) base clearing missions do kind of suck, because stealth only works for the first wave of bad guys. And then there are 5 more (Each with more weapons and more difficult) with zero checkpoints in between. I’ve done only two so far (one was part of the story as a ‘tutorial’) and the fact that a death resets you to the first wave is very annoying.
As you progress you unlock various spider costumes which each have their own special ability. The neat thing is that once unlocked that special ability isn’t tied to the suit, so you’re not stuck wearing something ugly just for the powers. The only bad thing is that most of these powers suck while a few are total overkill. Best example is my current one : ‘web blossom’.
It sprays webbing all over the place once activated and during the open world crime missions it allows you to stop them in seconds …
// The board game thing? Yeah looks like it could be great. I want a switch, but that was before that news.
No the computer game Civilization (Sid Meier’s Civilization to be precise) although I do realise that there was a Civ boardgame and the computer game has been turned into a boardgame as well. Confusing ? yep. They showed so few of the actual game that at the moment it is a mere guess as to what they’re doing exactly. The hex grid looked a lot like the current pc version though.
> Is HZD the post apocalpytic game with robot dinos and stuff? Who is doing it? I think I saw this online. Is it Steamforged?
Yes it is, Steamforged are kickstarting the boardgame variant. The models looks seriously cool. I was thinking of backing it, but then I saw the expected end date and that would not work for me as I’m planning to move ‘soon-ish’ (I want to move closer to my work so I can ride my bike)
// Mutant you say? That’s that Geralt guy?
Yep. To become a ‘witcher’ one has to go through training and drink something that mutates your body.
This is why all witchers have that white hair and are infertile …
And unlike D&D magic where potions never have side effects (unless they’re cursed) in this setting they always do.In fact they are so toxic that you can only use a limited amount …
September 15, 2018 at 4:30 pm #1267951Just a quick update on my pledge, all the cardboardstuff now resemles at least a little bit one of the huge japanese drums:
next step will be basecoating everything and after that looking for places that i need to fix or change up a little bit
September 15, 2018 at 4:41 pm #1267977I failed my pledge..
September 15, 2018 at 4:46 pm #1267978@woldenspoons so you’re a proud owner of the Kill Team rulebook now?
September 15, 2018 at 5:05 pm #1267984@querion and the dice plus data cards. And scenery. And forced my flgs to start a tournament campaign thing. Epic fail with willpower haha.
September 15, 2018 at 6:02 pm #1268072@querion : that Orky drum looks nice and big. Can you show a figure next to it so we can get a sense of scale ?
lol @woldenspoons
I managed to resist the lure of buying Killteam boxes today.
They did look nice, heavy and big though, so it does look like you’re getting your money worth even when compared to a standard squad box for the same unit (at least the ork team).
Anyone else notice that that some of the squad boxes for 40k had ‘Killteam’ stickers on them ?
The FLGS I was at had them on the Spacemarine tactical squad, Harlequin and Tau boxes. And I think the Ork burna/lootaz box had it as well. Although to be honest if I was doing an Ork kill team I’d probably buythe Orky killteam itself.Which reminds me that I *eh* may ‘need’ to buy stuff for the Orktober challenge …
I did fail my save against buying when I saw the Pathfinder beginners’ box in another shop though.
Before I forget … I’ve got a kickstarter to pick up on monday (if I had not been working I could have had it on yesterday … but that’s life).
//
Russia is having a big ol’ wargame exercise called ‘Vostok 18’.
Cool stuff right ? It’s a shame the real world implications aren’t as quite as cool.
Here’s a classic trailer that’s a bit more fun to watch :
September 15, 2018 at 6:28 pm #1268122Page 2 (continued, and don’t worry, I will get back to page 2, things are quieter for me now):
@limburger <60 points>
Ah, havent been in the loop, so it’s THE boot camp. Enjoy!
1) Charisma 3, eh? ‘Hello sir elf, how are you’ ‘Mind your own damn business you son of a pheasant!!!’. I really like the write-up. 20 points.
2) I suppose balancing combat and making it feel spiderman was never going to be an easy task? Sounds like some interesting play mechanics with grinding and balance issues. 15 points.
3) 5 points for the extra details.
4) 10 points. I better take a better look at the models so. Current video games don’t interest me too much, I still have a bucket load, no exaggeration, of PS2 J-RPGs to play. That doesen’t mean I do not like some of the concepts and having them adapted to a board game.
5) 10 points. Sounds like the Grey Wardens from Dragon Age are a rip off of this. Witcher is based on a Polish Fantasy Novel that goes back a while, right?
Hm. I wanna give potions side effects in my D&D games.
@querion <20 points>
Is that based on an oreitnal drum but Ork inspired? Love the concept.
@woldenspoons What do you mean? You have til Thursday dude, don’t worry about it 🙂
With the stickers Id say that’s for people unfamiliar with 40k or GW products who only wanna do kill team to know the products are compatible, a good idea for an entry point and variety if you ask me.
Who is getting excited for Orktober? Or is it just me?
Failed a willpower saving throw yeah?
Man you have a lot of stuff going on.
September 15, 2018 at 6:29 pm #1268123September 15, 2018 at 7:09 pm #1268137@limburger sure can do:
An infinity mini and a primaris marine for size comparison.
@mage yeah thats the idea behind it. The ironjaw warchanter will look like a drummer with this. So yoe could say he will be a wardrummer
